Angel's POV:
I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. I sat up quickly and got lightheaded. "Uh ugh. Oh God." I muttered. I threw the covers off of me and stood up. That only made it worse. I crouched down and out my head between my legs. After about ten seconds, I recovered and stood up. I walked out my room and to the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror. Another day huh? I walked over to the shower and got in. I turned it on and washed myself.
I let the water wash over my body. After I was done, I got out and dried off. I threw on some clothes and grabbed my phone. I looked at it. 100%? Good. I hate when I wake up and my phone's not charged, when I thought I put it on the charger. I walked out the door and downstairs in the apartment complex. I walked to my car and got in. I turned it on and drove off. I was heading into town for my Evaluation.
I looked at my wings in the rear view mirror. I blew a breath. I liked my wings but I did wanted very much to upgrade them so badly. Humans have evolved to the point where we got wings. It was crazy. One day, your back is there, everything's normal. The next, boom, you got wings. This happened over fifty years ago. My parents gave to me with all my wings and glory. But having wings meant we had to come with a price.
We had to get Evaluations. That means in order to keep our wings, we had to go to a special place to see what kind of wings to upgrade them with. The machine would scan you and tell you what kind of person you are, as if you already didn't know. Based on your personality, the machine will tell you if your an Angel or a demon. But it doesn't mean whether or not you'll go to Hell if you're a demon or you'll go to Heaven if you're an angel.
Like I said, it's based off your personality. Where you go to in your next life is your business, whether you believe in the afterlife or not. I pulled up to the special place and parked. The Evaluation place is honestly like a DMV. You go in the room, do what you gotta do, the machine will upgrade your wings and tell what kind of person you are, and that's it. I looked up at the building. I took a deep breath and got out the car. Even though we can fly, some people still chose to drive cars.
I mean we are still human beings. We had to do things before wings. I do fly. But the government cracked down on people flying for too long. Apparently a little boy fly up too high and flown for too long that he fell asleep midair and ended up getting caught in an airplane engine fan. He got grinded up badly. It was so sad. So as a result, if you've been drinking in the last twenty four hours or flying too long, you weren't allowed to fly.
Some people still do it but it's not my business. Anyways, everyone had to get an Evaluation. If you didn't, your wings will wilt and fall off and you will get a severe back infection that you'll die from. And plus the government can see who had Evaluations or not. I walked inside and saw the waiting room. A lot of people were in here. There were barely any seats available. Luckily, there was one open seat beside two red heads. I sat down beside them.
I looked at both of them. Both of them are freaking gorgeous. I felt my phone vibrate. Then it's started ringing. I scrambled to quickly shut it off. When I did, I looked around and saw people staring at me. I chuckled nervously. "I love that song." Someone said. I turned my head and saw the red head girl talking to me. She had green eyes and a pretty smile. "What song? My ringtone?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yeah. I love that song. Black and Blue by Being As An Ocean." She said. "I love that song too. It's my favorite song in the whole world." I said. "I'm Skylar." She said. "Angel." I said, as I held my hand out.
She stared at me before shaking my hand. "Angel? Is that really your name? Or do you just assume you're an Angel?" She asked. "No that's real name. My parents named me because they believe there are guardian angels around me." I said. "Aww." Someone said. I turned my head to the other side and saw the other red head staring at me. "That's so cute." She said. "Yeah my parents were religious nuts but I still love them." I said.
"Same. My parents put crosses in every room of them when I was growing up. Like I'm a believer and all-" I cut her off. "But there is such a thing as moderation." I said. "Exactly." She said, laughing. "I have somewhat of the same experience. My Dad is an atheist yet my Mom is a Christian. They were both at odds over what side to put me on." Skylar said. We looked at her. "So what side are you on?" I asked, curiously. "I'm a Christian. I do believe in God. I believe things happen for a reason." She said. I smiled.
