Chapter 69 - Overconfident Leads to Defeat

It appears that the Major and her men have encountered something that requires a far more serious amount of firepower, and I decide to double back to have a look since I sort of wander off on my own in my greed. It would be not be a good thing if the Major gest herself killed right now.

Or worse. There are plenty of things worse than death. There always are.

In any case, the Major is my ticket into the military base without violence, and she might be my ticket into taking control of the whole US military in the future. Well, just one of my tickets anyway. Always have a backup plan as well as backup plan to that backup plan.

"Argh! Let me go, you stupid mutt!" one of the soldiers screams in pain while emptying his gun straight into what appears to be an overgrown dog. Several overgrown dogs, actually. These must be the guard dogs of this Museum, from before the monsterification as well as afterwards.

The Fog of Evolution does not only affect humans. It affects everything biological, including plants and trees. As such, animals and insects are also affected, and they are far more specialized than those who had turned into monsters.

I believe these dogs are called Sprite Hounds, and I will have to check with the System through Identify later. Using it will cause a System Window to pop up, and it will cause the Major to be suspicious.

She is already suspicious, but then again, she is always suspicious. She doesn't believe anything unless she has seen it for herself. It is one of her most annoying traits.

Anyway, it takes an awful amount of bullet to take down one of the hounds, and that is not because of their thick armor-like furs. It is because they are exceedingly quick on their feet. That is a given due to them being dogs, but for them to break through the defensive lines in a blink of an eye and bite the defenders is a bit of a surprise.

The Major is currently gripping her shoulder while flames encircle her protectively. Judging that alone, she must have been bitten. If this was a Ghoul Hound, an undead monster from the first time around, she would have been infected and needed to put down before she turns into an undead. Luckily, she only has to deal with evolved rabies. Not sure if that is better or worse.

"Where have you been!?" the Major barks angrily at me before gritting her teeth violently. She is in a lot of pain, and it is becoming more painful as time passes. Her flames are also reacting to her agitated state of mind.

"I was only carrying out your request, Major," I response with a smile, but she cannot really tell under my gasmask. "You do not look so well. Have you been bitten by those dogs?"

"What do you think?" the Major retorted and blasted one of the dogs with her flames, turning it into ash in an instant. "Damn thing sneaks up on me."

"Yeah, they do that, usually to the pack leader," I comment as I recall what I know of the monster from my encounter with them. They are not as intelligent as humanoid monsters, but they still have enough brain to ambush others. "You are a pack leader in their eyes, and taking you out mean a better chance for victory. Pretty smart, I must say so myself. Or maybe it is due to your overconfident?"

The Major glares at me before I shrug and take out a sniper rifle and execute each of the hounds one by one while they were distracted by the soldiers. Armor piecing rounds are still very effective at taking down armored monsters.
