Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Meetings and greetings

After a quick hug from uncle Felix, we collected my luggage and went to the black Lexus that was waiting for them outside. The school provided drivers and cars to any student or professor who needed to travel outside campus, although it was a bit of a challenge for students to get permission to leave.

The driver stepped out of the car to open the truck for them, he was a tall Asin-American, he looked to be around 21. On closer inspection, he seemed to have a very lean athletic build and a small scar going down his left forearm. 'Is he a vampire?' I can tell that he is not a pureblood like mom or uncle, but otherwise, I can't tell what kind of energy he is exuding. His face was too distracting to stare at for long, I soon found myself looking down and blushing. "I am Malcolm Edwards. I work at the school as a guard and driver." his voice was deep, and his tone was polite. When I looked up he had a friendly smile that was full of confidence.

"Does the school need much security? It's already in a remote location." I asked confused. 'What's the security for, bears?' My bags were placed in the truck and Malcolm was opening the back door for Uncle and me.

Malcolm remained silent and let Uncle Felix explain, "The guards help maintain order, and are useful whenever a vampire gets too hungry, among other things..." seeing my confused expression, he continued, "Your aware that vampires need a fairly frequent source of blood, right?" I nodded, "If a vampire overexerts themselves or goes too many days without consuming blood, they can become slightly crazed. Overconsumption of blood can also lead to something that is similar to being drunk. Whenever a vampire becomes a danger to themselves or others, the guard steps in and moves the vampire into isolation until they are stable again." This was all news to me. My mother drank blood with dinner every night like she was drinking a glass of red wine. I myself have only had a sip or two of blood since I have gotten older. The smell and taste of blood is sweet and extremely refreshing but I never felt a hunger for it. I looked at Malcolm with a renewed interest, the scar on his arm seems to look more ominous. 'How dangerous is my new school going to be?' Uncle Felix squeezed my hand and smiled to offer reassurance. "You will settle in just fine, and it's only for 2 years. Do you still want to study business in college?"

This question took me by surprise, no one has asked me about my future plans since my parents died. 'What does my future hold now? What do I want?' Seeing uncle grow more concerned with my lack of answer I responded, "Honestly, I don't know anything anymore…" Tears had already started to spill over onto my cheeks, the day my parents left started flashing into my mind.

Minutes passed by like this, the only sound was traffic as we left the small town. At a redlight a light blue piece of fabric suddenly entered my vision. Blinking to clear away tears, I realized Malcolm was reaching back to offer me a handkerchief. With a short nod of my thanks, I accepted it and began to dry my messy face. Looking up as I finished, I locked my eyes with his dark brown ones in the mirror. He held my gaze for a moment before giving a nod and focusing back on the road.
