"Be quick Kate! Jen will be here any minute." said Della in a large voice, "You also have to set the table." Della was a woman of about 45 with red skin and short blonde hair.
"Just a second mom, I just can't select what to wear." came a loud voice from upstairs.
"Mom… Dad…anyone…I'm home." entered a girl of about 20 with smooth chocolate colored hair and dark eyes.
"Welcome my dear welcome." embraced Della as she came out from the kitchen with a person cloth in her hand, "What a pleasing surprise this is?"
"You knew I was coming, how can it be a surprise Mom?" Jenifer cradled her mother.
"Because you always give surprises" smirked Della, "first tell me that how are you? How was your journey? Were there any problems on the way? Have you…" "Take a breath Mom" interrupted Jenifer, "I'm good as always and everything went great. Besides, I'm happy to be home, to be with you all."
"Hey Jen!" came a voice from the companionway, "It's been a long time I haven't teased you."
They both hugged. "You haven't changed a bit." giggled Jenifer.
"First tell me how my shirt is looking on me?" asked Kate.
"It suits you entirely." Jenifer looked around, "Where is Dalton?" asked Jenifer "can't hear him."
"He went to the doctor with your father" declared Della.
"Doctor..." Jenifer got stunned.
"It is just that lame kiddo stuff." uttered Kate.
"Kiddo stuff…is Dad okay?" Jenifer made a disgusting face.
"It's Dalton who is sick" howled Kate, "you think that Dad would do the kiddo stuff and all."
"Your brother has been having nightmares, and he's not acting normal." mentioned Della.
"What kind of nightmares?" inspected Jenifer?
"You know about kids of his age, they remain in their own world and start dreaming about things." confessed Della.
"Nightmares…" Jenifer got into deep thoughts as if she knew something about the dreams.
"Jen" Della grabbed her hand, "you look weary; go get yourself fresh until John and Dalton come back home."
"But I'm worried" mourned Jenifer.
"This happens with many kids of his age" told Della, "and these dreams are only his imaginations. That is all."
"You used to have these kinds of imaginations when you were a baby." teased Kate.
"Katy I've just arrived. Show some manners." chuckled Jenifer.
"Kate go set the table and Jenifer you go get yourself a nice bath." Uttered Della, "and don't worry about him. He will be alright."
"Mom I can't find the napery." cried Kate from the kitchen.
"Hold on I'm coming." Della went to help Kate.
Jenifer closed the front door. She went to the sitting room. She saw the TV, the sofa, the paintings. Then she went to the dinette and the kitchen. She seemed very happy but not satisfied with something. In every room she was going, she could see flashbacks of her memories.
Her vision got locked on the basement door. She was continually staring at it. That room used to be her biggest fear when she was little. She could see the door slowly opening. Her heart pounded hard in her chest as it opened more. She could see the darkness behind the door. Her fears started to overcome her. She stood still to the ground and could barely more. Suddenly, a yellow headed woman came out from the door. Jenifer screamed and so as that woman.
"Who are you?" posed Jenifer.
"You must be Jenifer. I am Samantha. Call me Sam. I came here to some extra stuff in the basement. There was no place in my house." smiled Samantha.
Jenifer was lost somewhere in her thoughts. "You can come visit my place. It's just a street ahead." Samantha grabbed her hand.
Jenifer came out from her thoughts, "Yeah sure!"
"You don't look fine dear."
"I am just so tired. I need to get a nap. I'll catch up with you later." uttering this Jenifer picked up her luggage and went upstairs to her room.
"My room!" she expressed. She twirled around her room, watched her dressing and kissed the mirror. She opened the window and let the fresh air come in. "I missed you! I missed everything!" she inhaled the beautiful air, dropped herself on the bed and tugged the pillow. "I should go get a bath first" she thought.
She got up. Opened her bag and hung her clothes. She took her towel, went to the bathroom, opened the warm water and relaxed in the fresh minty bubbles. "Nothing can be more relaxing!"
Although Jenifer was happy to come back home after a long time, there was something making her uncomfortable even in her joyful moment. Was it the basement room, which she feared since childhood or was it something else?
