Chapter 32 - Silent improvements

Bai Mei Li looked deeply at Xiao Jun. He was a intelligent child of course… but in the end he was still a child. It was up to her to think about the troubles their actions may bring.

She smiled at him. "I understand. You and I will talk about it okay?"

"Okay!" He said happily then looked back down to his book.

"That's settled so why don't you show me how to link the runes?"

"That's easy. All we have to do is intertwine a strand each of spiritual Qi. Once they are they linked we'll be able to send messages to one another from thousands of miles away. It's really easy, I'll show you." She said then showed her how to link the strands.

Bai Mei Li's spiritual Qi was very strong and flexible so it wasn't hard at all for her to maneuver it the way she wanted too.

She understood the concept behind it. The theory is that the energy produced by the spirit simply didn't follow the rules other things had too. It just wasn't bound by space. Rather it stretched or did something else no one was really sure. All that was known was that one could communicate over vast distances with a communication rune.

Bai Mei Li followed Chu Lin's instructions. Concentrating on her spirit energy, once she'd captured a small portion of it she condensed it into the form of a thread and attached one end to the runes core crystal and the other to Chu Ling's waiting soul thread.

Chu Ling had done this many times so she finished in about half the time it took for Bai Mei Li to finish hers.

"Excellent!" Chu Ling exclaimed excitedly. Her softly and silk like hair swaying gently across her face as she bounced a little in her happiness.

"Thanks for showing me how to do this."

"It's not a problem at all. It's always nice making new friends. I just have this feeling that we're going to get along really well. Come on Fei'er." Smiling she bent down and picked up the unhappy baby girl that was now struggling to be put back down. "I know you probably have other stuff that you need to do. Let's have lunch tomorrow if you don't have anything else to do.

"Fei'er can come back… we don't have anything to do." Xiao Jun said unhappily. It was clear that he didn't want Chu Fei to leave. His brows were furrowed and his little lips were slanted in a frown. He'd been having such a good time with Fei'er. Why did they have to leave so quickly?

"Jun'er is right. We don't have anything to do, please feel free to come by for lunch. I agree with you as well. It's always great making new friends. Jun'er and Fei'er seem to get along too." Bia Mei Li looked to Xiao Jun. She noticed his unhappy look and guessed that he was tired of playing by himself and wanted company, so although she'd planned on cultivating the entire day she decided to change her plans and let Fei'er come back.

Xiao Jun was such an obedient child. He didn't ask for much, so when it was clear that he wanted something she would go out of her way to make sure that he got it.

"It's a play date then. We'll see you tomorrow!" She kissed the crying Fei'ers chubby cheeks. "Now, now. We are coming back tomorrow be good." She smiled softly at the toddler and stroked her soft hair gently.

Bai Mei Li walked them to the door with Xiao Jun. He was still very unhappy even though he knew that they were coming back tomorrow afternoon.

"Be good my sweetie they are coming back tomorrow. That isn't very long to wait at all, you'll see." She patted his shoulder then walked away intending to go to her room to cultivate. She was going to try out the guest cultivation room but seeing how upset Xiao Jun she decided not to leave him on his own.

Xiao Jun watched his sister leave and go to her room. He understood that this meant that she was probably going to go cultivate so he shouldn't bother her right now. He knew from home that when people cultivated they needed quiet. His mother and elder brother had told him that he shouldn't ever interrupt a person that was cultivating because you could harm them if you did. That was why no matter how bored he got he never bothered his sister. He didn't want to hurt her.

He watched as she her door and then looked back to the front door with Fei'er and that other big sister had gone too. His little frown deepened once again.

He really missed that little sister he'd just found. He liked her. She was a lot of fun even though she couldn't talk. Just playing with her like they'd been doing was enough to bring him comfort. It was very similar to how mother and elder sister comforted him... but also different.

He sat back down on the floor where all his toys were still laid out. He moved them aside and picked up the picture books. He looked through them for a minute, picked one out, and then put the others away on the table. He settled against the thing his elder sister had called a 'couch' and started looking at the book.

His sister said that tomorrow would come soon. Since he trusted his sister he decided to just stop thinking about it.

The next day

Bai Mei Li opened her eyes to the sound of raining gently knocking on her window. The rhythmic sound was soothing and gradually brought her out of her cultivation state.

She blinked a few times and then jumped up in surprise. She instinctively knew how long she'd been cultivating, and she couldn't believe that she'd actually cultivated this long!

She ran out of the room and into the living room. Xiao Jun was on the floor playing with Fei'er and Chu Ling was in the kitchen cooking and singing. Bai Mei Li didn't recognize the song but felt that it was very pretty. Chu Ling had a beautiful voice.

"Sister!" Xiao Jun jumped up and immediately ran into her arms.

She picked him up and kissed him up with guilty kisses. She hadn't cooked anything after Chu Ling and And Fei'er had left. She'd still been cultivating this morning so he also hadn't had breakfast. She'd starved him!

"Jun'er are you okay." Her limpid and beautiful eyes looked down at his stomach.

"Mmhmm! Xiao Jun ate snacks!." He said happily in a sing song voice. He was very happy because Fei'er had come back like they had promised. He wasn't bothered by anything else. Although he hadn't expected for his sister to cultivate that long he hadn't thought about it that much. He liked eating with her, and he liked for her to feed him… but that didn't mean he didn't know how to feed himself. She'd given him plenty of food in his storage ring for emergencies so when she didn't come out when it was time to eat he just ate some of that. It wasn't a problem at all.

She looked at him for another minute and then smiled and kissed him again. She put him back down and let him run back over to Fei'er who was already trying to stumble walk over to where he was.

Bai Mei Li walked over to Chu Ling who was so busy cooking and singing that she hadn't even noticed that Bai Mei Li was already out of her room.

"Thanks for cooking lunch Chu Ling." She said, her tone pleasant and kind.

"It's not a problem. It's the least we can do since we keep barging in on you like this." She said after looking up and seeing Bai Mei Li. She was more than happy to cook for everyone. It was one of her favorite past times.

"What are you cooking?"

"I brought over some Miso balls. I though we could have that with some rice and sandwiches. What do you think? Too simple?"

"I think that's a great idea. How on earth did you find the ingredients for Miso?" She said with curiosity. Although things appeared similar here they were in fact very different. Herbs that looked the same as the ones on earth tasted very different here.

"It wasn't easy." Chu Ling laughed softly. "You can find the ingredients… its just a matter of being patient enough to find the herb that tastes like the ones on earth."

"Do you need some help?" Bai Mei Li nodded. That would indeed take quite a lot of patience.

"No I'm actually almost done. Take a seat it won't be long now."

She nodded but went into the kitchen and took out the plates that Chu Ling would need to put the food in. Then she started a pot for tea and took out the tea set and set tham out as well. Once she was finished with that she left the kitchen.

The space was not that big, and with her in there in didn't give Chu Ling much space to work in.

She pulled out a chair and sat down. She looked at Xiao Jun and Fei'er playing on the floor. They got along very well. She was really happy to see Xiao Jun socializing so well with other children despite everything that he'd gone through.

He really was an adaptable child.