"Yeah I don't like to talk about God that much." I said. They looked at me. She put her hands up. "Let me explain. I do believe in God and I'm not ashamed of Him or anything but like you said, some people are atheists and they believe in other gods but I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable." I said. "I feel the same way. Like you don't know who believes in what do you keep your mouth shut." The other girl said. "Exactly." I said. She nodded. "I'm Riley." She said.
Suddenly two doors flew open, everyone looked up and saw a woman standing in the doorway. She was looking at a clipboard. "Alright people, we're running behind schedule so today, we're gonna have you go in there in groups of three. I need twelve people." She announced. I watched as people scrambled to go through the doors. Security had to hold them back. "Hold up. That's more than twelve. The rest of you have a seat. I'll come back when it's clear." The woman said.
I looked at Skylar and Riley. They both giggled. "I mean I get they want to see what they're wings will upgrade to but damn." Riley said. "Yeah. Did you see that man right there? He almost knocked that pregnant woman down." Skylar said. I shook my head. "That's the sad reality of what people do to make it in life. Step on others to get ahead." I said. I thought about that. "Then again, it's sometimes the only way to make it." I said.
"Yeah but nothing stepping on a pregnant woman." Skylar said. "Oh yeah definitely." I said. As time went by, we talked til it was our turn to go in. We saw a lone standing outside a door. Then flashing lights happened on the other side of the door. Then a man came out with the lady we saw before. "You guys...It's so amazing." The man said, in a high voice. The lady pushed him off and some security guards got him. "Next!! Come on people. We don't have all day." The lady said.
After awhile, me, Skylar, and Riley walked in. I looked around at the room. It was brightly lit with men standing around with big safety goggles on. "Okay whose first?" A man asked. I looked at Skylar and Riley. "Do you guys wanna go?" I asked. "One of you just go!! We do not have all day!!" The lady yelled. It took everything in me not to smack her. I walked up on the machine and stood there. "What's your name?" A man asked. "Angel." I said. He looked at me. "Your real full name please." He said.
"Angel is my real name. Angel Starlight." I said. He turned around and looked at everyone else. The machine then made a sound. "Huh. So that is your real name." He muttered. I rolled my eyes. This is why I hated my name. Every time I tell people my name, they think I'm lying. I love my parents but I wish they named me something different.
"Okay Angel, answer these questions and be honest, but see that green X in front of you? Stand on it." The man said. I stepped forward. I answered the questions one by one until it came for the final one. "Are you a virgin?" The man asked. I blushed. Hard. "Um excuse me?" I said. "Angel just answer the question. We have a lot more people to get to today." He said. He tilted his head at me. "Ye-yes. I'm a virgin." I said. I thought I saw his mouth twitch into a smile. Suddenly, the machine turned on.
The lady turned the light off and gave Skylar and Riley safety goggles. "Please look into the camera." She said. "Stand clear." The man said. Then there was a big flash of light. It came out of my chest. It blinded me for about five seconds. I blinked and stepped down. "There you go. Angel you are....an Angel. Just what your name is." The lady said. She gave me my Evaluation paper. I signed all the forms when I suddenly got lightheaded.
"Whoa. It's amazing." I said, in a high voice. "Yeah people get this way because of the flash. Just step outside, get some fresh air, and you'll recover." The lady said. "Alright whose next?" The man asked. Riley stepped into the machine. I was escorted out of the building. As soon as fresh air hit me, I was no longer lightheaded. I walked over to my car and got in. I don't know why but I felt strange. I looked at my wings in the rear view mirror and gasped. "They're amazing." I said.
I touched them and I immediately recoiled my hand, as they were hot to the touch. "Ouch!! Damn." I said. I turned on my car and was about to drive away when I saw Skylar and Riley being escorted out by the security guards. I gasped softly at their wings. They had wings just like mine, except Skylar's was pink and Riley's was green. I beeped my horn, making them look at me. "Hi. It was nice meeting you guys." I said.
