Chapter 36 - The Conflict Beneath The Tomb

In the dimly lit tomb, the air crackled with tension as Jariyah and I faced an unexpected adversary—Laura. Once an ally, she now stood as the final obstacle in our path, an enigmatic presence in the shadows.

"Laura, what's going on? Why are you here?" I demanded, my voice echoing through the ancient chamber.

Laura remained silent for a moment before responding emotionlessly, "The one who achieves the final path shall be deleted." It became apparent that she didn't recognize me.

"Miss Laura, we don't want to fight you. Please come to your senses," Jariyah pleaded, but her words fell on deaf ears.

"Who are you? My duty is to keep outsiders from entering here. Get out before it's too late..." Laura spoke with emotion, but her tone abruptly shifted. "Now, you all shall be deleted."

"But, Miss Laura..." I interrupted Jariyah.

"Jariyah, let me handle this. You find what's beneath this tomb," I advised, preparing to face the unsettling challenge that lay before me.

As Laura stood firm, a mysterious aura enveloped her, indicating that this confrontation would not be an ordinary one. The tomb seemed to respond to her presence, casting eerie shadows that danced on the ancient walls.

"Laura, we've been through a lot together before. There must be a reason for this," I implored, hoping to reach some semblance of reason within her.

She remained unyielding. "Understanding is irrelevant. The path must be preserved. Those who trespass must be purged."

Suddenly, without warning, Laura raised her hand, and the air crackled with energy. Arcane symbols materialized, encasing her in a shimmering barrier. In an instant, her appearance transformed as if she adorned a crystalline dress and crown. It's beautiful.

"Prepare yourself. This path ends here," she declared, her voice now carrying an unsettling mix of determination and detachment. The aura around her intensified, and the tomb seemed to respond to the heightened energy, casting surreal shadows that danced across the ancient walls.

With a swift movement, Laura conjured a bow that glowed with an ethereal light. The tomb's atmosphere grew more tense as she notched an otherworldly arrow, ready to unleash its mysterious power.

"Laura, we don't want to fight you," I pleaded again, hoping to break through whatever force had taken hold of her.

But she remained unresponsive, her eyes fixed on us with an eerie determination. The barrier around her pulsated with an otherworldly energy, and the symbols etched within seemed to come alive, resonating with power.

Jariyah, sensing the impending clash, readied herself for any sudden moves from Laura. The air crackled with anticipation, and the echoes of our footsteps reverberated through the tomb, creating an eerie symphony.

In that charged moment, it became clear that to progress, we had to confront not just the physical challenges of the tomb, but also the enigmatic and formidable opponent before us—Laura, now transformed into an otherworldly guardian.

"Laura, please! There has to be another way," I implored, taking a cautious step forward.

"You tread a forbidden path, and I am the guardian that bars your way," she replied, her voice echoing with an otherworldly resonance.

"But we're not your enemies. We're here to seal the tomb and stop the malevolence that has befallen the village," I reasoned, trying to appeal to Laura's dormant humanity.

Her response, however, was a swift release of the ethereal arrow, aimed directly at us. I managed to deflect it with a barrier of wind, using Hawk skill from his staff, but the force behind it was palpable.

"Laura, listen to reason!" I urged again, desperately trying to reach the person I once knew.

She remained stoic, her gaze unyielding. "Reason holds no sway in the face of destiny."

With those cryptic words, Laura summoned a barrage of arcane arrows, each strike calculated and precise. I backed up Jariyah using the wind barrier and I dodged and countered as best as I could. The arcane arrow hit me leaving me with a few minor injuries.

"Tch, I don't want to fight you, but it seems like you're leaving me no choice," I retorted, frustration evident in my voice.

"Hulaif, are you okay?" Jariyah shouted.

"Yes, I'm fine," I replied, my tone betraying a hint of anger.

As the second wave of attacks rained down, a surge of adrenaline propelled me into action. Mia materialized at my command. In the blink of an eye, I initiated the Chesscraft, by choosing the bishop mode. Mia transformed into a traditional bow.

I swiftly drew the ethereal string, and the arrows manifested in a blur of motion. Each arrow, imbued with Mia's unique web-like properties, left streaks of light in its wake. They sliced through the arcane onslaught, devouring the magical projectiles in a display of precise and calculated archery. As Mia passive is a gluttony, she can devoured every kind of projectile upon her.

