Chapter 1 - What Is This Place

My eyes flutter open. Morning already? I don't remember falling asleep. I take a deep breath and begin to stretch but my body freezes. Underneath me is not my bed. I put my palms onto the cold earth below me. Dirt? Where am I?

I sit up and try looking through the dark. It's foggy. Super foggy here. I slowly get onto my feet and stand up, looking around cautiously. I see a tall shadow a few feet away from me. I startle, worried it's a person, but when I go towards it I see that it's a tree. A tree? I live in the middle of Portland, Oregon. A city, there are no trees here. I peek around the tree but my heart sinks when I see more.

I slowly move my feet, walking in one direction. I don't even know where I'm going, but I'm bound to run into someone somewhere, right? My heart slowly starts pounding and my hair stands on end. Someone is watching me. I stop moving and hold my breath, listening to the air whistle and the leaves shift around me. I definitely heard someone walking behind me. Unless there's an echo out here. Then I hear a faint growl.

I turn around quickly, "H-Hello?" I ask nervously to see a tall, disfigured silhouette appear in the fog ten feet away from me. The figure is about nine feet tall. I tilt my head up, my heart in my throat which I swallow down before the creature starts moving towards me.

I spin on my heel and take off running. There's no way I-a 5'2" tall teenager-can outrun something that's nine feet tall. But I'll still try.

I can hear the creature quickly catching up to me, but my foot slips and I fall. I expect to hit the ground but the falling sensation stays with me, and I realize I've fallen into some kind of deep hole. I scream, seeing a light below me.

Before I reach the light, I feel myself losing consciousness from the drop itself. My eyes flutter closed again.
