Chapter 16 - The Day Before

Rain tapped rhythmically on the window pane in my living space. The day before our gala, I sat lost in thought.

How can I pull off attending such an event? Some Majors are invited but usually from the entertainment industry. While my nerves worked their way through my body, I realized I had a lot of work around my dwelling to accomplish.

Setting my cup of lukewarm java down, I got to work. I ordered groceries to be delivered. The kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom were cleaned. All scrubbed spotless. I wiped the back of my hand on my forehead. Sweat trickled down my cheek.

When I finished with the entire apartment, I entered the shower. As I lathered the shampoo in my hair, I thought of Adam's silver grey eyes. They were haunting yet I couldn't help but feel comfort. Who was he really? Why did he find me so interesting?

By the time I got out, the water was nearly cold. I dried my body then wrapped my hair in the towel. I grabbed the robe from the back of the door and stalked into the living space.

My communications device flickered blue. A sign there was a message.

I opened the door and saw my groceries waiting. Bringing them into my kitchen, I noticed the same blue flicker as I unloaded the last item into the refrigerator.

Hesitantly I pressed the blue button.

"Urgent Message: Report to the Lab at your earliest convenience."

Quickly, I dressed in appropriate work attire. I grabbed my work bag and sent a comm to the transport service.

Upon arrival I notice the halls are empty. No one appears to be working. It is a work break week, but I was surprised by the emptiness. An eerie hollow feeling engulfed me.

I entered the workspace I shared with Noah, and was surprised to find Adamanthe sitting at my desk. His eyes transfixed through the microscope.

"Adam?" I rasped and cleared my throat. "What is going on?"

He looked up a huge grin spread across his face.

"I have figured out the most extraordinary information about the parasite."

I cocked my head to the side, "And what might that be?"

"Are you sure you are ready for the truth?"
