Chapter 33 - Recruitement

"Hulaif, why do you enjoy taking on her appearance?" Mia's question caught me off guard.

"It's not about enjoying it," I replied, "I only have her image in my collection."

Mia, in her diminutive spider form, paused for a moment before suggesting, "Perhaps you should consider capturing more people's images. It could be useful."

I contemplated her suggestion. "You might be right, Mia. But for now, my focus is on something different. I'm planning to join their army."

Mia's multiple eyes widened in surprise. "Joining their army? That's a bold move, Hulaif. What's your plan?"

I leaned in closer, lowering my voice. "I believe that the army department holds key information about this city, and it's the best way to get closer to the truth. Besides, it will provide us with the opportunity to gather intelligence from the inside."

Mia nodded thoughtfully. "I see your point. Just be exceedingly cautious, Hulaif. The army department doesn't have a reputation for being accommodating to outsiders. And if they were to uncover your true identity..."

I finished her sentence, my voice grim, "I'll make sure they never do," I assured her, my determination unwavering. "I have a few tricks up my sleeve, and with Sarin's forged identification, I should be able to blend in seamlessly."

"Very well," Mia conceded, her small form trembling with a sense of determination. "But remember, Hulaif, we're with you every step of the way. Just tell us what we should do."

I nodded in gratitude. "Thank you, Mia. Your support means everything."

"Before you go, may I suggest something?" Mia asked.

"Of course, Mia. What's on your mind?"

"Allow me to gather intel while you're conducting your infiltration," she proposed. "I can move about unnoticed, and my tiny size allows me access to places others might overlook."

"That's a brilliant idea, Mia," I commended her. "Please do so, and keep me informed of anything important."

"Consider it done," Mia replied with a confident tone. She then disappeared into the watch, leaving me to continue my journey towards the army department. As I navigated through the bustling streets of the city, an unshakable feeling settled in my chest. It was the sensation that our pursuit of the truth was on the verge of entering a new and perilous phase.

My path led me deeper into the heart of the city, where the buildings rose like colossal monoliths, casting long shadows that stretched across the bustling streets. People hurried about their business, their faces etched with the weariness of daily life in a place that held more secrets than it cared to reveal.

The army department loomed ahead, a massive structure with imposing gates that stood as a formidable barrier. Armed guards patrolled the entrance, their stern expressions a testament to the seriousness of their duty. I approached the entrance, my heart pounding in my chest.

As I neared the gates, a stern-looking guard blocked my path. "Halt! State your business."

"I'm here to enlist in the army," I replied, doing my best to project confidence.

The guard regarded me with a critical eye, as if searching for any sign of deceit. "Identification."

I handed over the forged identification that Sarin had prepared for me, trying to keep my anxiety hidden beneath a facade of calm. The guard inspected the documents, his gaze lingering for a moment longer than I was comfortable with. Finally, he nodded and handed them back to me.

"Proceed to the recruitment office," he instructed, stepping aside to allow me entry.

The officer's office was a dimly lit room filled with the musty scent of old paperwork. The walls were adorned with faded photographs of soldiers, their stern faces frozen in time. The officer himself sat behind a heavy wooden desk, stacks of forms and documents strewn haphazardly before him. His uniform was crisp and immaculate, a stark contrast to the disarray of his workspace.

When I entered, his sharp, piercing gaze locked onto me. His eyes, a deep shade of brown, seemed to bore into my very soul as he assessed me. It was as if he could see through any falsehood or pretense, making me acutely aware of the false identity I had assumed.

"Name?" he inquired, his voice firm and unwavering.

"Lera," I replied, choosing a name that was far from my true identity.

"Reason for enlistment?" His question hung in the air, demanding an answer that would determine my fate in this unfamiliar world.

"I wish to serve and protect this city," I replied, my voice steady as I carefully selected each word. It was a response that hinted at loyalty and a dedication to a cause, though it concealed the truth of my ultimate objective.

