"Okay guys, this is Maya. I met her last Wednesday night and I'm pretty sure she's wild."
"Awww! Hi Maya, I'm Olive." Olive started playing with Maya.
"So, do you just ride her around?" Tyler asked. Clearly he isn't too sure on this, which scares me.
"Yeah, for the most part. Want to ride her?" I ask hoping maybe he'll lighten up a bit.
"Sure why not?" He said as I helped him on to her. He smiled, and we rode around for a bit.
"Guys, what's that?" Olive asked pointing I to the distance.
"I'm not sure, should we check it out?" I ask. I wanted to but wasn't sure if that would be a good idea. It's clearly just a house or something so what's the harm?
"Kind of, yeah." Tyler said and started toward it . I followed after them with Maya.
When we got there, we saw it was an old, broken down, abandoned barn.
"Guys. What if Maya isn't wild and she lived here?" Olive said looking around in awe.
"Maybe..." Tyler replied slowly. He's thinking something.
"Guys! I have an idea!" I shouted at them.
"Ooh! What is it?" Olive asked exited to hear my answer.
"Are you going to say we do some research on horses?" Tyler asked looking at me.
"No. Well, kind of, that'd be part of it, yes. But we should fix up this place and keep Maya in here for shelter! We could take care of her!" I purposed the idea and I could tell they liked it based on their smiles and looks on their faces. "So it's settled. Tonight Lizzy and I will do research and teach you it tomorrow after school. Sound good?" Olive checked.
"Yep." We both replied. We rode Maya back to the main part of the field and said bye.
"Hello Lizzy." Olives mom greeted me when we walked in the door.
"Hi. Nice house." I said as we walked to the kitchen for snacks. I haven't had to meet parents of a friend in a while. I really didn't want to screw this up. We grabbed Cheez-Itz and pretzels then walked down the hallway to her room.
After talking for a while and doing some research on horses, we found out that Maya's breed is called a Thoroughbred. They are best known for racing but I know that Maya isn't built for that. We think she could also be a Cleveland Bay AKA English Warm blood. But more likely a thoroughbred.
We ate dinner and finished getting me organized for the morning. There was a mixture of excitment and fear. We crawled into bed around ten-thirty and somehow had no trouble sleeping.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
I jumped up. I hate alarms. My heart was racing and I was shaking because of it. It was six in the morning. Olive turned it off.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I hate alarms. Anyway, let's get ready." I said talking quickly out of nervousness. We ate French toast and got dressed. Tyler came over because he was ready before us.
With ten minutes to spare before we had to leave, we caught him up on what we learned about Maya last night and we agreed to go directly to her after school and start fixing the barn.
It was still dark out and it was cold but the fear and adrenaline kept me warm and awake. It was just us three. Until the bus pulled up. I took a deep breath and stepped onto the bus, Olive and Tyler behind me. I froze and all that excitment was gone. Fear. Straight fear.
