Chapter 9 - Won the Lottery

Rose woke with a start the next day. She didn't even remember when she went to sleep, but she was sure that she had passed out on the couch. Feeling the leather underneath her, she was right in her assumption. Yet she didn't remember covering herself with a blanket or having grabbed a pillow from her room, but there they were, nice warm an comfortable under and around her.

A pleasant aroma of coffee aroused her from her sleepy state. She looked over to the dining room table and was surprised to see that the only thing that occupied it was a plate and cup of coffee. Rising from the couch, she saw Sam standing in the kitchen, two skillets on the stove, frying up bacon while another he was making an omelette. "You're awake." He said with a smile, not even having to turn towards her.

He brought the skillet with the omelette to the table and placed it on the plate, followed by a generous helping of bacon. "I hope you don't mind that I cooked." He poured a glass of orange juice and placed it on the table as well. "I wanted to show my appreciation for our new arrangement."

"I didn't know you knew how to cook." She said as she took a seat at the table. Taking a bite of the omelette, she tasted tomatoes, ham and chees in the one bite and closed her eyes, savoring it. "Cook well, I mean."

"I suppose it's muscle memory." Sam shrugged.

"Maybe you were a chef." She silently prayed that he was. If this was the first day of living together, she had won the lottery.

By the time her meal was finished, she took a sip of coffee. Somehow she was not surprised to find that even this was perfect. He had somehow guessed the right amount of sugar and creamer. Maybe he was a mind reader too?

When she moved to take the plate to the dish washer, he took it from her and placed it himself. He was already cleaning off the stove from the grease cooking bacon had left on its surface. The skillets were already out of sight, hand washed and placed back where they belonged. It was as if he were hosting her instead of the other way around. She said nothing, but silently she knew she could get used to this.

Going to her room, she got out her scrubs and under things and went to the bathroom. She was not even surprised to see that her used towels had been replaced with new ones from a cabinet. The old ones must be in the wash. She could hear the rythmic thumping of the dryer and wondered just how long Sam had been awake.

Taking a long shower, Rose basked in the heat that engulfed her. She allowed all of the spoiling to give her a few more minutes she wouldn't have had if Sam hadn't woken up first.

A knock came from the outside of the door. "I don't mean to intrude, but it is five thirty." Sam's voice called from the other side.

"Thanks for the warning." She said as she shut off the water. Drying off, she lathered herself with lotion and put on her scrubs. She was heading for the door before her hair dried.

"Have a good day at work." Sam smiled up at her while drying off the glass she had used for orange juice. Before she could walk out the door, he grabbed the keys from the counter. "Rose." He called out to her.

Before opening the door, she looked at him just in time to see her car keys land in her hand. He had tossed them from the other side, aiming perfectly to where her hand would be. She smiled. "Sometimes I forget my own head." She rolled her eyes as she opened the door and stepped out. "I'll see you tonight." She shut the door and went to her car.

When she opened it, her eyes went wide. Not only were all of the cups out of the car, but the bags she had in the back along with any other trash was no longer in sight. She was looking at her car as if for the first time when her parents brought it to her as a gift for graduating med school.
