The next day we saw some Animal Deviants.
I felt sorry for people with pets, they must've died in their own house by them as animals were a lot superior in hunting than humans without weapons in the first place. Now that some of them became Deviants they were a lot stronger as Beast Deviants then the Human Deviants.
Sunlight had told me that she saw a weird bird-like pigeon, but it was two times larger and had a red beak. She said it had blood all over it as well. It must've been going back to its nest after a hunt.
We also saw a rat Deviant. We had realised that rat, cat and dog Deviants will be the most common in the world, just because of the fact that many people had one as a pet. As for rat Deviants, it was scary to think about as the amount of trash there was in the world just made earth heaven for rats. The amount of them the world had at this point was in tens of billions. A lot more than there were people on earth. If they were also evolving then it's just scary to think about.
We had also observed another thing the Blood Ghosts were sneaky bastards. They would turn into a puddle of blood and suddenly attack you.
It just so happened that Sunlight had become our scout while Archi joined us to hunt the Deviants.
Even after a long day everyone still felt energetic as the blood crystals recovered stamina. We also got off without any injuries. To be honest, I didn't want to know what would happen if one of us got injured as I didn't want them to become Deviants, thus we were extremely careful.
Even though we were careful we weren't careful enough.
The Deviants rippled out! We were fighting three Deviants on the corner of the street. Then out of the corner five more ran out and after them four more!
"Don't run we have to fight them or we will die running!" I said to them as I could see the fear in their eyes, they wanted to run, but I knew that we could never do that or more Deviants are going to start chasing us.
"If we run we will end up like the guy from a few days ago!"
I rushed out and without remorse lunged myself at the Deviants. I cut one of their heads right away. Another one jumped on me from behind as I turned and punched him in the face. Its face mangled it got knocked back a couple of steps.
Another one rushed at me from the side but I didn't have time.
Fortunately, Telos jumped to my side, stabbed ta Deviant with his sword and kicked him back. He pulled out the sword when he kicked the Deviant and with with the pulling force he swung his sword as he span. The force was incredible as he cut the Deviant into two.
The others then jumped in as well. Archi with Baseball bat in her hands, don't know why but she loved the baseball bat. Maybe because she liked playing tennis.
We were surrounded by Deviants as we fought back against them. Then the first casualty happened. Telos was cut on his arm by a deviant with spikes all over its body.
I gasped in shock and worry as I grabbed the deviant on its' two spikes and lifted it the air. I threw the bastard at another three Deviants. They all got impaled and stuck on each other because of the long 20 cm spikes all over the other Deviants body.
I went on a rampage as I looked to the side and cut two Deviant heads with one swing. Even I didn't know I had such strength to do that. Blood and gore were spilling everywhere. The organs of the Deviant that was on the ground were on the ground. One of the Deviants slipped on it and smashed his head on the ground.
"Telos retreat back to your mother and get her to bandage you." I said as I looked at him. I saw blood furiously gushing out from the deep cut.
Archi went bad with her eyes red she started destroying four Deviants on the ground. Their heads became a mush before she stopped.
Meanwhile, I and Jason dealt with the remaining 5 deviants. After all of them were killed I quickly got their crystals and we rushed back to the house.
My grandson got injured! My heart was aching like never before. I should've protected him and been more careful!
I could see Jason being in the same position as well, as his father he must have felt even worse.
We saw Telos with an already bandaged arm and Sunlight with red eyes and trembling hands. This reminded me of when I cut my hand once when I was young. My mother was so shocked when she saw the blood gushing out of my finger. She was so lost that at first, she started cleaning the blood of the ground instead of helping me. So I could understand why Sunlight was acting like that even though she was a doctor. Treating family members was a lot different from treating patients.
"Telos, grandchild, do you feel anything weird?" I asked him worried.
"Just a little bit of pain." Telos gave a slight smile.
"We avoided a disaster this time, but with disaster comes fortune. We obtained a lot of crystals." I said and showed the handful of crystals to them. Some of them were a little bit bigger than the others. They were most likely from those Deviants that had evolved a little bit more than others.
"Sunlight try using your powers on Telos." I asked her as we had to make sure they were actually powers of healing.
Sunlight was still in shock as she just blankly nodded her head and focused on using her powers. A light came out of her palms as she gently placed them on Telos arm. Her eyes were closed and eyebrows knit, she was doing her best to focus and use her full power.
Everyone had a worried face as they observed hoping for the best. A minute later Telos face started to lighten.
"This feels really comforting. My wound is starting to feel a little bit itchy as well." My face lit up when I heard Telos say that. These were clear signs that it was healing.
Sunlight was also happy now that she felt useful.
"Now let's just hope you don't turn in to a Deviant." I joked as I chuckled, but it seemed that I was the only one laughing.
I and Jason waited on the roof. Telos and others were already sleeping.
We looked at the stars and chatted while having a can of beer.
"I am useless as a father." Jason sighed in depression.
I shook my head, "We are feeling the pressure as men of the family, as we must look after them. Now that Apocalypse it's even harder than it as before. Now we have to not only care about their safety but the food on the table and their wellbeing as well. We must work hard." I said with a smile. I understood these things after a long life and encouraged Jason.
"Dad, you are right, but you lived a long life and raised everyone. While I still have yet to do my part, you gave everyone hope in this damned land. You gave us the courage to kill the Deviants and work on the path of becoming stronger as a whole."
I laughed, "As the family head, of course, I have to take care of yous, but I have respect for you as well. You managed to woo my daughter and made her into a woman. I had always regretted that I raised her too much like a boy. When she was young she was like a boy going around making trouble and fighting people. She probably wouldn't care back then even if everyone died. I mean she still probably doesn't care, but at least now she cares about her family."
Somehow the conversation turned from talking about responsibility and pressure to talking about the funny things Sunlight did when she was young.
"Remember when she was having a competition in the Judo club?" Jason asked with a reminiscent smile as he laid on the roof.
I almost burst out laughing, "The time where she went to the viewing seats and threw some guy in the arena to beat him just because he said she was bad?"
Jason said while smiling, "Yeah, I think that's when I first realised that I must marry her."
…
It has been a week since the Apocalypse had started. The signs of the army were non-existent, to say the least. It seemed that they were in quite the trouble. Even the looters haven't been insight, but that was because they had no way to get here. After checking 12 houses in total, not even one of them had living people, most of them didn't even have Deviants in them, although it made sense as most people were out on a Friday night.
We were also able to get a clear picture on the other side of the two bridges that led off the island., and what we saw was horrifying.
From the other side of the bridge, the immeasurable amount of Deviants walked towards the island. That's why no matter how many Deviants we killed when we woke up there would be just as many again. We were completely stuck in this place, so unless we were able to become strong enough to rush past them, we would die.
The Plants were growing at an extreme pace. The first floor of most buildings was already covered with strange vines that had spikes on them. Some of the flowers and trees were also becoming more brilliant or even shining. Although it was the middle of the summer and the heats were currently the highest, but it still didn't make sense. The grass that was growing around my house, I had to cut it twice already.
The world had transformed crazily in just a week.