Having unleashed a flurry of arrows at Laura, it became painfully evident that her armor was impervious, rendering my attacks futile. Recognizing the need for more formidable firepower, I turned to Mia for a solution.

As the last remnants of the arrows were absorbed, Mia communicated with an eager energy, "Hulaif, I sense power surging within me."

In response to this revelation, the bow emanated a dazzling light. Mia's essence underwent a magnificent transformation, entering the second phase of her Chesscraft. The simple bow metamorphosed into an intricate compound bow, radiating a brilliance that hinted at newfound strength and potential. The battlefield crackled with charged anticipation as Mia stood ready, her upgraded form promising a potent and transformative force against our formidable adversary.

Empowered by Mia's upgraded form, I took a deep breath, acknowledging the heightened energy coursing through both of us. Determined to pierce through Laura's defenses, I drew the newly evolved compound bow, feeling its enhanced capabilities in my grasp.

Laura, seemingly unimpressed, maintained her stoic demeanor. "Your feeble attempts won't alter the inevitable," she declared, conjuring another wave of arcane projectiles. Yet, this time, the arrows came swifter and with greater force.

However, Mia and I were ready. With precision and agility, I notched Mia's upgraded bow, each arrow charged with the transformative power she now possessed. Glancing at the scope embedded in the bow, it revealed Laura's vulnerability — her weakness lay in the crown. As I released the first arrow, a burst of energy accompanied its flight, creating a shockwave that disrupted the incoming projectiles.

The subsequent arrows followed suit, each one carrying Mia's newfound might. The air crackled with a symphony of magical energies as the arrows collided with Laura's barrier, causing ripples of distortion. The barrier started to break under the force of the arrows, leaving Laura stunned for a moment. Sensing her vulnerability, I seized the opportunity, firing the last arrow directly at her crown.

As the last arrow left the bow, Mia resonated with satisfaction. "Feel the strength we wield, Hulaif." I nodded in agreement. The arrow struck the crown, dislodging it from her head. Laura began to descend from the air, and in that critical moment, I moved swiftly to catch her. As I did, her crystallized attire started to dissipate, leaving her unconscious in my arms.

With Laura in my arms, unconscious and disarmed, the once hostile tomb seemed to ease its grip on us. The arcane energy that permeated the air began to wane, and the oppressive atmosphere lifted.

Jariyah approached cautiously, eyeing Laura with a mix of concern and confusion. "What happened? Is she... okay?"

"I think so. It seems like whatever influence controlled her has been subdued," I replied, gently placing Laura on the ground. "We should keep an eye on her. I don't know what forces are at play here."

As we observed Laura, her features softened. The intensity that had marked her face during the battle was replaced by an almost serene expression. It was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing the Laura we once knew.

"What do we do now?" Jariyah asked, her gaze shifting between Laura and me.

"We continue exploring. There's more to uncover in this tomb, and perhaps we'll find answers about why Laura was set as the guardian," I explained, my mind racing with questions.

As we ventured deeper into the tomb, navigating its intricate passages adorned with ancient symbols and mysterious carvings, the air thickened with a sense of history and enigma. The culmination of our journey led us to a chamber where a massive coffin lay. The atmosphere grew heavy, suggesting a profound power emanating from within. Before I could open the coffin, Mia, sensing the tension, voiced her concern.

"Hulaif, are you sure you want to open that thing?" Mia questioned.

"I want to stop this from the root," I affirmed. "Jariyah, please keep an eye on Laura. If anything happens, get out of here."

"Understood."

With resolve, I opened the coffin. A surge of potent energy erupted, freezing time around us. In that suspended moment, a deep, resonant voice echoed, "So, you are the one who awakened me, human. Having overcome the trial, I shall grant you any wish you desire."

"Who are you, and what are the consequences of making a wish?" I inquired, my senses on high alert.

The voice resonated, "I am the guardian spirit of this tomb, bound by ancient rites to offer a boon to those who pass its trials. As for the wish, it shall be granted within the bounds of my power, but heed this: every wish extracts a toll, and the greater the wish, the steeper the cost."

