It's been week and still nothing from the school. Does that mean I failed? Did my acceptance letter get lost in the mail? "Aaagggghhh! This wait is killing me."
He stands up and goes to the kitchen. Due to his mom traveling abroad in college their house always has something that's not American. Like Japanese onigiri and sushi, or French crepes, or Italian Gelato. All made right there in the kitchen.
Opening the fridge door he finds some onigiri. It's one of his favorite snack foods. He sits down on the couch with his food and starts watching some TV. He flips through a few channels before stopping on one called NCIS. He was never really one for TV but his friends weren't online today so what else was he gonna do?
Before he knows it he ate the entire platter of onigiri. "Ahhhh...shit. Moms gonna kill me." Getting up to wash the platter the door to the house slams open. And Jason's mom comes sliding around the corner.
"Jason!" She gasps our "It's from the school." She holds out an envelope with the school crest. Jason takes it and holds it for a minute. "Well open the damn thing. Don't keep me waiting."
As he opens the envelope a little metal disc pops out and projects an image. An empty room greets him. Then a figure. And a voice. One he almost forgot. As the figure steps into the light he says "Son. I have to say that I'm proud of you. If you are seeing this message I guess I fell. You must be wondering why you're seeing me. Well I am or, was as it is, friends with the principal of Fort Lewis McCord High School. And I got him to promise me that if you ever took the hero course entrance exams and passed he'd send this instead of the normal one."
Jason and his mother are sobbing at this point. "I am proud to say that you are the newest student in class 1-A. Work hard, train harder, and make friends. I'm so proud of you my boy. In this recording I have a single thing I want you to do for me. Don't hold grudges. They will hold you back. I love you son. And you to Tanya. Tell Zip I thank him for helping you in my passing." And with that the video cuts out. Jason plays it three more times before he looks at his mom.
"Mom" his words are slurred "that was dad. "Did you know about this?" He's sitting on the floor "What did he mean Zip helped us. It's his fault dads dead."
"No it is not!" His mom shouts at him. "Your father died to that villain. And Zip lost his leg and his two best friends. Zip is part of the reason we can afford to live here. And you should really take your fathers request to heart."
"I-I'm sorry mom. I didn't know." He stands up and hugs her. "I love you mom."
With a shuddering breath she replies "It's ok son. I love you too. I can't be upset with you."
With a smirk he says "Oh that's good." He scratches the back of his head.
"What?" She looks cautious.
"I accidentally ate all the onigiri." He says. He looks up just in time to dodge his mom throwing mail at him. And he takes off running.
His mom grabs the nearest object, which just happens to be the onigiri platter "Get back here you little shit! I spent all last night making those damn things and you didn't save me any?" She has him cornered and is slapping him over and over with the platter. "Are you going to say you are all my gelato too?"
With a laugh Jason replies "Well now that you mention it....."
"AWWW YOU'VE DONE IT NOW!" She cuts him off
"Wait wait wait, I'm kidding mom." He holds his hands up in surrender. "I'll even help you make more onigiri."
With a huge grin she sets down the platter "Damn right you will. Little shit. And my gelato better be there."
"Mom." He pauses "In three months I get to start my dream of becoming a hero."
"And follow in your father footsteps."
They begin joking around and laughing as the prep the kitchen for the task that is preparing onigiri.
