Chapter 3 - Chapter 2

The next day I woke up around 6:45 to hear my husband moving around and talking in the living room. I walk in to see him getting settled on the floor in front of the dog he found the day before. I assume it's a female by how she holds her tail in between her legs. I lean against the doorframe and watch as he slowly moves his hand towards the dog. The dog sniffs his hand and lets out a low grunt sound. He stayed still until the dog sniffs his hand again and then moved his hand to her head and gently laid his hand on her head. She stayed still, in a coward position, as if she would bite at the first wrong move he made. He slowly pet her head and moved down to her neck. He smiled to himself, clearly proud of the small trust he'd made with this dog. He pet all the way down her side before he got up and placed a bowl of water in front of her, which she gladly drank all of before falling asleep again. He walked towards me and greeted me with a good morning and a kiss. "Looks like she trusts you" I say, grinning. "Yeah, I suppose so" he replies.

We sit together for a few minutes, watching the dog. He makes egg sandwiches for breakfast and then we sit and eat while talking about our plans for today since neither of us have to go to work or school. He is going to take her to the vet later and I'm going to straighten up the house a bit. Then when he gets back we will both go to the store and get some supplies for the dog. As we clean up breakfast the dog wakes up and I offer her some egg and toast as a bribe for her to let me pet her. She takes the food but rejects me. I go and sit on the couch, not wanting to push her but still sad, wanting to give her love. My husband joins me on the couch, laughing quietly at me pouting since the dog doesn't like me yet. We talk about what to do with the dog. Even though she has rejected me, I'm attached and want to keep her. He can tell I want her. He said he would think about it. Even if he says no to keeping her, it'll happen. I can tell he wants to keep her too.

It comes around 12 and he decided it was time to take her to the vet since she seems to be up and about. He carefully wraps some cloth around her mouth and picks her up, carrying her to the car while I hold open the door. He sits her in the back seat and she lets out a soft grunt. He closes the door and I pull him into a hug. "Be safe" I tell him. All the time we get together, you'd think I would stop being so clingy and worrying so much. "I will" he says. I let go and he got into his car. He waves as he pulls away and I smile and wave back. I head inside and finish unpacking all the boxes we still had at the house. I finished the dishes we had not done earlier and decided to shower. Once I finish I put on some real clothes, remembering I have to go to the store later. I grab my book and go sit in my chair and read until he returns, sending an occasional text to him to check on him, trying not to blow his phone up. I end up only reading for about 30 minutes before I hear the rumble of his car pulling into the driveway. I come to the door, opening it to see him getting out of his vehicle. He shuts his door and walks to the back door, as I smile, knowing what he is grabbing. Our new dog.

He brought her in and laid her down in the middle of the floor. I decide to take another shot at petting her. She lifts her head and sniffs my hand. She licks my fingers and I start smiling. I look up to my husband, excited. He laughs at my excitement. I look away, slightly embarrassed but still happy to be able to pet the dog. I pet her head to tail while he and I talk about what we will need from the store and what we could call her. I washed my hands and he made sandwiches for lunch. We sat and talked for a while. We made a list and while I cleaned up from lunch, he attempted to take the dog outside so she wouldn't have an accident while we were gone. Once I was done, we got our warm clothes on and put on our thick shoes since winter was right around the corner. It had already been getting cold and trying to snow, but the ground wasn't quite cold enough for it to stick. We lock the door and head to the store.

Once we got to the store, we ended up getting dog food, dog bowls, a collar, a leash, dog soap, and some treats and toys. When we got home, I smiled as I walked in the door seeing the lump of fur we were about to turn back into a dog. But I frowned as I smelt what she left for us in the middle of the floor. I made my husband clean it while I put away all of the dog supplies we just bought. Once that was done, we gave her the best bath of her life. We used almost the entire bottle of soap to get all the dirt and grime off of her. For the first time, we could see the beautiful dog she was. A medium sized border collie with a fairly healthy coat. He was very underweight but clearly was happy with the attention she was getting. Once she was clean we dried her off and brought her back into the living room. He poured her some food and water into her new bowls and laid down an old blanket for her. She happily ate, starting to wag her tail for the first time with us. When she finished eating, she waddled over to me and my husband on the couch, I snapped the collar on her as she nervously shook and scratched at it before giving up. We decided to make dinner. We made pizza and dropped a few pepperoni down to our new family member closely watching us. After dinner and a movie we made our way to the bedroom, he took a shower while I changed into some pajamas. We put on a movie and cuddled, and he gave me a kiss on the head, just as I fell asleep in his arms.
