Chapter 46 - Chapter 46

Jeff was a gatekeeper for the capital city of Cardinal. His job was mostly just examining people who were entering and waving them through. Cardinal didn't have a gate toll because that was paid for in what king James called 'sales tax.'

It was almost ten at night when he saw what looked like three Inquisitors walking towards him.

"Hey, Fredrick?" He asked tentatively. "Do you think that those three look like Inquisitors?"

Fredrick looked over. "Well f**k my ass and call me Sally." He said. "They do seem to be Inquisitors."

"What do you think brought all these inquisitors?" Jeff asked Fredrick.

"I have no clue, but it can't be good." He replied gravely.

He watched them carefully as they made their way through the thouroughfare. They unerringly moved towards the gates, not changing pace nor adjusting direction. They walked perfectly in sync, unsettlingly so.

When they were close enough, Jeff saw two were female and one was male. The leftmose Inquisitor had a dark green tie and had a hand-and-a-half sword buckled to her waist. Based on the way she moved with it, she knew it well. The rightmost one had a complex-looking bow comfortably strung across her back.

The centermost Inquisitor was the one that made him the most nervous. He looked young, about sixteen, but it wasn't his age that unsettled Jeff. This inquisitor had no weapon on him. This meant one of two things. One, he was a summoning class, or two, he had transcended the need for external weapons and could use his body as a weapon. Both were equally stressing.

When they reached the gate, they stopped in unison and turned to him.

Cold sweat dripped down his spine. "H-hello Inquisitors." He began. "What brings you here?"

"Vacation." The centermost Inquisitor responded in a chilling tone.

"Well," He realized in his nervousness he had inquired about an Inquisitor's buisness, something that had cost others their lives. "Enjoy your stay."

Once they were gone, he released a sigh of relief and wiped his sweaty brow.

"You're lucky it wasn't official." Fredrick noted.

"Yeah." Jeff replied, deciding he needed to spend more time with his wife.

"I pity the innkeeper who has to deal with them." Fredrick said.

"I pity anyone who interacts with the middle one." Jeff responded, before turning to the tasks at hand and trying to forget his brush with death.