The tomb's guardian materialized into a spectral figure, its form shifting between ethereal and solid. It continued, "Speak your desire, and be mindful of the price you're willing to pay."

Contemplating the potential consequences, I weighed my options. "I wish to rid this land of the vengeful spirit, to restore balance and protect its people. What is the cost of such a wish?"

The guardian's gaze bore into my soul, assessing the sincerity of my plea. "For such a formidable wish, the price is steep. You shall bear a mark, an indelible symbol of the balance you seek to restore. Also, your memory will be lost."

Without hesitation, I rejected the terms. "Well, that toll doesn't quite benefit me. How about we engage in a game? If you win, I'll willingly give you my soul. However, if I win, you must be sealed within me, and the damage you've done will be reversed."

As my words hung in the air, the guardian chuckled. "Hahaha... interesting! It's been quite a while since someone dared to challenge me. Okay, it's a deal. What kind of game do you propose?"

"Let's play a game of chess," I proposed, knowing that this ancient guardian might appreciate the strategic depth of such a contest.

"Chess, you say? Very well, mortal. Prepare the board," the guardian agreed.

As the mystical chessboard materialized between us, the pieces took on a radiant glow. It was evident that this was no ordinary game. The guardian, displaying a curiosity that transcended its timeless existence, made the first move. The pieces moved with an otherworldly grace, and each decision carried a weight beyond the confines of the board.

The game unfolded, each move a dance between mortal and immortal intellect. The guardian revealed its mastery of the arcane, employing pieces that defied the conventional rules of chess. Yet, I countered with strategic prowess and adaptability. The balance tipped and swayed, the board a reflection of cosmic forces in conflict.

As the final moves approached, a palpable tension filled the tomb. The guardian, realizing the precariousness of its position, spoke, "Impressive, mortal. But the game is not over yet."

With the ensuing moves, the chessboard found a delicate balance, culminating in my victory as I cornered the guardian with a castle and king checkmate. True to its word, the guardian conceded defeat. "You have proven your worth in this contest. I shall follow your command. So, please elaborate it."

A solemn thought crossed my mind. "I wish for the restoration of this land, the undoing of the curses, and the liberation of its people from suffering. Additionally, you shall accompany me, for your formidable power is too perilous to be left unattended."

The guardian nodded, and with a profound incantation, the tomb resonated with power. Light enveloped the chamber, and as it subsided, the tomb transformed. The curses that gripped the land lifted, the echoes of suffering faded, and life began to stir once more.

"Your wish is granted, mortal. I shall now fulfill my part of the bargain," the guardian intoned.

As the guardian began to dissipate, a surge of energy enveloped me. Utilizing Katz's ability, I channeled the power to establish a seal, merging the guardian's essence with mine. The tomb, once a place of malevolence, transformed into a sanctuary exuding serene energy. The air, once heavy with curses, now carried the scent of life and renewal. The time has started to moved, I turned to Jariyah and Mia, who had been observing the proceedings.

"It's over. The tomb is cleansed, and the land shall know peace once more," I declared, a profound sense of accomplishment settling within me. Suddenly, the tomb vanished, and we found ourselves outside. It appeared that the tomb had dissipated upon sealing the guardian spirit.

Jariyah approached me, gratitude evident in her eyes. "You've truly saved us, Hulaif. We are forever in your debt."

"I sought no award; I merely aimed for peace in your village. That's all I desire. Now, with daylight gracing us, let's return to the village," I suggested, carrying the unconscious Laura on my back.

Shortly after, we made our way back to the village. The villagers expressed their thanks, and I arranged for someone to attend to Laura's needs. Realizing my limited time, I decided to leave a message for her.

"I need to go somewhere," I explained to Jariyah. "Could you deliver this message to Laura when she wakes up?"

"Of course, you can count on me," Jariyah assured, ready to play her part in the unfolding tale.

"Thanks for that. Also, ensure that your friend Sett doesn't cause any trouble, understand?" I advised her.

"Noted," Jariyah replied, acknowledging the responsibility.

With that concluded, I left the village. Meanwhile, Lizark contacted me. "Buddy, I found them. About four of them were here, but I cannot find another one. You can trace my location." Lizark provided me with his coordinates.
