There she was standing before me as I held her against the book shelves, before I could control it my hand reached for her wings still only a shadow of their true form, but still to touch them called to my very being.
Hearing her moan at my touch made my heart race I leaned in closer the need to mark her becoming more insistant. My mouth mere inches from her skin only seconds away from doing something I swore id never do as my fangs slowly emerged inside my mouth.
Suddenly her hand moves towards my wings instantly my mind becomes clear again, my fangs snap back into place, tensing I rip myself away roughly breaking the very intimate contact.
"this was a mistake, I've got to go."
Without another word I turned to leave avoiding any more contact as she attempts to reach for me. I quickly gather my things leaving the library and her behind.
What is happening to me? What is this female awakening within me? The frustration I felt brought out anger, anger at myself for not being able to control my actions and anger at her for causing my confusion.
Once through the door i glammered myself and took to the skies heading for god only knew where. Anywhere that put distance between me and her, the more distance the better. Seeing a cliff overlooking the ocean i landed still furious with myself.
What is wrong with me? If she hadn't snapped me out of it I would have marked her forever linking us together. I'll have to be more careful let Cam keep us close through Bree I cannot allow myself to be alone with her ever again.
"arghh!"
In my anger my wings glowed with power as I lash out at the rocks at my feet, they shake with the force of my power. Needing to release some tension I summon my swords and start a series of movements meant for training however they also worked to calm the soul.
Slowly with each swing of my sword my anger starts to recede and the glow in my wings start to dim. It was during this that Cam met me just as the sun started to set.
Glancing at the rocks I had destroyed Cam raises an eyebrow
"you alright bro?"
Finishing my last series of swings with my swords I answeared
"I am now."
Sweating and more relaxed I settled down swinging my legs over the cliffs edge, Cam sitting beside me.
"want to talk about it?"
"no!"
Cam sighed not pushing the issue knowing me well enough.
After a long time of just listening to the water hitting the rocks below I finally spoke
"there's something different about this fledgling."
"how so?"
"I don't know she's not a normal new angel there's just something about her things that shouldn't be possible."
"well she is female-"
I punched him in the arm smiling, my smile didn't last long
"it's more than that…it's"
My voice trailed off as I struggled to find the right words, Cam putting a hand on my shoulder spoke before I could
"she's your mate."
His words made me snap my head towards him
"impossible!"
I slight smile started to form on his lips
"you gotta face facts bro I can see it in the way you look at her and in the way she looks at you."
I shook off his hand.
"your mistaken."
"Dan-"
"No! You know our mission it can't happen and it won't you know what we must do."
"yea but if-"
"enough Cam! Just drop it I will do what has been ordered of me once her wings form she will die by my hands."
The concern in Cams eyes was the last thing I saw before i spread my wings headed for our apartment going straight to my room.
The next morning Cam and I headed towards the university, Cam staying more quiet than usual. All night, thoughts were in my head of her in that library up against the shelves her breathing heavy as my mouth inched towards her neck.
I shook my head trying to rid myself of the images, I must not let her get that close again.
"Morning you two how was your first day at uni?"
Pulled from my thoughts I looked up to see Bree and Reece standing before us, Bree was smiling from ear to ear at the sight of Cam. Reece however was avoiding looking our way, after what happened yesterday it wasn't surprising.
"Hey sexy, miss me last night."
Cam greeted Bree by planting a heated kiss on her lips. Sighing Reece started to turn away
"I'll see you at lunch Bree."
Before Bree could stop her I watched as Reece sped off towards the entrance.
"What's gotten into her all of a sudden?"
Bree wondered out loud, Cam looked to me with a questioning raise of his eyebrow.
I shrugged my shoulders refusing to reveal anything
"I'll see you two later."
As I walked away I heard Bree asking Cam
"did something happen between those two?"
Cam met my eyes briefly before answearing
"your guess is as good as mine sweetie."
Their voices trailed off as I entered the building, I sensed her aproach even before I saw her.
"Dantalis ?"
I remained silent as I stared into her eyes
"can we talk?"
just as I was about to answear Kail put his arms around her shoulders
"what's going on guys?"
I scowled
"nothing that concerns you."
Kail staring daggers right back answeared
"if it concerns Reece then it concerns me."
