Chapter 18 - 17 the Unholy Trio

They had successfully gained a guide, though admittedly a rather annoying one. The three pug heads sounded like they were perpetually snoring with the way that they breathed. (Seriously though. If you have never heard a pug breathe go find one. Its rather distinct). That mixed with the constant chatter of Burr it was enough to make a man realize why cat people existed. Beka however was rather excited to have a little furry companion, and was rather enjoying talking with it.

"How long have you been here Burr?"

"What's it like to always be on all fours?"

"Are any of your brothers gay?"

Cyan eventually turned the two out, the conversation was annoying and he simply wanted to get this quest over. Some of the excitement from earlier had began to fade, and he was feeling slightly tired. He yawned as he began to walk towards the entrance to the dungeon. The two pug heads barked suddenly at him, while Butt yelled at him. "Don't go now! The dungeon is so much worse at night! The undead get more active, more bloodthirsty. Recently no one who enters at night survives. It is much safer to go in the morning."

Cyan rolled his eyes "so what do you expect us to do? Just camp out here for the night? Nothing like taking a nap in a graveyard during the full moon."

The three heads nodded as they listened to him speak. "I have a house here, after all someone is always here to keep watch over the dungeon. Stay the night there. You look exhausted, we will set off in the morning. "

"If the place is most dangerous at night then that is when we should explore. Though I do agree we should do this on a fresh mind. This will most likely not be a one and done thing. It will likely take several days of investigation to find anything useful"

The trio walked a short distance away, and arrived at an old church style building. They noticed that someone had burned a hole through the door, just big enough for the brothers to fit through. Inside the church looked like what you would expect from a small church. There was several benches lined up before reaching a raised platform with a podium.

An open book laid on the podium, and Cyan could not help but wonder what the church had been preaching. The book was titled the Divine Trinity, and had a picture of three figures in robes. Behind them a field of infinite darkness.

Their struggle was our salvation, as they began the parents of our different races. The first was a skeletal building, his flesh completely gone through the years of darkness. His had long since forgotten his name, but from him rose all of the skeletal creatures. His necromancy handed down through the years, giving birth to the skeletal race. They are tireless beings, who are slower and weaker than their human counter parts, but excel in magic and archery.

The second of the three was the mother of ghouls. She was a rare beauty in life, and this followed her into death. The ghouls can appear as any race, human, beast man, or beast, but they all have one thing in common. They need to eat the flesh of their counterparts to survive. A massive amount to keep their living appearances. These ghouls have the ability to regenerate, so long as they have enough to eat, and their strength is immense. However they are slow, and not as intelligent as their skeletal counterparts.>

The pages for the third of the trinity had been ripped out, leaving Cyan no clue as to what they could possibly be. He was curious about the book however and asked for permission to keep it. Burr quickly agreed as it was not something he had any use for, and a happy Cyan was far more likely to allow him to accompany them.

Burr escorted them through a door on the side of the platform, through it was two rooms. The first was a reading room of sorts. Several different books lined the walls on the shelves, there was a couch, a chair and a small coffee table in the middle. Through the other door was a bedroom, to one side of it was a kitchen, though it had not seen any use in who knows how long, and then other side a bathroom, which again was simply collecting dust.

Cyan placed his book on the coffee table as he sat on the couch. He looked at the pug brothers who had jumped onto the chair. "Tell me about the dungeon" he spoke to the pug.

"The dungeon has 4 floors. The first floor is filled with skeletons. The used to act alone, but they now travel. In groups. As you have read they are extremely skilled in range combat, but lacking in melee. If you can get close than the battle will be easy."

"The second floor is likewise filled with skeletons, with a few ghouls mixed in, the fighting is harder as the ghouls act as tanks for the skeletons. They will block your advance as the skeletons rain magic and bone arrows down on you. "

"The third floor is far more intense than the others. It is likewise a mixture of skeletons and ghouls, but there are far more ghouls than there were on the second floor. The undead are stronger. The first and second floor are mainly archers with a few mages, but the third floor is the reverse, mainly mages. Their magic is very powerful. This is the floor that his killed enforced the parties to retreat."

"The fourth floor is the boss floor. I have no information on this floor as the boss changes when it is defeated. "

"So wouldn't clearing the dungeon just make the monsters disappear? Why do they keep coming back?" - Cyan

The three pug heads shook their heads vigorously. "You know nothing, dungeons are a special area, outside of the control of even the dragons. They existed before the dragons did, and the mystery of their existence is still unknown, despite all of the experts that have tried to uncover it. The creatures in a dungeon will respawn at night. No one knows where they come from, and the creatures that are summoned are not always the same. For example what I told you about this dungeon is the usual spawning rate. But when we go in it could be completely different."

Cyan nodded, he had expected as much. After all Anna had told him that the dungeons were like a game.

"So why hasn't the guild sent a high level party to simply clear the dungeon and investigate?"

"It doesn't work like that. Dungeons limit the entrance to people by their levels. Even if a high level party tried to enter they would not be able to. The level limit for this dungeon is level 5. This is why they had no problem quarantining it, the loss of profit is small. "

Cyan nodded "I think that is all the questions I have, where do you want us to sleep? We should rest before setting off in the morning."

"You guys can take the bedroom. We will sleep on the couch."

Halfway through the night Cyan felt a small body curl up by his feet. He smiled, it reminded him of his days back on earth, when his dog would do the same.
