"Did you fall asleep in the field?" My dad asked, breaking the beautiful silence.
"Yeah." I replied. More silence.
"So, I was thinking Liz..." He stopped.
"Continue." I replied after a minute of quiet thinking.
"I think it may be time for you to try public school. You haven't really-"
"What? No! I can't! Are you insane?"
"I know, I know. But I think you might be happier if"
"If what? If I had friends? Because I did and you took that away from me! You moved me here!" I got up, walking back to the field.
The horse trotted over to me when she saw me.
"I think I'll call you Maya." I told her. She crouched down and I got on her. She must be wild or someone would've gotten her by now. We messed around for an hour or two before it was time to go back home.
"So..." My dad started trying to make some conversation during dinner. I wasn't hungry and I didn't want to talk to him. I got up and mumbled "I'm going for a walk" I wanted to head for Maya but that's the first place my dad would look for me. I started walking and getting my thoughts straight. Not only does my dad want to throw me in public school but he wants to throw me into sixth grade, the first year of middle school? No way was he putting a 12 year old who just lost her mom, moved from all her friends and has been home schooled her while life into a school with tons of other kids. I'm not going.
"Hey, are you new?" I looked over and saw a kid standing there. He was about my size also looked my age. He had black or really dark brown hair and glasses.
"Yeah, I moved here last week." I told him and tried to keep walking.
"I'm Tyler." He said sticking out his hand.
"Lizzy." I said shaking out his hand.
"Nice to meet you, Lizzy. Have you met Olive yet? She's the only other kid who lives around here."
"No, I haven't."
"If you're up for it, we could go to her house and see if she wants to play or something?"
"Sure, why not. I don't have anything else to do." He grabbed his jacket and we headed over to her house.
"Do you go to HiddenVally?"
"No, I'm home schooled actually. I have too much social anxiety to be in an actual school without the knowing anyone."
"Well, now you know me. And you're about to know Olive, too." He knocked on the door and a girl with straight light brown hair and green eyes answered.
"Oh hey Tyler. Who's this?"
"This is Lizzy. She's new."
"Oh hi. It's nice to have another kid around here I'm Olive." I nodded my head. I guess I forgot what it was like to talk to kids my own age. We started walking and learning a bit about each other. Friends? Maybe I would go to public school after all.
