Chapter 59 - Deep Pit

We threw papers, folders, pictures and any other intel we can get our hands on in the room, seems like the guy was the only insurgent in this room, say...Is there an armory here? Holding weapons they stole or those guns are long gone.

The place was littered with papers, holding information i don't have the time to think about, filling my bag to the very brim, Alina left the room, following behind her with a heavy and full bag of papers to files to pictures of any sort. Wonder where the weapons are stored in.

Soon. We got back to Sebastian.

"Damon doing good?" Sebastian asked me. I nodded at him in response.

"Ok, come, let's keep sweeping the area." Sebastian leads us once again with his rifle pointed at the front, passed the 2 intersections, advancing through our main route.

Deeper through the mines, carts to barrels became more apparent in the shaft, tipped over or moved to the sides. Is this theirs? Or just stuff abandoned they haven't removed yet.

"Is that an elevator?" Sebastian stopped walking forward, in front. A large mineshaft elevator with a gate, looks horribly rusted and broken though.

Alina steps closer to it, she brushes her hand on the gate.

"Doesn't look functional at all, from here it just looks rundown and busted. And there isn't a hole going up or down from my view here, must've been filled up. Pretty much useless." Alina explained.

"So our trip here is done then, alright. Let's head back to the main route." Sebastian ordered.

The group walked back the way we came, the path still littered with carts. More carts than usual.....I didn't see these before.

"HANDS UP!" Figures emerging from the intersections aimed at us, laser sights beamed directly at us, more and more hastily ran out of the 2 tunnel sections, blocking our path.

Near to us, a few carts, they probably brought them here.

"When i say go. Hide behind the carts, got it?" Sebastian asked.

"Yes" We all responded back to him in the comms.

"NOW" We ran to the carts, turned over or still standing.

I ran to a filled up cart, bullets slammed into it, making constant dinging noises as it did.

"Stephen where are you!?" Sebastian shouted in his comms.

"Back at the main section, what's going on?"

"A group of insurgents got us pinned, we need your support from behind." Sebastian commanded.

"Alright then." Stephen replied, rapid muffled footsteps came after.

I stayed hidden from gunfire as they kept firing.

"We can't hit em from this position, can't peak our heads out. Shoot from the side instead, push these carts forward." Sebastian commanded us, also hiding behind another cart.

With all the force i can muster up while crouched, i pushed the cart forward. Harder without rails and this rocky dirt. Looking down as i did, i realized i was moving it at a snail's pace.

"Stop for now, any closer and we might be gunned down, fire your weapons from the side even if you aren't hitting anything. We were still a short distance from the squad firing at us. Don't know how long this cart can hold out.

I peeked my rifle out to the side, still holding it with my two hands making sure to show the least amount of my hands as possible. Pointing at anything, i pulled the trigger repeatedly, can't hear any yelps in this gunfight. Echoing gunshots along with the constant barrage of bullets.

"I see em, hold on." Stephen yelled.

Gunfire from a farther distance joined in, a brief cease of fire followed after, continuing again.

"Some of em are distracted, take advantage of this. Aim from the sides or the top now!" I poked my head out, now aiming my scope, there were people in my crosshairs, insurgents hiding from Stephen's team. I fired at the hiding insurgents, hitting their chests or heads.

In just a couple of seconds, the gunfight stopped.

A quick change of magazine, i step out of cover. We soon reunited with each other.

"One last route now. Anyone still have room in their bags for more intel?" Sebastian questioned all of us.

We replied in a mix of no's.

"Filled up already. Last thing to do now is clear the mines. Let's head out now, one last route now." Sebastian added.

Now united to one group again, we moved back to the center area.

Our new path ahead is straight ahead, just this route left, unless we come across a way to head down.

We continued further down, we saw a mine of sorts down below from that office, wonder if they're still there.

We reached a section of the shaft, instead of more dirt walls. Walls of glass gave us view of what's down below.

I looked through the glass, there wasn't a soul in sight. Must've escaped after hearing the gunfight. Close by, a large dark tunnel leading to something.

"They most likely left by now, it's risky to continue, we have what we need, nothing to clear now."

The others peered to the other side of this ravine. Nothing as well.

A sudden rumbling of the ground knocked us on our backs.

"What was that?" Thalia asked.

In front of us, a bright light of fire blazed the entire section.

"The area's blowing up!" Sebastian yelled.

"Run!"

We ran as fast as we could. Behind us more explosions followed. destroying scaffolding, burying everything in heavy rocks & dirt. We got the stairwell, the lighting soon dying out. With fire and explosions lighting our way now.

The last step to the outside i leapt out through the door. The explosions stopped, looking back, the stairwell started collapsing.

"Lennox, Mary get the prisoner. Were heading back now." The 2 rushed to the tied up man, untying him.

"Is everyone alright?" I helped up some of my teammates, still on the ground. Maybe jumped just like me.

"Yeah, let's go now." Thalia enunciated.

Back into this unforgiving cold. The mines felt warmer than here.