"You too." They both said. I drove off towards town and pulled up to the store. I'm sure my boss wouldn't mind me being a little late. I haven't had anything to eat this morning. I went in Family Dollar and grabbed some snacks. I paid for them and walked out. I looked up and seen Skylar and Riley pull up. "So you guys followed me?" I asked. They looked at me and gasped. "Oh wow." Skylar said. "We all came here? Dude that's nuts. I came to get my grandpa his favorite chips." Riley said.
"I came here to get some hair products." Skylar said. "I came to get some snacks before I head off to work." I said. I waved goodbye and got in my car. I drove off towards my job. I parked and quickly got out. I ran inside and was met with the receptionist. She looked up at me. "Oh Angel. You're late." She hissed. "I know. There was a long line at the Evaluations place." I said. She looked behind me.
"Wow. So you are an Angel indeed. Your wings are nice." She said. She sniffed the air. "Oh the new wings smell is always amazing, just like you're scent." She said. I rolled my eyes. Everyone I've come into contact with have told me I smell like vanilla. I didn't understand why or how, as I don't eat that many food that has vanilla in them. I like vanilla pudding but that's about it. "Let me see." The receptionist said.
She touched my wings and immediately recoiled her hands. "Ouch." She said. "Yeah I just came from the place." I said. "Oh. Well hurry up and go to the top floor. She waiting for you." She said. I nodded and ran to the elevator. It went up to the tenth floor and got off. I ran down the hall and saw my friend, Peter. He looked up at me and stood up. "Angel bitch. You are late." He said. "I know I know. I was at the Evaluations place and there was a lot of people there." I said.
"Hurry up. Girl Wanda is pissed." He said. "What now?" I asked. "Her mother slept with her ex boyfriend." He said. "Again? Why would she care? She got a whole husband." I said. "He must not be hitting it right because she always got a bug up her ass. If it's not one thing that's pisses her off, it's another." He said. I laughed. I loved Peter. He was the gay best friend everyone should have. He loves gossip and loves to be nosey, but what human being isn't nosey?
"Ooh Angel. Your wings are looking fabulous girl." He said. "Thank you. Don't bother touching them. They are still hot." I said. "Glad you said something, because I was finna touchy touchy." He said. He opens the door and I saw my boss. She was yelling at a woman. I knew her. She had Down syndrome and had a tough time here. After Wanda got down yelling at her, she walked out the room with tears in her eyes. I felt bad for her. I looked at Wanda. She glared at me. "You're late." She said, harshly.
"I know I know. I went to Evaluations today and there was dozens of people-" she cut me off by raising her hand. "I didn't ask, therefore I don't care. Where's my coffee?" She asked. "Isn't that her job?" I asked, referring to the girl who ran out of the room. "Not anymore. I just fired her. She had Down syndrome. No one with disabilities is gonna work here. Now it's your job to get me coffee. Now!!" She said. I turned around. "Wait. What's that in your hand?" She asked. I looked at her.
"Slim Jim's. I didn't eat anything this morning." I said. She grabbed the boxes and ate some. "But those were-" I stopped when she glared at me. "Coffee. Go get it." She ordered. I turned around and walked out the door. "Damn. Her husband must not be hitting that right. She needs a dick ASAP." I said. Peter nodded. "Told you. That bitch needs to get a vibrator or something because she needs to let loose." He said.
"Where am I gonna get her coffee? I don't know what she likes." I said. "Get her decaf from Starbucks. Make sure they have whip cream or else she'll flip." He said. I nodded and ran to the elevator. It went down and took me to the parking lot. I got out and ran to my car. I got in and cut my car on. I saw the gas light was on. Ah shit. I don't have time. I got out and looked at my wings. I shook my head and got back in the car.
I knew I couldn't fly right now. After Evaluations, you're supposed to wait til tomorrow to fly. Your wings are under stress from upgrading so now I had to drive to the gas station, then to Starbucks, and back to my job. It was hard and I came back late. Wanda was pissed. "Now make sure my Mom gets the warning, fuck my ex boyfriend again, and those saggy titties getting sliced off." She said. My eyes widened at her. She saying this about her own mother?!
