"You want us to kill the Zombies?" Telos asked shocked.
I looked at my grandson seriously, "No… Let's have breakfast first."
I laughed as I went to the kitchen.
I took out coffee and my mug. Put two full spoons of coffee inside. Put some water inside the kettle and turned it on.
One might think I was being casual but I was testing things at the same time. I wanted to know if the water and electricity were still working. Which I just confirmed that they do. I usually don't spend the energy from my solar panels and just have them active on the battery.
I saw the family coming down the stairs after they had calmed down. I made each of them tea or coffee depending on what they drink.
I made them some sandwiches. Everyone sat down rather quietly, usually we would chit chat about about something.
"What's going to happen now?" Sunlight asked as she gazed into the distance.
"I have no idea." I said with a smile.
"Until the virus is under control, or all the Deviants are killed, it's impossible for humanity to be back to the way they were. The Army is probably currently in chaos depending on how many of them turned in to Deviants. Whether the president and how many of the leaders had turned into Deviants etc. There were an infinite amount of possibilities.
First of all the Army is going to have to get control over the Electricity and the existing nuclear factories. Otherwise, there will be a nuclear meltdown around the world. Afterwards, they will have to start clearing hospitals and putting rams on the roads etc. That was all depending on what's going to happen.
All I can say right now is that we need to get one of those Deviants tested. We need to kill one and carefully dissect it. See if there is anything special about them." I said briefly. Well, I say briefly but I managed to finish my sandwich during that time.
Sunlight gasped at the part where I said we have to dissect one.
"Why do you want to dissect a zombie are you crazy?" She gasped.
I chuckled, "Of course it sounds crazy, but we don't know the type of Apocalypse it is yet. From the behaviour the zombies expressed they are not just walking dead. They are clearly a lot more powerful and smarter than normal zombies. They seemed to be evolved, bloodthirsty and less intelligent humans.
Another sign is that we have gotten stronger. Me especially. What reason is that for? We need a clear answer. Had the animals changed? Did plants change? how did the climate change if it did etc.
Any of this information could help us live longer." I calmly explained to my daughter.
All of them thought about it deeply and sighed in defeat. They couldn't help but agree. Although they still just wanted to stay inside.
"Remember the zombie outside? Let's go hunt it." I said passionately. I wanted to know exactly what kind of beings they were. I felt full of energy as if I was back to being young. That stuff that the Apocalypse gave was really good, I felt invigorated.
Everyone looked at me like I was crazy again. I stroked my beard.
"If you are not going to help me, then I'll go alone." I said confidently. I didn't do all these preparations for nothing after all!
"Grandpa you are crazy, you can't go!" Archi shouted with wide eyes.
"Dad, calm down. Let's just wait for the army to come. We have plenty of food here." Sunlight tried to persuade me.
"There are too many factors we have to check. Also, it won't be long before looters are going to show up. It's a fight between them and the Army. We definitely don't know which one is going to show up first." I said as I was already putting on my helmet.
Jason looked at me seriously, "I am also worried about my family. It seems that the connection on our phones had died. I can't contact anyone or access the internet."
I sighed, there was nothing I could do to help his family. They lived quite far away almost two hours drive with a car.
"For now, we just have to hope that they have enough supplies and can survive for now. We will go to scout around, but I have one bad thing to say.
The Apocalypse happened during the rush hour. This is when most people are outside their homes. Not to mention the traffic. The roads will most definitely be packed." I tried to console Jason. I knew that he was worried about his own parents.
Jason nodded, "I will go outside with you." He said it firmly. I was surprised by his courage, after all, he wasn't my offspring and he wasn't raised by me.
"Jason!" Sunlight shouted and looked worried at Jason.
"Don't worry we will just go around and check how things are." Jason said to Sunlight with a calm smile. He bent down and kissed her on the forehead.
Sunlight looked at him with red eyes.
"Okay, I am going as well." Sunlight said and stood up.
"hahaha! Good, good the more of us the higher chance to survive!" I said enthusiastically.
"Me too."
"I too will come."
Archi and Telos my grandchildren said as I looked at them surprised. My grandchildren are seriously mature. I wasn't strict with them for nothing.
"NO! You two are staying inside!" Sunlight glared at them.
I almost choked when my daughter said that.
"Are you crazy? They are literally stronger than you in every way and they are not 10 years old. They can make a decision for themselves. Might as well you stay and let them come with me." I complained to my daughter. She was so unreliable. Both of my grandkids were athletes that were good at sports. Telos was even Kendo National Champion. What was she saying? Even I would feel safe if my grandkids helped me. I am already old after all and I didn't spend all this energy on raising them for nothing. They should get themselves useful.
