Chereads / The Moon’s Shadow / Chapter 14 - Lunch

Chapter 14 - Lunch

"Well, now we don't have to find lunch." Lyra laughed nervously and looked at the beast. "Lunch came to find us."

"Are you sure that it's edible?" Ace asked her. Beatrice was wondering the same thing. They had never eaten Demons before.

"Why wouldn't it be?" Lyra asked. She looked around the clearing to make sure it was still safe to remain there.

She hoped that no other demons heard the cry of the demon they killed. If they did, they would have to hurry and get away before a hoard of rampaging demons arrived.

However, if they cook the meat, then the remains of the demon would be gone and the other demons would not rampage.

Demons hate when one of their own is killed; that is why there has been this secret war between humans and demons that lasted for centuries.

There was currently a stalemate between the two sides, with both sides waiting for their new leaders to appear. The leader on the human side is the Hero, who in the past was Selena.

The leader of the demons, on the other hand, is the Queen of the Demons. No one knows her name, but she is by far more powerful than the Hero. She had the ability to control all demons, near or far, without even speaking a word. When she does so, it is as if they all possess a single conscious, as if they are one body.

In other words, it is always an extremely difficult task for the Hero to defeat the Queen of the Demons.

Lyra did not notice any demons nearby, so she said, "how about you two set up camp, and I'll cook?"

Beatrice and Ace also looked around and noticed that there were no demons. "But someone has to stand on guard." Ace said, disagreeing with Lyra's approach. Also he was unsure if there were any demons still nearby, so he wanted to be careful.

"I'll stand on guard." Beatrice said, looking directly at Ace. "You set up camp and Lyra will cook."

"Why do I have to set up camp? Why can't you do it?" Ace complained to Beatrice.

"I volunteered to guard, so naturally, you must set up the camp." Beatrice responded with a flat tone. She seemed to enjoy telling Ace what to do.

Ace reluctantly went into his suitcase and took out two tents. He set each one up carefully to make sure they don't move at all in the wind.

Lyra cooked the beast, and then they all ate together, Beatrice and Ace were surprised that they could taste spices.

"Did you pack spices in your suitcase?" Ace asked. It seemed like it would be very inconvenient for anyone to pack spices, especially when they had a very limited amount of space.

"Nope." Lyra responded. She did not go into more depth in her explanation, and left them hanging on why they taste spices.

She couldn't not tell them that demon beast meat always tasted like it had spices mixed in, right? She had to pretend like she never had demon beast meat before now.

"This is really delicious!" Ace said with his mouth full of food.

"Don't talk while you're eating!" Beatrice scolded him, although she was thinking the exact thing he was.

"Who knew that demon beast meat would be so tasty..." Beatrice mumbled under her breath before taking another bite.

Lyra sneezed after Beatrice said that. Ace looked at her and said, "You're not getting sick now, are you?"

Lyra responded, "I don't think so." Then she continued eating.

"That's good." Ace said, "it would be really bad if you got sick. It takes so much more work to tend someone who is sick when you are on a field trip."

Beatrice punched him on the leg.

"Ow! What was that for?" Ace asked and stared at Beatrice.

Beatrice simply flared at him and turned back to the food to continue eating.

Realizing that he was being ignored again, and that to Beatrice he seemed to be less important than food, Ace sighed and then tried to get more food, however, the plate was already empty.

"What? There's no more?" He said. He was disappointed. The food tasted really delicious and there was no more left for him to eat.

"The beast was huge, but all three of us managed to eat the whole beast." Lyra laughed. Beatrice couldn't help but join her laughing.

Ace's face flushed red. "Wh- What! The food was delicious! I want more!"

His expression, however, made Beatrice and Lyra laugh even more.

A few minutes later, they stopped laughing.

"What should we do now?" Lyra asked, looking towards both Beatrice and Ace. They should have been assigned to do something, right?

"We were assigned to find a specific herb. We should begin looking for it now." Beatrice said to answer Lyra's question.

Then suddenly they heard some leaves rustling in the background, but they felt no wind.

"There's another demon nearby..." Ace whispered, trying to make sure that the demon does not hear him.
