Chereads / A Man Among Gods / Chapter 10 - Training With Death

Chapter 10 - Training With Death

Ever since Zomarus left the cave all he saw was his destiny. That night it became unbearable for him to sleep. All he could see was the memory of Tura getting stabbed. He woke up in a puddle of his own sweat from all his night terrors.

"Why can't I stop thinking about this. It's all your fault".

Zomarus got up from his bed and started to bang his head on the wall repeatedly.

"Get out!! Get out of my head!!"

His voice began to rise as blood came from his forehead. This didn't stop until the voice from before spoke.

"Is this what she would want? For you to die here like the coward you are."

"Shut up! You do not have the right to talk about me. You don't know half the shit I've gone through!"

Zomarus' body came to a stop as the darkness that entered his body before came out and formed a figure. The figure was only a shadow with no facial features. It overcame the room as it covered it in darkness.

"You are not special, boy. I've come across many who are cowards just like you. Many of them have died to my hand, but you are not worthy of such a death."

This angered Zomarus as he ran up to the shadow trying to punch it. He couldn't even lay a finger on the shadow. And it made him laugh out in agony.

"Ha, not worthy? I've heard that phrase all my life. 'Not worthy to be in this city', 'not worthy of living', 'not worthy of being my son'. Your words mean nothing to me anymore."

Zomarus then fell on his knees and smashed the floor, with tears running down his face. "If this is the case, then.. then what is it to be worthy?"

"In this world being strong is the same as being worthy. If you can not stand on your own two feet, then it is the same as not being worthy of living."

The shadow held his hand out to the boy, and waited for his answer. "If you seek power then I could help you. If you help this old man return to his original body then I can promise you all the power you can ever ask for."

Zomarus from the ground looked up at the shadow and hesitated.

"How can I trust your empty promises?"

"It's the same reason as before. Because Death never lies"

The figure moved his hand a little more waiting for Zomarus' answer. And without another thought he tried to shake the shadow's hand before it went through.

"Then it is settled. Once I've returned to my original body I will become your master. However, for now I will stay in your soul space until that day comes." The darkness then left the room and returned to Zomarus' body.

Zomarus felt this pain in his stomach and immediately threw up a black liquid. Now he began to question if this was the right decision. He headed outside to gather his thoughts.

Was this the right decision to make? What if he was lying to him? Where could he find the shadow's physical body? And how come he called himself Death when Death was Lurtar's mother.

There were too many questions to answer. He decided to ask the shadow later and went to bed.

After the long sleep, Zomarus woke up to the shadow figure preparing a potion. The potion did not have a pleasant smell as it almost made him vomit again.

"What is that horrible stench?" Zomarus asked.

The shadow continued to work on the potion while speaking with the young boy. "Well last night I could hardly fit inside that small soul space of yours. Then I decided to make a potion to increase your soul space by ten folds. Which for a god, will still be extremely small."

"I've never heard of such a thing. Are you sure such a potion exists, and if it did the entire city would know about it."

"Of course such a potion exists. I would know since I was the one who created it. However, only five people know of its existence, and now you will become the sixth person."

The potion was now completed and was given to the hands of Zomarus. The potion was a dark red color which almost looked like blood.

He took the potion and without another question he drank it down. As he did an enormous amount of spiritual energy began to come out of his body. His body felt as if it was dying ten folds over, and it was the most painful thing he's ever experienced.

"You will not absorb the energy from the potion if you continue to let it escape. Focus the spiritual energy towards your soul space and let it expand. Let the power flow through you."

With the Master's advice he calmed down and tried to focus the energy. First he would have to stop the energy from escaping his body, and then redirect it towards his soul space.

After a couple of hours it was finally done. His body was now exhausted but stronger. He laid down with a smile on his face looking up at the shadow.

"I did it. I finally was able to redirect the spiritual energy."

"Great! Now that you have finished I can take a nap. Do not wake up this master until I have restored my energy." From this the shadow went into Zomarus' soul space which was now large enough to hold the master and his belongings.

Zomarus could only laugh as now he would become stronger and be worthy enough for everyone.

Now Zomarus knew that this Master was not lying. He had the power to make him stronger, but he still did not know his true identity.

The day was still lively since it was midday. Zomarus left his dorm room and headed to the courtyard where most of the students were. Since it was an off day many students could be seen talking and not studying.

Since Zomarus had no friends he would spend most of his time in the library. He read a lot, but really went for the peace and quiet. This day was no different since the library was empty besides a couple of students reading.

To better understand what was going on he searched the library for books on potions, and the history of Death. She was an important figure in history and the wars of the past, so it would be easy to find history on her.

However, when he read up on death there was nothing about his new master. The only information he could find about a male Death was in fairytales and nothing more. It was frustrating for Zomarus since he wanted to know more about the person inside his soul space.

After a while he made his way towards the potion books he grabbed. In the book were potions about normal grade potion such as healing, poison, and night vision. Nothing could be found on soul expansion or anything about increasing spiritual energy.

Zomarus was left with no answers, and no closer to finding out who his master was. Before he closed the books a sweet voice came from behind him.

"Zomarus?"

He turned his head and saw Iva, the school beauty. He was confused on why she was talking to him on school grounds. After their surprising encounter weeks ago, he thought she had completely forgotten about him.

When Iva saw Zomarus she walked up and sat in the seat across from him.

"Sorry for being a bother. Hopefully you were not busy studying." She said with grace.

"Oh no, of course not. I was just about to leave. Could there be a reason why the school beauty called out for me?"

The idea of being called the school beauty from Zomarus made Iva chuckle.

For Zomarus this was the first time he could see the school beauty properly laugh, and it was better than he expected. Iva was an ice queen who never showed any emotion, but in front of him she was really laughing.

From behind a bookshelf stood Lurtar. He had never seen Iva show any emotion and now she was laughing with literal trash. His blood was boiling but couldn't do anything in front of Iva.

"Trash should not be allowed to talk to a queen."
