Chapter 27 - 26 Engi: Testing

Engi was once again at the firing range. He had taken care of the small defects his rifle had displayed. Around him he could hear the familiar sound of guns firing. Oddly the sound had started to feel comforting to him, Just like the loud hum of the engine.

The targets began to appear before him, his shots hit their targets smoothly. His proficiency was only partly his own, Alexander correctly guided him to the right area for each shot. Minutes passed and the last target fell. He had successfully shot all 40 targets. If this had been a test he would have recieved a perfect score, and would have been crowned an expert at stationary targets.

Engi nodded to himself. before hitting a few buttons on the side of the lane. Stationary targets were one thing, but truly all that mattered was if he could hit a target in motion; An opponent was not likely to just stand still and let you shoot them.

The moving targets had several levels of difficulty, each level increased the speed of the targets. The highest level had them moving at speeds that could not be tracked by a normal human eye. The highest level was not something he could even hope to complete at this point in time. Even the easier levels would be a challenge he could not yet reach.

He selected the easiest level of moving targets. The targets moved at a speed that was trackable by the naked eye. With the assistance of Alexander the targets fell at a high speed. He still failed to miss a single shot. When the final target fell a grim smile appeared on his face. If this had been a real test he would be qualified to be called a sharpshooter. A title that signifies his proficiency in firearms had reached the standard level of an elite orc soldier.

This was of course all thanks to Alexander, without him it would not be possible to be this proficient so fast. Engi lifted his goggles to his forehead and pressed some buttons on the side of the lane. The lane once again entered into the stationary target mode.

Without the aid of Alexander he once again attempted the stationary test. His firing speed and accuracy took a huge hit without the aid of his AI, but the month of practice had shown massive results in his own capabilities. Targets were struck one after another, with only the occasional miss. When the final target fell he had scored 34/40. Four points above the minimum level for an orc soldier, and a target below an orc marksman. This was assuming he could reach the same level with moving targets. Which he knew he could not.

He attempted the moving target course, but the end result was a 20/40. He had missed half of his shots. If he had been human this would have been an acceptable amount to miss for moving targets, and his score with stationary targets would have made him one of the better gunman. But the orcs were a warrior race, They had high standards for their troops. As a mechanic he would be given some leeway, But his pride would not let him fall back on that.

After grumbling for a few moments a determined look crossed his face. They would arrive at the orc base in a week, by that time he would improve his skills enough to pass as an orc soldier. Only then would he recieve the kind of treatment he desired. Only then could he have a comprehensive education that not only concentrated on his mechanical abilities, but on his combat ability as well.

As for the combat simulator, he challenged himself every day for one match. Sometimes he would win, sometimes he would lose. The opponents he got each time would be random, and occasionally he would encounter an intelligent opponent. Unfortunately for them, they stood no chance against Alexander's computational ability. With the help of his AI he had already gained an outstanding record for a private.

He felt that he had reached a plateau, that he would not continue to improve unless he did so without the help of His AI. In testing and in combat as a mechanic he was not restricted from using his own creations, but the AI could only improve on the foundation he set for himself. Until he improved on his basics Alexander could not advance any further.

He sighed as he set down his rifle. The weapon was running perfectly, his testing of it was complete. He now had to focus on his mechanical work, this evening he would once again return to train more.
