Chapter 27 - The Ancient One

"Majestic?" The dragon roared. Everything stood still as the deafening roar carried inexhaustible power. Following the roar, the dragon began chuckling. Confusion struck the room, the uneasiness in the leviathans left John concerned. "Humans have always lacked intelligence, but at least you're able to speak." The dragon carried on. "What's the reason for this meeting?" John sneered. "I see manners haven't been instilled upon you." The dragon retorted. "That is for another time, the reason is quite simple. In all my time in this world, I've yet to know a human with a soul as complex as yours. I'd also like to hear the story behind that stone you're carrying." That's when John realized, he was alive because of his curiosity and nothing more. "I'd be happy to share the stories of my life, but is such an audience needed?" John responded respectively. "Before I can share, my body requires nourishment and healing of injuries." John continued. "Very well. You'll have this day for rest and nourishment. We will meet again after you rest." The dragon bellowed. The leviathans all tucked back into their tunnels, while the one next to me positioned herself behind John. "Fall back, little one." The leviathan chirped. John was exhausted being stuck in the high tension atmosphere for what felt like half a day. With a thud, John was right back where he started. "We have gathered water and food from the surroundings, thanks to the hole you left." The leviathan explained. "Where am I to rest?" John questioned. "Where you are, little one." Responded the creature.

There was water gathered in a quickly sculpted basin, and a fire with rabbit roasting above it. The smell struck John's nose and his stomach rumbled in response. "We will free your hands, little one. Make any attempts and all you'll have is a unwelcomed rest. You're not permitted to leave my back, say what you need and I'll move accordingly." The creature stated bluntly as the top of it's tail shot up shattering the unwanted bracelet as if it was thin ice. "Thanks." John replied rubbing his wrists. Pointing towards the basin, the scaly serpent slithered to place John in front of the basin. Using his hands as a makeshift cup, he began drinking. Thoughts of drugged or poison briefly crossed his mine but was quickly expelled. They had their chance, they wouldn't do it so cowardly. As the cold water hit John's raw and hoarse throat, the sensation overcame him. Water had never tasted better in his life. Gulping down handfuls at a time until there was less than half left, he motioned towards the rabbit that was now cooked to a dark golden brown. The fat melted making the rabbit glisten in the flickering lights of the flame. John gobbled down the rabbit as if manners were never taught to him. As he was finishing the last of the rabbit, he was caught off guard as a different leviathan snuck up to his injured leg. Jumping back in surprise, pain shot through his leg causing him to lose his balance and fell back on the leviathans back. "Rest easily, little one." Was all the voice said. Still alert, John lowered his leg back to where it was. The other leviathan presented a bottle to John from within its teeth. "Use the contents to clean the wound, little one." The creature persuaded. Filled with hesitation, John did as instructed. Removing any pebbles and grime from around the wound, John dumped the contents on his leg. A familiar bright light shined from the point of contact and his leg was like new. Disbelief stuck John. "Now rest." The voice chimed as she knew more questions were coming. John slumped back, his head full of questions and eerily quiet.

John was awakened by the movement of slithering beneath him. John had a brush of excitement, he knew where he was going. As taxing as it was to be near the jet-black dragon, it was exciting. Reserving his strength until he had to withstand that pressure again, he laid still, waiting. Once the familiar light began flooding the cave tunnel, he knew it was time. "John!" He heard through the mixture of anxiety and excitement. The voice was recognized immediately. "Ampol?" John questioned. "You pushed us into your subconscious while being so weakened. We didn't know if you'd ever hear us again." Ampol responded. "I'm sorry for that." John sincerely replied. "Is there anything that you and Doren missed since then?" John questioned. "Everything, John. I may have rose to the surface of your consciousness but Doren's been unresponsive. I was fully recovered and that was a taxing fight." Ampol continued. "Doren was covering you while you were passed out. I believe he was weakened drastically when you plunged him down." Ampol responded. John began meditating searching for Doren. The search was cut short by the now familiar roar. "You've had your rest, nourishment and injury treated. Now let us hear everything, human!" The dragon's piercing voice rang in John's head. John began from the beginning, showing his scarred chest where their souls fully merged. The onlooking eyes watching on in excitement of the stories this lowly human possessed. "And the soul memory you carry?" The dragon questioned pushing John through his journey quicker. John held the stone forward in his opened palm. "This." John started. Recalling the exhilarating and deadly battle with a worthy foe."Before this, I also want to hear your story." "Very well." The dragon replied.