"argh will you two stop it!"
Both of us turned to her as she wriggled out from under kails arms
"I don't know what is going on between you and frankly I don't care but leave me out of it."
Taking my hand she turned to kail
"we have class I'll see you later."
Dispite the deal I made to myself to not be alone with Reece I couldn't help but smile at kails scowl as he watched us walk away, Reece still pulling me by the hand.
Once far enough away Reece stopped and turned to me hands going to her hips.
"care to explain yourself?"
I looked at her puzzled
"what do you mean?"
"don't play dumb Dantalis, what happened yesterday? What was that?"
I scowled
"nothing."
I made to move past her but she pulled me back with surprising strength. I stared at her hand then back to her eyes.
"it wasn't nothing and you know it, I don't quite understand it all myself but-"
I interrupted her before she could go any further
"look I don't know what you think happened between us but just know it wont happen again. Let's just put it down to a moment of weakness and leave it at that."
Again I tried to leave and again she pulled me back I could sense the fury welling inside her
"you are the most frustrating annoying and confusing person I have ever known, how about this you stay away from me and I'll stay away from you sound good."
With that she turned on her heel and left me standing there despite myself admiring the fire burning in her. My own ice melting just a little with the force of it, I shook my head no its better. I will not regret that this is the way it has to be.
True to her word Reece avoided me like the plague over the course of the next few days even when Cam and I sat with them at lunch since Bree couldn't stay away from Cam.
Which suited me fine my plan working perfectly since I could still keep an eye on Reece while keeping my distance at the same time. Bree noticed the rift between us but never questioned it remaining in grossed in Cam while Reece and I sat in silence, despite myself I couldn't help but steal glances at her every now and then only to be met with eyes that could tear into me at the slightest provocation.
Before I knew it, it was the weekend which meant the typical uni night life of drinking in the clubs, of corse Bree had invited Cam which meant I had to tag along aswell. Not looking forward to it I sat on the roof of our building staring out at the city at nothing in piticuliar just attempting to gather my thoughts. Or rid myself of thoughts that should not be in my head.
"come on bro you've been sulking for days lighten up try letting yourself go for once."
I ignored his remark not even looking his way as he sat down beside me.
"I've never seen you like this before, maybe we should give the mission to someone else."
"No!"
My answear was instant just the thought of another angel going anywhere near her had my wings glowing.
"I have never failed nor given up on a mission I will not start now."
"yea but if she's your mate."
"I told you before she is not."
I started to get up when Cam gripped my shoulder stopping me from taking flight.
"Dantalis do you fear the darkness that much?"
Not looking at him I answeared
"it's not the darkness I fear but what I'm forced to do when under its thrall."
With that I headed towards the club Cam not far behind as I prepared to meet up with the object of my torment.
The girls waited for us inside a club called tainted, I laughed inside at the irony of entering a club with the name that described my very being.
There were so many people we didn't see them at first but with my power I could find her anywhere. As the crowd parted my heart skipped a beat as my eyes beheld a vision of female sexuality as Reece moved to the beat of the music wearing a red low cut dress showing enough clevage to have an instant effect on any man that looked upon her, her hair a golden light tumbled down her back half up half down showing enough of her back as her wings sprouted from her shoulders they had started to look more solid as they drew closer to full power.
Not moving, I watched her swing her hips with Bree. Her movements stirring something deep inside me. Cam nudged me forcing me to supress the emotions welling inside.
Get a hold of your self Dantalis stick to the mission, I told myself as once again I steeled my resolve as I approached them. Like the first night Cam instantly took Bree in his arms as he swayed to the music with her.
I on the other hand headed towards the bar instead wanting I strong drink already sensing tonight was going to be tough. I watched as still Reece refused to look my way she had now taken up dancing with another girl since Bree was busy dancing with cam. Turning my back I could no longer watch as the very sight of her stirred me.
it wasn't long before I sensed her come closer then she seemed to hesitate turning she headed outside to one of the outside bars. I sighed might as well follow her, fighting my way through the crowd after what felt like hours I finaly reached the door she had exited.
Spotting her I realised she was surrounded by a group of guys that seemed to be herding her towards the side alley. Her eyes locked on mine fear evident in them just as one of them grabbed her by the arm.