The officer continued to scrutinize me, his gaze unyielding. It felt like an eternity before he finally nodded, his expression giving nothing away. "Very well. You'll go through a series of tests and evaluations. If you pass, you'll be considered for enlistment. Follow the instructions of the recruitment officer."

With that, he returned to his paperwork, and I exited the office, feeling the weight of his scrutiny still lingering on me.

Following the officer's directions, I arrived at the training area. The training area was a confined space surrounded by tall concrete walls, buzzing with recruits of varying ages and backgrounds. Some were vigorously engaged in physical assessments, their efforts evident in their sweat and determination. Others marched in formation, responding to precise commands. Amid this organized chaos, each recruit had their own motivation, whether personal growth, duty to the city, or aspirations for a better life. As I entered this new chapter, I felt the weight of uncertainty and opportunity in the air, surrounded by the sounds of orders, equipment, and shared determination.

I observed the recruits engaged in practical training, focusing on honing their physical skills. For the time being, my task involved checking up my body, including Body Mass Index (BMI) and completing the written test. Passing these would provide a sense of relief since I had confidence in the practical examinations, thanks to my prior experience in Sigma.

I headed to the medical room for my physical examination. The line was long, filled with other recruits waiting for their turn. As I patiently waited, a tomboyish girl stormed out of the examination room, cursing loudly. Her fiery demeanor suggested that she might be trouble.

When it was finally my turn, I underwent the examination, relieved to find that Lizark's incredible skill in creating a human-like exterior had left no room for error. Everything checked out perfectly.

Before entering the test hall, a sudden incident caught me off guard. A girl rushed towards me, causing me to stumble and almost fall. Her impact felt like a car crash, but years of training prevented me from passing out. She quickly apologized, her voice trembling with nervousness.

"It's alright," I reassured her. "I understand the jitters that come with a test like this."

"Really? You're so understanding. Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Haili. Nice to meet you." She extended her hand.

"I'm Lera. Pleasure to meet you too. Let's give it our best shot," I said, eager to fit in.

"Absolutely! Let's do our best," Haili replied, her spirits lifted.

Together, we entered the examination hall. The test lasted about an hour and a half and surprisingly, the questions weren't overly challenging. It felt more like an engineering test than one for the army department. I began to wonder if I was in the right place.

After completing the test, an instructor directed us to change into our uniforms. I held the uniform in my hands, unsure where to go, when suddenly, Haili grabbed my arm and practically dragged me along.

"Come on, Lera, let's change into our uniforms together," she exclaimed, displaying a level of assertiveness and strength I hadn't expected. We made our way to the dressing room, ready to embrace this new chapter of our lives.

In the dressing room, recruits were hurriedly changing into their uniforms, filling the space with a bustling energy. I quickly slipped into the provided uniform, which surprisingly fit me perfectly. It seemed they had taken precise measurements. Also, I am a bit embarrassed when changing my cloth with a full of lady here.

Haili, who was changing beside me, spoke up with enthusiasm, "You know, Lera, you seem pretty calm about all this. Aren't you nervous at all?"

I gave her a reassuring smile. "Of course, I am. But sometimes, you have to face your fears and take that leap. It's the only way we grow." Actually, I am more nervous about this dressing room exposure towards me.

Haili nodded, seemingly comforted by my words. "You're right. Thanks, Lera."

As we finished changing, we joined the other recruits in the common area. It was clear that everyone was eager to prove themselves and embark on this journey together. The atmosphere was a mix of anticipation and anxiety, but also a shared sense of camaraderie.

A stern-looking officer entered the room, and a hush fell over the recruits. He introduced himself as Commander Kaez, our commanding officer during training.  Damn, why must he all of people. I hope he does not remember Laura face. I hope so.

"Welcome, recruits," Commander Kaez began. "Starting today, you are now a part of the Alpha Army, the shield of our kingdom. Our mission is to protect the realm and its citizens at all costs, defending against external threats, irregular forces, and foreign adversaries. Your journey begins with intensive training, molding you into elite soldiers. Always bear in mind that you represent the pinnacle of discipline, honor, and duty. As members of the Alpha Army, your commitment to excellence is non-negotiable. Be the best of the best. That's all from me."

