Chapter 10 - Chapter 9

"That's not it. They never offered anything, and I wasn't bothered enough to ask." That was the truth indeed. I never asked for anything because I knew they had nothing worth taking. And they never offered either because they knew that as well.

The mayor rolled his eyes. "Well no matter. You all shall receive the reward that I had originally given."

A menu box appeared in front of my vision. It read Quest Complete. Reward, 10,000 EXP.

It seemed that he wasn't lying. The reward really was 10,000 EXP and gold. Sora and friends were extremely excited about this, and on the party hub in the top left corner of my vision, I saw their levels go up by 8, except Rubellia who went up 9.

I didn't pay too much mind to my level. I wanted to keep leveling up until I felt the difference. Though deep down, I knew my stats didn't jump much, so that was another reason.

Oh, I also think I know why my stats went up slower...I think.

It's because I didn't have Mana in my body. The people from this world had Mana in their bodies, and I'm assuming it's this Mana that made their stats grow much more than mine. I didn't have any because the world I came from didn't have it, meaning I'm the only human in this world that can't use it.

The weirdest thing is that skills used SP, which I noticed my party members didn't have. Which is weird, but whatever.

I could also learn certain skills and power them up using skill points that I acquired from leveling up, but I couldn't level them higher than half my level. I tried using some in the Magic category to learn spells, but when I tried to touch it a window would pop up saying "Error. Unavailable due to lack of mana." Because of that I have over thirty unused skill points.

However, I'm not the only person who can't use magic. There's an entire race that couldn't use it either, or so I had heard. I don't really know how much information I can trust just from eavesdropping on conversations from when I was in the capital. But I well remember hearing a man say something about this race, the Beast-kin, which were like animal people...

Seriously, is this world a dream come true?!

Anyway, I had asked Sora and them about the race when were were on our way to the village. I was told that the race as a whole was known as the Beast-kin, but different traits were divided into sub races. Like cat people were known as Nekorians, bear people were known as Nomourians, and so on.

They're also treated as outcasts, due to their lack of Mana, which in this world is considered a gift from the Gods. So they are considered cursed being that have been forsaken by the Gods.

"So, you have a legendary sword, huh?" Sora broke me out of my thoughts. I looked around and noticed that the Elf girl, who had been standing near us until now, was gone. Some other Elves were gone too, and I assumed they were going to get our gold or something.

"Huh? Oh....Guess so," I replied inattentively.

"Well, what can it do?" She got in my face. I flinched back slightly.

"N-no idea."

"What do you mean you have no idea? It's your sword!"

"I didn't even known until now that it was legendary."

"Well then let's ask the mayor!" She grabbed my sword, unsheathed it, and began running towards the mayor. "Please appraise this and tell us what it can do!" As she spoke she had gotten on one knee and held the sword up to him, almost like a knight swearing their allegiance to the crown.

"Of course." He smiled as he inspected it. You could hear him humming as he looked at the weapons stats and info. "Interesting." He finally spoke after a few moments.

"What?" Sora was more excited about the sword than I.

"This sword can channel Mana through it, allowing you to change its attribute." The mayor spoke bluntly.

"What's that mean?" Sora laughed.

Even with his bluntness, she was oblivious to half the words he just said.

Is she stupid?

"It means if you are fighting a monster that is weak to fire, you can cover the sword in fire using your Mana and kill the monster with its weakness."

"Wow...that sounds cool."

"Indeed...How did you get your hands on this?"

"I had it custom made."

"By who?"

"...Friends?" I thought about Ellie and how she called me a pervert. Could she really be called a friend? Probably not. I frowned but quickly returned to my normal blank stare.

"Hmm..." The mayor went quiet as he inspected me.

I didn't like the look. It was a look of curiosity, a look that made my skin crawl. Although I couldn't tell what he was thinking, a feeling of unease overcame me. If anything, he figured something out about me.

The Elves were an extremely intelligent race, as it always was in video games. They excelled in skills like appraising, using magic, and archery. They seemed to be the exact same way in this world.

"Well, it seems you haven't given it a name," the mayor spoke as Sora returned the sword to me.

"Why would I name a weapon?" I asked. Usually weapons have names in games, but it didn't work like that in real life, even in this life. So I saw no point in naming it.

"Well, when you have a S ranked weapon, you are supposed to name it. It marks it as yours and even increases its power."

"Oh?" Now that was interesting. I could power my sword up by giving it a name? Time to think of one.

Hmm. Excalibur? No, to cliché. Elucidator? Nah, I don't wanna steal the name of another sword. This has to be original.

Man, naming a sword was harder than I thought.

My brow furrowed in frustration.

"Listen to the blade and chose a name that it sees fit," the mayor spoke calmly to me. I nodded and closed my eyes.

The world around me seemed to dissolve and I felt like I was alone, the warmth of my sword in my hand was the only thing I could focus on. That when it came to me.

"That's it! I got the name! Nyankunyaku!" My sword started vibrating violently. "W-what's going on?" I asked as my entire arm started to shake. I tried to let go of my sword but I couldn't.

The guard on my blade, which had been closed, opened with a tang. The guard spread out like black wings on a fallen angel and the vibrations soon stopped.

"You have given the blade the name that it sees fit," the mayor spoke as he put a hand to his chin. "Pfft! Nyankunyaku!"

"""PPFT!""" All three of my party members burst into laughter.

"Hey, don't laugh! It's not like I wanted it to choose a name that stupid!"

"You said it so confidently," the mayor laughed out as well. I could feel my face getting hot in embarrassment.

This world just wants to mock me!

The laughing continued for a while until they calmed down. As soon as they did a voice called out towards us.

"Here you go." The girl who lead us here approached me and handed me the 10,000 gold.

"Thanks," I said, handing Sora the money to hold on to.

"Uh-huh. By the way, my name's Patora Paladina," she smiled brightly at me, only increasing her beauty. My heart started racing. This wasn't good. Elves, animal girls, both were my weakness. And this world had them both!

"Oh," was all I seemed to be able to reply with. I still wasn't good at speaking to others, but I figured I'd tell her my name. "I'm Kichirou Saiyaku."

"W-well...Kichirou," she said my name more like a question, like it was difficult to say and she thought she got it wrong. "P-please, come visit again. I'd be glad to show you around the town." It must have been hard to try and force herself to speak to an awkward person like me. Why do I think this? Obvious, her face was red as she spoke, like it was a struggle just to get the words out.