Quick as a flash I ripped the guy holding her away as he flew across the room, power resignated in my wings as anger rose to the surface. One of the guys swung his fist in a punch, quicker than the eye could see his fist connected with my palm as I crushed his fist breaking more than one finger. He crumbled to the ground clutching his hand to his chest, the three remaining circled me as I pulled Reece behind me shielding her from harm.
"stay behind me."
All three lunged at once as I knocked one out with a punch to the jaw the second went down with a knee to his solar flexes gasping for air the third however was I bit more trained then the others dodging my second punch.
Sneering he spat
"hey mate wait your turn you can have her when we're done."
That's all it took, that one sentence was all it took for the darkness to seep into me
"no! not now!"
Behind me Reece's hand on my back was like fire on ice as the cold darkness seeped into my very bones
"Dantalis?"
I turned to her literial fire in my eyes as there always was when he took over the fear in her own eyes was enough to tell me that it was there.
"RUN!"
Was all I could manage before the darkness exploded forcing the guy back against the opposite wall broken and crumpled to the ground. Turning my attention back on Reece who was stunned unable to move under my gaze as I advanced towards her. Fighting I forced myself to the surface for one last time.
"I SAID RUNN!"
My voice had change this time taking on a darker tone unlike my own, the fire still burning in my eyes. Suddenly an arrow pierced my shoulder, spinning I turned on my assailant.
Cam stood before me another arrow notched in his bow Bree behind him taking in the scene with the same horror in her eyes as Reece.
"what the hell's happening?"
Bree's words brought my attention towards her, another arrow hit my other shoulder.
"shut up Bree! Stand back ill handle this."
I laughed the demon in full control now.
"handle me. You, will handle me. Ah but you are a mere speck compared to the power I posess. Do not throw your life away trying to save some one that cannot be saved young fledgling."
"whoever you are you will leave Dantalis alone he is stronger than you think I bet even now he is fighting you else you would have killed us all already."
"perheaps I enjoy playing with you"
"I think not,"
A small movement had me turning around as I grabbed Reece around the throat
"little ants are all you are to me you merely alive for my amusment, this one however."
With my mouth the demon laughed as he peered into Reece's eyes
"this one will become very powerful she will be very useful to me"
Through my eyes I could see the fear that was in Reece's eyes be replaced by defiance
"fight this Dantalis, I know you don't want to hurt me so I'm telling you to fight."
Upon hearing those words power seeped into me forceing control back i started with my hands releasing Reece as she fell back to the ground i stepped back trying to gain back control.
"no you are weak stop fighting it Dantalis you are mine to do with what I will."
Falling to my knees I battled for control. hands reached for me as if from the middle of a fog.
From the point of in pact light spread from her hands forcing the darkness back, those same hands found their way to cup my face. Opening my still firey eyes Reece stared into them. Time stood still as she inched closer her lips touched mine and in that moment the darkness was supressed into its cage once again. Just the taste of her lips on mine was enough to bring me back.
"will someone please tell me what the hell is going on?"
Bree's sudden outcry awoke Reece from what could only be described as some kind of spell, she quickly separated her lips from mine her hand covering her mouth.
"what was that?"
she asked staring into my eyes trying to find the answears to questions I couldn't even begin to try explain.
"not here come on before anyone else sees."
Turning to Cam I ordered
"come we need to leave. take them home I'll be there as soon as I fix this place."
Cam stepped forward grabbing Reece's hand even as she protested pulling them both towards the exit as I started to use my power to fix the damage that had been done then erased the memory of the thugs that had threatened Reece. My mind returned to what had happened, how did she do that? That light where did it come from? She shouldn't have any sort of power like that yet. There was something going on here, she was no ordinary fledgling.
I thought back to how Gabriel had reacted to our mission, could it be? I remembered the look in his eyes when micheal ordered her killed. In those eyes I saw fear, fear and the sadness that came from losing a loved one.
Suddenly it was like I light bulb turning on. No it couldn't be, but it was forbidden. it was the only explaination, her power her exceelerated progression. It was all because of him and because she was the product of an archangel. It even explained the rift between micheal and Gabriel.
Realising I still had two arrows embedded in my shoulders I quickly pulled them out then took off into the night after Cam and the others.