Hope that he does not recognize me. "Let's go Lera. We starts our practical exam." Haili said to me.

With a sense of unease about being recognized, I nodded to Haili. "Right behind you."

As we ventured into the practical exam area, I couldn't help but wonder how well I'd perform in these trials. This was a new world, and I was in an unfamiliar role. My past experiences and abilities might not be enough to excel here. But I was determined to give it my all, for the sake of our mission and uncovering the secrets of this mysterious city.

The practical exams proved to be an intense combination of physical fitness assessments and combat drills. Our abilities were thoroughly tested, with a focus on endurance, agility, and combat proficiency.

Haili, in particular, stood out as an exceptional partner. Her remarkable strength and skill drew the attention of several instructors, who watched her performance closely. It was clear that she had a natural talent for the physical aspects of the training.

As the hours passed, sweat dripped down our foreheads, and fatigue began to set in. The training was grueling, pushing us to our limits. However, I drew strength from my previous experiences, particularly the rigorous training I had undergone with Sigma.

In the midst of the drills, I noticed Commander Kaez observing us. His gaze lingered on me for a moment, but he didn't seem to recognize me, which was a relief. I needed to maintain my cover at all costs.

After what felt like an eternity, the practical exams finally came to an end. As we made our way back to the barracks, there was a crucial filtration process to determine who had passed and who had not.

The tension in the air was palpable as we waited for the results. Some recruits chatted nervously, while others stared into the distance, lost in thought. We were all aware that these results would determine our future in the Alpha Army, and the weight of that knowledge hung heavy in the air.

As Instructor Khaina called out the names of those who had passed, my heart pounded in anticipation. But, I can hear she call so many people there. Haili and I exchanged hopeful glances, our eyes reflecting the shared dream of joining the Alpha Army, eager to hear our names called among the chosen few.

However, as the announcements continued, our names remained conspicuously absent, and a growing sense of unease began to creep in, like a shadow cast over our aspirations.

Then came the disheartening declaration, each word landing like a heavy blow. "To those whose names I have not called," Instructor Khaina began, her voice firm and resolute, "you have not met the rigorous standards required for the Alpha Army. We are seeking only the most exceptional, the most skilled, and the most dedicated individuals for our ranks."

A somber mood hung over us as Instructor Khaina indicated the exit behind us. "There is a way out for those not selected," she added, her words finalizing our rejection from the ranks of the Alpha Army. It was a stark reminder that not all dreams were easily attained, and sometimes the path to one's aspirations was paved with setbacks and challenges.

As we filed out of the training room, a chilling sound echoed through the corridor - the unmistakable report of gunshots. Panic surged through the ranks of those of us who hadn't passed the test, and a sense of dread settled in the pit of my stomach. The door we had just exited slammed shut, locking us out of the room where the ominous shots had rung out. What in the world was happening in there?

Unable to shake my unease, I turned to Haili, who was walking beside me. "Did you hear that, Haili?" I asked, my voice tense with apprehension.

She shook her head, her expression unfazed. "Didn't hear a thing," she replied, offering me a reassuring smile. But I could tell that her calm demeanor hid a deeper understanding of the situation.

Just as I was about to make a beeline for the exit, Haili grabbed my arm and pulled me into a nearby room. Inside, I found myself in the company of ten others who, like me, hadn't heard their names called during the announcement. Four men and six women including me.

Confusion swirled in my mind as I tried to piece together what was happening. "Haili, can you please tell me what's going on?" I implored.

Her eyes met mine, and she spoke in a hushed tone, revealing a shocking truth. "Don't worry, Lera. Those gunshots you heard earlier were the ones who didn't pass. You and I, we made it."

My heart still pounded from the shock of Haili's revelation. The realization that those gunshots had marked the grim end of the failed candidates sent shivers down my spine. It was a brutal and unceremonious way to cull the ranks, a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of this military academy.

