Chapter 6 - I like you...

Jennifer of 1940s Entry #5

It's been a month since Cynthia died... everyone grieved, of course. As I was about to confront Jennifer, she seemed to vanish with no traces left. No one even seemed to notice her disappearance, as if she didn't exist at all.

I found her... She's back at school all gloomy as if she mourned for the death of her closest friend... though she seemed to be ignored by the people... As if she's invisible... Is it intentional?

When our class is about to end... I hurriedly looked for her but she once again disappeared. But when I was about to leave our school, I saw her. Sobbing, her face hidden in her palms.

I was hesitant at first, but in the end, I ended up approaching her... in a way that is opposite from what I have planned. When I approached her, she tried to act as if she's not crying, but in the end, her tears failed to conceal themselves.

Without thinking, I tried to comfort her. I'm an idiot, right? Am I a disgrace to my family now?

Then she mumbled words like "I'm sorry", "I didn't mean to do that", "It was for the best"

When she calmed down, she started telling me some things, not minding that I'm an enemy and I might take advantage of the vulnerability that she's showing.

She told me that it was Cynthia's choice. She just granted her wish... and she voluntarily killed herself to offer her soul to her. I just listened... I don't even know if I should believe those things... A part of me wants to believe in her, but another part of me is thinking that she's just tricking me. She could be tricking me... Yes, this is just a trick. There's a possibility that it could just be her special ability or something... I heard that Elexians possess those kind of things...

The moment I opened my eyes, my heart almost jumped out of my chest. As I quickly sat and move backwards I felt a light sting on my neck. As I held my neck, Jennifer laughed as she threw the box cutter.

"Opps... sorry... I'm just trying to wake you up. You're late for school!" she said, still laughing.

Angrily, I shot up and pinned her down, but she just grinned at my angry glares. At that moment, all I can think about is that she's about to betray me and I'm such a fool to believe her.

"What was that for!?" I shouted, not knowing that my grip on her hands are tightening. She started to frown. She winced as she struggled to get out of my grip.

"I-I t-told you... I'm t-trying to wake you up!" she replied. My grip continued to tighten which made her whimper, "I-I'm sorry! O-okay? It's a bad jo-joke!"

I harshly loosen my grip and stood up, leaving her lying. I instantly felt ashamed as I saw a tear in her eye.

That was the first time I had an opportunity to look at her... her vulnerable side... Then I remembered... she's the one who was betrayed...

Tattered dress... scars and lash marks on her body... a fragile looking figure...

"W-what?" Jennifer asked as she saw me looking at her.

I knelt and bowed my head.

"Sorry." I whispered. She chuckled.

"No... It's my fault anyway."

"I'm sorry for what my family has done to you... and to your family..." I replied, still kneeling.

When I looked at her, she seemed dumbfounded by what I said. Her eyebrows furrowed, her mouth slightly opened as if she's attempting to say something.

"I... I can understand some of your feelings..." I confessed.

She wanting to be a human... Wanting a normal life... Blabbering about human stuffs...

"I-I'm like you... yearning for a normal life... Not minding this family businesses..." I continued.

"W-why are you apologizing? Why are you telling me this?" She finally replied.

"Because no one else will... After all... I'm gonna be your last companion... right?" she simply nodded and finally smiled.

"Don't worry... it's fine... once I see our Deity, I'm going to ask him to reincarnate me again... but as a normal human being." then she laughed.

"It's our ancestor's fault... right?" I huffed as I try to save some strength to continue, "they betrayed your grandfather... threatened the Eurytons... annihilated your clan... your family..." she once again nodded.

"Did Der—"

"Yes... Derek told me that that was the reward that you gave him."

"Don't worry... you'll be rewarded too... If you're a good boy..." she replied and laughed "You know what, I'm gonna take back what I said the first time we met... I like you." I instantly blushed and turned my head, trying to hide my reaction, "from the start I have always felt that we have mutuality..." she continued.

"I know what you mean..." I replied "... the both of us seem to oppose the situation that we're in, right?" she nodded, "the only thing is... unlike you... I can't oppose my family's will... I'll bring disappointment to our family."

"That's what I used to think, but in the end I still gave up... and now, here I am," then she chuckled, "spending the last days of my life, imprisoned... but that's fine by me, I have lived for a while and after all... it's the right thing to do."

"Hey... wanna play another game?" I asked.

"Sure..." she replied. "... but aren't you going to be late for school?" I laughed at her question.

"Dummy... It's Sunday..." I replied, still laughing. She stared for a while and after a few seconds, she scowled at me.

"Well... I'm sorry... try being imprisoned... you'll definitely loose your track of day and time."

"So..." I finally replied after laughing "... two truths and a lie... I hate the Barises, I hate myself, I hate you..." she frowned as I said the last statement.

"Wow... I just told you that I like you then now you're telling me that you hate me?"

"Just guess..." I replied with a grin on my face.

"Of course, the first one, how can you even hate your own family." I laughed as she rolled her eyes.

"The lie is the last statement... I would never hate someone who is as precious as you, you dummy..."
