Gary continued listening in to the conversation, he was too curious to stop now. Who was the woman? What did his dad mean?
"Well I am in your debt, if you ever need me or my son's help we'll be more than happy to oblige." His father continued.
"I believe personal issues are better solved in person than via another person, but if I find myself in a situation like yours I would come to you first." The woman responded, she sounded kind of judgemental- like she couldn't believe she'd done anything in the first place.
"Ah yes... I will talk to Gary some day..." came his father's voice, interrupting Gary's thoughts.
Personal issues? Talk to Gary? Money? Another mayor? A daughter doing the hard work?
Something stirred in his brain... it couldn't possibly be?
Then he heard another voice, a younger female's voice. He'd heard it before somewhere but he couldn't figure out where.
"Mum! Lucy is trying to eat the carpet again!"
Then he heard his father's voice in reply.
"Go, your family needs you... Mine does too..." His father finished the call and then Gary realised who's voice it was...
It was Ruby's voice.