As we stood there, Haili and I exchanged uncertain glances with the others who had also survived this grim selection process. We were now part of a small, unexpected cohort, left to wonder why we had been spared while others had met a different fate.

In that tense moment, Commander Kaez entered the room, a figure I had hoped not to encounter. His presence carried an air of authority that demanded attention.

Certainly, here's a more detailed and clearer version of the scene:

"Good day," Commander Kaez began, his voice firm and resolute. "I am Commander Kaez, and I will be overseeing your training. I understand that recent events might have left some of you bewildered. To clarify, Alpha prioritizes advancements in mechanical technologies. Our goal is to create soldiers unburdened by the fear of death, who will unwaveringly follow our orders. Those gunshots you heard earlier were used to extract the brains of the unsuccessful candidates. These brains will be implanted into combat robots, ensuring their continued service. Now, I will call out your names, and please raise your hand when I do."

1. Haili, possessing the strength of a monster.

2. Rey, a man with outstanding observation skills who can predict the future.

3. Grey, a man with a calm exterior but harboring a beastly inner strength.

4. Jeremiah, gifted with absolute speed.

5. Jaico, with exceptional swordsmanship.

6. Killac, renowned for his razor-sharp knife skills.

7. Barbar, a bit undisciplined but boasting the highest scores in the exam, mostly through destructive means.

8. Mirei, a person that can disguise into anyone perfectly.

9. Keina, a gadgeteer proficient in the use of gadgets and hacking.

10. Lera, a sniper with the ability to hit any target flawlessly.

Lera, do we have any prior acquaintance?" Commander Kaez inquired, to which I shook my head and replied, "No, sir. Today marks our first meeting, sir."

He continued, "This is the list of survivors. You all possess unique talents that have piqued Alpha's interest. You are destined to become special soldiers, leading our forces during crucial operations and wear the combat suit."

Before Commander Kaez could conclude, a voice filled with defiance cut through the tension. "Ah, boring!" It was a woman who appeared to have little regard for discipline.

Commander Kaez's response was swift and stern. "Excuse me, Miss Barbar, but I am speaking. I suggest you remain silent and listen."

The woman, undeterred, spat on the ground, her defiance palpable. It was clear that her rebellious nature was not easily subdued, and the atmosphere in the room crackled with tension.

Commander Kaez's patience was wearing thin, his voice turning colder as he addressed the defiant woman. "Miss Barbar, I assure you that insubordination will not be tolerated here. Alpha demands discipline and obedience from its soldiers."

Miss Barbar's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Well, Commander, I'm not so great at following orders. But if you want to make me into a 'special soldier,' go ahead and try. I dare you."

Commander Kaez's eyes narrowed as he assessed the unruly woman, Miss Barbar. "We shall see, Miss Barbar. I thought I would allow you all some rest, but I've had a change of heart. Let's proceed with your training immediately. Follow me."

His stern tone left no room for argument as he led us deeper into the training facility. The abrupt shift from the exam to rigorous training was disorienting, but there was no choice but to follow his lead. It seemed that rest would have to wait, and the challenges of Alpha's training were only just beginning.

Commander Kaez guided us into the training facility, and the abrupt shift from the examination to the rigorous training caught me off guard. There was scarcely any time for us to recuperate or adjust to the new environment.

The training itself was incredibly demanding, pushing us to our physical and mental limits. We endured an unending sequence of drills, exercises, and combat simulations. However, these combat simulations took place within a virtual reality (VR) world, rather than real-world scenarios.

Commander Kaez emphasized the significance of honing our unique abilities, as they would be integrated into cutting-edge combat suits. This training regimen was relentless, and it became evident that Alpha's expectations were exceedingly high. We had embarked on a challenging journey, one that would test not only our physical prowess but also our adaptability and mental resilience.

During my tenure within the Alpha Kingdom's military department, I delved deeper into the true nature of this formidable organization. While Mia's undercover missions provided significant intelligence, I also managed to uncover a substantial amount of information through my own efforts. Together, these insights helped unravel the layers of secrecy that enshrouded the Alpha Kingdom and its military operations.