After a lot of arguing back and forth, my daughter finally gave in as she agreed to them coming.
All of us got equipped. we had a crossbow in our hands and a bag of bolts on the right side of the belt. A baseball bat or a sword on the left, and a spear on the back. We were equipped to the brim. The only thing we were lacking is more protective gear, but that couldn't be helped.
I went at the front while Jason and Sunlight behind me, and the kids at the back. It was a small convenient formation.
We went outside of the house to the front yard. I looked at the cemented fence. To the left, there was a gate for the car to go out from the garage and to the right, there was a small metal gate enough for one person to walk through. Between the two gates, there was a cement wall. My house was quite big with three floors, a garage and a front and back yard.
Before going off the property I told my family to wait while I looked around.
I slowly walked closer to the fence and looked at the deviant that sat on the ground. The car crash was right in front of my house after all. The deviant was laying on the ground next to the half-eaten corpse. It seemed like it just chopped off most of the persons' flesh, but didn't eat the bones.
The sight and smell of it made me nauseous but I knew I had to get used to it.
The Aberrant was sleeping soundly as if it didn't have a care in the world. I observed every part of its body studying the creature in detail. It had lost all its hair and had muscle like bumps all over its body. Big stomach, a broken leg and arm, but the broken arm and a leg had become weapons in itself.
There was no way it was a creature like a zombie. I don't think zombies can sleep in the first place.
I slowly walked to Jason and others. I waved my hand to walk behind the house. Where I discussed the strategy of killing the deviant.
First of all, there were five of us, but only one zombie. We shouldn't have a problem handling it. This means we should first be able to test its weaknesses.
We slowly walked back to the front of the house and stood horizontally behind the fence. We targeted the zombie with our crossbows.
First I had to test, what actually kills the zombie. I targeted the heart of the zombie with my crossbow.
Thud
The bolt pierced the zombie hitting the car door. The arrow should've hit the zombie right in the heart or at least that's where the heart usually was for normal people.
The Aberrant' eyes shot open as it shot from sitting position straight to standing. It didn't die at all!
The other four were a bit shocked by what just happened. Sunlight took a step back.
I immediately loudly commanded, "Shoot the head!"
Luckily they were already prepared just a bit shuck, so my voice gave them courage as they immediately released the bolts from their crossbows. Their aim shouldn't be as good as mine, but the crossbow is relatively easy to use and the range was barely 5 meters.
One arrow missed but the other three hit. One went through the mouth of the monster, one straight in its forehead and another one through its right eye. The zombies head knocked back as it knocked back hitting the car behind it.
It didn't move. I think it died.
Or so I thought
The next moment the guy's headshot back straight up as if nothing happened.
"WHAT KIND OF VITALITY IS THAT?" I couldn't help but shout.
Right away the Aberrant rushed towards us wanting to grab me with its arms in the grabbing position.
All of us took a couple of steps back, Archi accidentally fell on the grass.
I needed to calm down. The Aberrant knocked against the cement fence as it was not able to move forward. With its hands trying to reach us. As I saw this I didn't hesitate. I took my sword as I took a step forward and to the side. I swung my sword as if I was about to chop wood. I cut off the deviants hands from elbows forwards or well I tried to, but they only got cut halfway as they started dangling on the remaining piece of flesh. Greenish red liquid came out.
I observed for a second as the Deviant let out strange sounds as if it was angry. I was about to swing with my sword towards the head of the Deviant, but it suddenly bent down and jumped!
The fucker could jump! And it flew almost two meters in the air and was about to jump on top of me. I froze shocked for a moment as I couldn't move.
But then from my right, Telos rushed out, with a spear in his hands. He stabbed the bastard in its stomach and pushed him back. He then let go of his spear and the Deviant dropped on the ground behind the fence with the spear stabbed in its stomach.
I couldn't let the zombie recover. I jumped up stepping on the fence and jumped to the right of the zombie. The fucker was already getting up! How tenacious! I couldn't believe it. This time I had the time as I slashed with my sword towards its neck. It only cut halfway!
I pulled my sword back as it dragged the zombie towards me. The sword was half stuck, but it came out a moment later. I backed away as the zombie pathetically crawled towards me on its side.
Bang
Jason ran out with his sword as he slashed the zombie's neck. The sword hit the ground as he separated its head.
