Chapter 22 - Veiled Escapade

In their continuous surveillance, Ginger and Remi meticulously finalized their plan and made arrangements for their escape and return to their hometown. With their schedule set, they decided to extend their stay at the hotel, providing a fallback option if their escape didn't go as planned.

Ginger: (checking their supplies) "Everything is in order, Remi. We've come so far. Just a little longer and we'll be free from this nightmare."

Remi: (surveying the surroundings) "I can't wait to leave this place behind. But we have to stay focused. Our objective is within reach."

On the designated day, at 2 am, they prepared their rifles and packed their belongings. Despite it being their final day, they chose to remain at the hotel, ensuring they had a place to stay if their mission took an unexpected turn. The time had come to put their plan into action.

Ginger: (strapping on his weapon) "Remember, Remi, stay calm and trust in your skills. We've trained for this. We can't afford any mistakes."

Remi: (adjusting his scope) "I won't let anything jeopardize our mission. We're in this together, Ginger. Ready to take down Number 6 and expose Black Jack once and for all."

Confirming the target, Remi pulled the trigger, but to his surprise, he missed his shot. The bullet struck the window, causing a puff of fabric from Number 6's pillow. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Remi felt a mixture of confusion and concern.

Ginger: (whispering urgently) "Remi, what happened? We can't afford any slip-ups now!"

Remi: (gritting his teeth) "I don't understand. That shot should have been perfect. Something's not right. Stay alert, Ginger."

Ginger urgently asked for an update on the situation, but Remi was taken aback by his rare miss. Their predicament worsened when they made eye contact with Number 6, who seemed to have sensed their presence. In that tense moment, Remi regained his composure and prepared to take another shot. Ginger, however, pleaded for them to abort the mission as the room filled with bodyguards surrounding Number 6.

Ginger: (whispering urgently) "Remi, we need to retreat. We can't risk our lives further. We've wounded him, let's count our blessings and get out of here."

Remi: (determined) "No, Ginger. I can't let him escape. I need to finish what I started. Trust me, I've got this."

Despite the potential danger, Remi's determination was unwavering. He believed it was just a coincidence that Number 6 had noticed them and remained steadfast in his decision to take another shot. He repositioned himself and pulled the trigger once again, this time hitting Number 6's chest. A spray of blood confirmed the impact, but Remi realized he had come dangerously close to missing again.

Ginger: (alarmed) "Remi, that was too close! We need to go now! We've accomplished what we came here to do."

Remi: (resolute) "I can't let him get away, Ginger. This is our chance to end it. Trust me, I won't miss again."

Ginger panicked, aware that the second shot could draw further attention to their location. They swiftly gathered their belongings, intending to escape according to their plan. To their dismay, the designated pickup driver was nowhere to be found. Desperate, Ginger contacted the driver, who explained that he had abandoned the rendezvous due to the nearby shooting. Stuck in an unexpected situation, Ginger relayed the information to Remi.

Ginger: (frustrated) "Remi, the driver bailed on us. We're on our own. We need to think fast."

Remi: (determined) "No time to waste, Ginger. We'll have to improvise. Let's head to the airport on foot. We can't let them catch up to us."

Without hesitation, they made a split-second decision to head towards the airport on foot, despite the considerable distance. Taking narrow roads to conceal their escape, they knew it would prolong their journey. Their only hope was to outrun their pursuers, as taxis were scarce at 5 in the morning, especially after news of the shooting spread.

Ginger: (breathing heavily) "Keep going, Remi! We can't slow down now. Just a little farther!"

Remi: (pushing through fatigue) "Don't look back, Ginger. We're almost there. We can make it!"

Their adrenaline surged as they sprinted, but even their endurance had limits. Remi, having primarily served in reconnaissance during his military career, reached his breaking point first. They decided to take a brief rest, all while keeping an eye out for any available transportation.

Ginger: (catching his breath) "We've come so far, Remi. Just a little longer. We'll find a way to make it to the airport."

Remi: (wiping sweat from his brow) "We've faced tougher challenges before. We won't let exhaustion stop us now. Stay focused, Ginger."

Finally, they spotted the first taxi of the morning. Seizing the opportunity, they called the taxi over and took it as close to the airport as possible. They cherished the brief respite before their flight, knowing they had survived a perilous escape, but understanding that their mission was far from over.
