As the group trudged forward, weighed by fatigue and fear, we arrived at a point where the ceiling rose up. There was a wall preventing us from going any further. At the top was an opening that shone with light.
"Pylon, you're up."
I saw the fey that helped me up earlier move forward.
He smirked and gathered dust in his four arms. Suddenly he made a throwing motion at certain parts of the wall. The dust turned into spikes in mid-air and impaled the wall with astonishing speed, leaving four rods of metal sticking out from the wall.
He repeated this until he had made a staircase of rods leading up to the exit.
The leader spoke up again and started to direct the escapees.
"Alright, everyone line up! Only one at a time! Single file! No shoving!"
The crowd of nervous fey slowly climbed the staircase went through the opening.
I was still towards the back of the line so I had some time.
I tried looking at the other fey as I waited. Looking at all their different appearances and wondering what was life like for them.
'Are the ones that resemble the monarch butterfly nomadic?'
'Do the amphibious parts affect how they raise their kids?
'Oh...'
'I just remembered black widows...'
...
...
...
'...Maybe I can find a library later?'
It was my turn when I suddenly realized something.
Not all of the fey had wings. But why didn't any of the ones that did, fly?
I could understand myself because of whatever stuff is on them, but their wings are fine.
"Hey hurry up."
The leader of the rescue team said, startling me back to reality.
I hurriedly climbed the stairs with my head down and stepped through the opening. I was focusing on the steps so I didn't see what was inside until I lifted my head.
It was not what I expected.
I had expected more tunnels, an exit, maybe a base to rest at. But not this.
I lifted my head and squinted in the bright light. It didn't do my headache any favors.
Once my eyes adjusted I saw something unbelievable.
I saw a number of ramps, elevators, and stairs spiraling in dizzying combinations leading towards various tunnels. I saw fey of all ages walking, talking, and playing. I saw a magnificent palace that towered over the city. It was another shelter.
And it was right next to the giants that captured me.
