CHAPTER FIVE
"I have an announcement to make" Mrs Kingston said with the mic in her hands, while standing on the stage. All attention was drawn to her. Of course, it had to be so. She was the madam of the Kingston family, so everyone had to listen to her.
"You all know that this party is thrown for my son, Michael, who had
just stepped into adulthood. Today is
his eighteenth birthday, so I wish to announce that he would be going abroad to further his studies on business management after which he would be back to take over his father's company" she concluded. A round of applauds quickly followed, as she stepped down the stage.
Immediately after the announcement a soft music followed and guests went on with their conversations, people trying to get to know people. Some feasting to get their belly filled because that might probably be the last time they would taste something that good.
Desiree didn't know most of those
socialites who were of the same age as her. Michael and Nick were chatting away at a corner. She felt lonely, so she went to the corridor of the party hall.
As she stood there, she watched the stars and a smile appeared on her face.
"They are beautiful, aren't they?" she heard the one voice she could never forget in her entire life. She spun around and flashed a very charming smile at him.
"Hubby" she said and then made space for him to stand beside her.
"Yes they are beautiful" she answered.
Michael replied with a "hmmm"
Desi turned and looked at the stars again, and pointed towards one.
"You see that star" she asked
"The star that looks like it's separated from the others" she asked again.
Michael replied with a "yes, what is wrong with the star?" he asked.
"That is me" she said with a grin.
"I'm going to be just like that star, separated, distinguished and brightest." she declared.
"Hur Hur Hur" Michael laughed and said "I look forward to that".
"But hubby you are going abroad, make sure you don't forget me" she said.
"And how can I forget my little Aphrodite" he said as he bent down to touch her cheeks
"OK!"
The night was cold. Michael stared into the space. His mind went wild with a lot of thoughts. He would be leaving in a week. He was going to stay in the states for at least 10 years. This was so because, he wasn't just going there to study. He was also going there to establish a branch of their company there, to expand its roots.
Things were not going so smoothly in the Le grande family. Fred Le grande and his family were summoned by the Le grande elders.
Desi stood by the wall crying, as she watched her father being beaten by Grandpa Le grande. Her mother, Vanessa, wailed while watching her husbands skin peeling. Nick just stood by the entrance, watching the whole scene unfold, with his fist clenched.
Brandon and his family were just watching with face, full of smiles.
Brandon gazed at Fred and Nick, and smiled mischievously. Fred thought he would have have an edge over him by having a son? Humph! Now Daphne his daughter would have to take over the company.
Daphne smiled in her heart as she saw Desiree crying at the corner, but she mustn't show this, she had to remain the good girl.
After thirty minutes, the torture finally ended. Vanessa tended to her husbands wound immediately.
The old man Le grande, wouldn't give them enough chance for that.
"Now, get yourselves over here" Grandpa Legrand shouted at his children and grandchildren.
