Chapter 4 - A Kind Soul

I've been at Blue Harbor for only a few hours and it's already feeling more like home than my parent's house ever did. Noah explains how everything works around here, from dinner time to when it's lights out. "So breakfast is at 7:30- which is super early if you ask me- and after that, there's all these little activities and crafts they have so that we can have something to do, but it's mainly for the younger kids. Lunch is at like 12:30, i think. Susana usually announces it." Noah is a trans guy and was kicked out just like I was. He's so relatable and friendly, I'm glad he's my friend. The Older Teen Room has three smaller rooms in them, each with a bunk bed and a dresser. Noah agreed to share his room with me. Noah, being the kind soul he is, said I could have the top bunk. He's been here a few weeks longer than me and already seems to be in control here. He's so cool. I ask him about his talents, if he has or had a job, what his parents were like, and all that good stuff. Y'know, small talk in the homeless shelter. "Well," he says, "I can play guitar and my only 'job' is playing songs for people on the street. It's decent money, but long hours. My parents were pretty horrible, when I came out, they started with the "I didn't raise a boy; you're meant to be a girl!" nonsense and I thought they'd come around but they didn't so I just.. left." His story is so similar to mine that it's scary, except he had the bravery to leave on his own. "My story is almost exactly like that- well except for being able to play guitar- but they started with that nonsense also. My only job was walking dogs the last few summers and that's where I got my small amount of money. I came out earlier this afternoon and they kicked me out immediately. They didn't even want to consider having a daughter. I took myself down to a gas station, bought food, and ended up here." I say to him, the memory is still raw in my mind. "Well don't worry Miah, this is our second chance. We can rebuild our broken lives together." Noah says to me. And for once, I feel hopeful.