"And make sure you go get the gift basket my friend is giving me. I didn't make it to her baby shower last weekend because she scheduled it on a Saturday, the day of my daughter's school dance so she owes me a gift basket." She said. I looked at her. "What? Her baby shower- she owes you?" I asked, curiously. She nodded. "Yes Angel!! What do I need to repeat?!" She asked, angrily. Just about everything if I'm honest. "Nothing." I said.
"Peter is supposed to be getting a card from someone in a blue suit later on. Make sure he brings it to you and only you. Then you give it to me. I'm expecting some money from a guy who owes me lots favors." She continued. She ranted on and on about my new duties since she fired the girl with Down syndrome. It would mean I get a bigger paycheck but it also meant I had to do even more work. "And Angel?" Wanda called.
I looked at her. "I have something very important for you to do tomorrow." She said. "Oh I can't. I have to go back to my college classes." I said. She knows I have school throughout the week. The only reason I didn't have to go today is because the college campus to be painted and had construction work done on some buildings these past few weeks. But we had online classes. Wanda walked upstairs to me.
"I'll deal with your college professors. I'll send out an email saying that your being pulled for the day. Then you can go back." She said, lowly. It took everything in me not to throw all of this stuff in her face. "As a matter of fact." She said, as she walked over to her computer and company phone. She pulled up my school website and called my professors. She told all of them that's I won't be in school tomorrow.
She even cussed two of them out when they objected. "There." She said, smiling. I stared at her. "So what do I have to do tomorrow?" I asked, curiously. She narrowed her eyes at me. "I'll tell you tomorrow. Just get that stuff filled out and done." She said. She dismissed me and sat down at her desk. I walked out the door and to the elevator. I looked at Peter. "Ooooh babygirl. You look tired." He said. "I am." I said.
I looked at the time. It was around nine o clock at night. I took my stuff and put it in my car. I sat back in the car and took some deep breaths. I turned it my car and drove away. I stopped at a stop light and turned my head. I saw the movie theater. I could use a movie. I drove towards the movie theater and parked. I got out and walked inside the building. I picked a movie and ordered popcorn.
I walked to the screening room and looked around. It was packed. Oh come on. I saw an empty seat next to two girls. I sat down in between them. Suddenly, one of them grabbed my popcorn. I looked at her and gasped. "Riley?"'I said. She smiled. "Hey. Are you following me?" She asked. I shook my head. "No of course not. I just needed to watch a movie." I said.
"What happened?" Someone asked. I turned my head to the other side and saw Skylar. "Oh hey." I said. She smiled. "You good?" She asked. I shook my head. "Not really. I've had a very rough day and I thought maybe a movie could help me relax." I said. "Yeah me too. My boss was making crazy demand. Apparently I have some kind of interview tomorrow. I hope it's for a better job because I can't take it with my boss anymore." Skylar said.
"What happened?" I asked. "He keeps flirting with me and groping me. It's a living hell for me." She said. "Same here. My boss makes me do outrageous work. He has me wash his car, wash his dog, watch his kids while he fucks his mistress in the closet, makes me do all of his work and yet he still doesn't pay me well enough. I need another job." Riley said. "Huh. Sounds like we all had a rough day at work." I said.
They both nodded. "Well I guess that's something we have in common: outrageous bosses." I said. They both giggled. We watched the movie The Meg. It was kinda weird how we watched something that pertained to our situation. Like how in the end, all sharks and humans had a common enemy: the Meg. When we left the cinema, we talked in the parking lot.
I laughed. "You guys are awesome. Here's my number." I said. I gave them both my number and they gave me theirs. "So I'll see you guys soon?" Skylar asked. We nodded. We said our goodbyes and went home. Well at least one good thing happened today.
