After reconciling, Ginger and Remi discussed their options. They assessed their current resources, including their finances and a place where they could lay low. They considered hiding in a nearby location, preferably close to the airport, even if it was a casual spot. They also contemplated using the harbor as an alternative route to leave the island. Lastly, they contemplated reaching out to Maya as their second-best option, despite Remi's lingering distrust.
Ginger: "So, we have a few options here. We could stay on the island for now, but that might prolong our exposure. Another idea is to find a hiding spot near the airport, maybe even on the harbor, and figure out a way to leave discreetly. And, as a last resort, we can reach out to Maya."
Remi: "I understand your concerns, but what if Maya has ulterior motives? We can't afford to put ourselves in more danger."
Ginger: "I get your skepticism, Remi, but we're running out of choices. Maya might be our best shot at getting out of here safely."
Remi: "I'm still skeptical about Maya, but I suppose we don't have many choices. Let's explore the harbor first. It's often less guarded, and we might be able to bring our firearms without much scrutiny."
With their plan in mind, they set out to search for the harbor. However, they soon discovered that it was also closed due to the ongoing incident. Left with no other immediate options, they decided to meet Maya again.
Ginger: "Remi, we've hit a dead end. The harbor is closed, and we don't have many options left. We might need to consider going back to Maya and see if she's still willing to help us."
Remi: "Alright, Ginger. Let's find Maya and hear what she has to say. But remember, we need to stay cautious."
Arriving at Maya's room, they patiently waited for her to finish a phone call. As she hung up, Maya looked at them with a mix of surprise and relief.
Maya: "I'm glad you're back. I was worried you wouldn't return after our previous encounter. I'm still willing to help you, despite the doubt and suspicion. I understand your concerns."
Remi: "Maya, we apologize for leaving abruptly before. It's just that trust is hard to come by in our line of work. Can you blame us for being cautious?"
Maya: "No, I can't blame you at all. Trust needs to be earned, especially in situations like these. But I assure you, my offer still stands. I want to help you."
But Remi couldn't help but question Maya's motives, unsure why she was so willing to help them despite their initial distrust.
Remi: "Why are you helping us anyway? The one we saved was Alex, not you. What's your stake in all of this?"
Maya's expression softened, understanding Remi's skepticism.
Maya: "I can see why you're worried. Let me explain. During the mall incident, I had asked Alex to accompany my daughter. Unfortunately, she ended up caught in the hostage situation. As a mother, I was deeply concerned for her safety. But then I heard about a young man who seemed out of place, who didn't flee like the others, but instead showed bravery amidst the chaos. That young man was you, Ginger."
Ginger looked surprised, not realizing he had caught Maya's attention during the incident.
Ginger: "Me? I didn't expect anyone to notice."
Maya: "When I found out it was you and that you had been injured in the process, I wanted to express my gratitude. But when I watched the news, there was no mention of you. I realized that you didn't seek fame or recognition; you simply wanted to bring peace to others. That's when I knew I had to help you."
Remi's suspicion began to fade as he saw the sincerity in Maya's eyes.
Remi: "Thank you for sharing that with us, Maya. It's clear that you understand our intentions and the risks we've taken. We appreciate your willingness to assist us. Given the circumstances, it seems we're left with no better choice than to accept your help."
Maya then proceeded to provide them with an unofficial means to leave the city, utilizing her connections and resources to arrange their departure. She informed them of a smaller, less-guarded airport on the outskirts of the city, where they could board a flight back to the mainland. What made this option even more appealing was the fact that they would be allowed to bring their firearms with them, ensuring their safety during the journey.
Ginger, looking outside at Maya as she waved them off, couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude towards her.
Ginger: "Maya, we owe you a great debt. Your help and generosity have been invaluable to us. If there's ever anything we can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. You've proven yourself to be a true friend."
Maya smiled warmly, appreciating Ginger's words.
Maya: "I'm glad I could be of assistance. Remember, true friends are there for each other in times of need. You've shown courage and integrity throughout this ordeal, and I have no doubt that you'll continue to make a positive impact wherever you go. Take care, Ginger."
Remi, nodding in agreement, expressed his gratitude as well.
Remi: "Thank you, Maya. Your kindness and support have meant a lot to us. We're truly grateful for your help, especially during such challenging circumstances. You've shown us that there are still good-hearted people out there willing to lend a hand. We won't forget it."
With their heartfelt words exchanged, Ginger and Remi boarded the small plane, their journey back home about to commence. As they settled into their seats, they glanced out the window one last time, seeing Maya waving goodbye. They knew that although their paths may diverge for now, the bond they had formed in the face of adversity would not be easily forgotten.
