Ten minutes later, I arrived at my south Coogee six-bedroom house, overlooking the cliffs and beautiful streaks of the blue ocean below. The weather had turned bad, and it was a rainy and stormy evening. As I entered my house, I felt that it was too large for just the two of us, and I missed the cosy apartment where I had grown up. My mother had made a smart choice by choosing to live simple in a clean little apartment.
I walked upstairs and found Alex in the home office. He looked up and spoke to me: "Where have you been Sabina, I tried to call you several times. I got worried when you didn't pick up the phone."
"I went to my mother to have a nice long comforting chat. I needed to talk to her and find some inner peace after our fight today." I replied while looking deeply into Alex's eyes.
Alex looked back at me gently and spoke: "I am sorry about that fight, Sabina. It's my fault. I shouldn't dictate what you spend money on. You are the charity's biggest contributor, after all."
I smiled at Alex replied: "I am happy you say that. But to be fair, we are both at fault, I should have consulted you before I decided to pay the money to see Pierre."
"Great. Let's put this behind us. I know we will easily make the money back, given your special abilities to make the right choices in the stock market. Would my lady want a deep-tissue massage before we go to bed?" Alex said. He looked relieved and smiled at me.
Alex's bright smile and the offered massage were so enticing, so I almost forget the important matter I had to discuss with him. I forced my smile away and instead looked at Alex with a serious face. "Alex…There is something else that I need to tell you. Something I should have told you a long time ago," I said cautiously.
Alex's smile disappeared, and he responded with a worried voice: "What is it, Sabina?"
"I… I haven't been honest with who I am. What I am," I said quietly.
"What on Earth are you talking about? We grew up together. We went to school together. I know who you are, Sabina," Alex responded in confusion.
"Well, the first time you met me, I was sixteen. But there was something remarkable that happened to me before that age, that I haven't told you," I responded cautiously.
"So, what is it that you haven't told me?" Alex asked.
Now, here is the dilemma. How do you tell your loving husband, who you have known since your teenage years, that you are the future saviour of humankind, reborn into the present day by the supreme deity? How do I tell someone I love this crazy story that I have psionic powers, enabling me to read and influence minds? I decided to tackle the issue head-on.
"I have lived before, in another life," I stated.
Alex stared at me in disbelief, unsure whether I was joking or not. Eventually, he spoke: "Hmm. I think you are serious here, Sabina. Well, I have heard of people claiming to have lived before, and you are hardly the only person in the world that believes in reincarnation. But it puzzles me that you haven't told me about it until now."
"Well, those people are usually just imagining, but I am different. I am the reincarnation of Sabina Eisenstein, The Chosen One, from the 29th Century. Although I feel that I have become increasingly human when living during this era," I stated.
Alex looked at me for a while, and then he broke out in thundering laughter. He laughed so hard, he was struggling to breathe and was rolling around on the floor. When he had calmed down, he replied. "What a prank, Sabina. You really got me with that one. "
I smiled back at Alex. I couldn't resist being pulled into his mindset as he was a very handsome and charismatic man. Eventually, I managed to be serious again. "I am not joking, Alex. I was reborn in our age, given psionic powers, premonition, and heightened intelligence by the True Maker."
Alex, still in a good mood since his fit of laughter, replied playfully. "So, tell me, my love, except for being stunningly beautiful and making billions of dollars, what power did your deity give you?"
"Well, he allowed me to survive a dozen bullets. I also survived standing next to a suicide bomber. More importantly, he gave me the power to read and influence minds."
Alex, still in an upbeat mood, laughed it off and responded: "Are you sure there is only normal tea in your mother's tea kettle? I want to come by and drink tea with you guys someday, if this is the effect I'm getting."
"It's definitely just tea. I'll prove it to you. Think of three random letters." I said.
"Sure, surprise me," Alex said and laughed.
"You were thinking of E, S, X" I stated confidently.
"You got the order wrong, but yes" Alex teased back.
"Umm… Okay. The night your mother died; you wore a pink t-shirt with a pony cartoon!" I stated.
"What? How would you know? It's totally uncool to bring up my mother's death, Sabina! But how on earth would you know?" Alex replied in surprise.
"I told you already, Alex. I am an empath, I can read people's minds" I replied.
"That's enough, Sabina. Why did you bother finding out my embarrassing childhood secrets? And why did you bring up my dead mother?" Alex asked. He looked angry, and his face turned red. Clearly Alex's mother's death, was an unhealed wound.
I hugged Alex and whispered. "I am sorry, Alex. I just needed to show you my abilities. Now, I want you to be happy again."
At the end of that sentence, Alex smiled at me. "Yes, I am happy. But why, just a second ago I was feeling sorrow and rage. What is happening?" he asked, genuinely surprised.
"I am an empath. I was influencing your mind to feel a certain way," I replied plainly.
My response scared Alex, and he backed away from me. "Why are you doing this to me? Are you playing me around like a fool?"
"I am sorry, Alex; I didn't know what else to do. Originally, I intended to carry out my purpose on my own. But when I got close to you, I realised that I needed you. That I had to be with you to be happy. I had my powers; I just couldn't stop myself from using them to make us happy." I said this with tears running down my cheeks.
"So our relationship is a big lie? You used supernatural powers to manipulate my feelings, so I don't even know what is the real me anymore?" Alex asked in disbelief and anger.
"I hope that you believe me when I say, that I want us to be happy. I know we are both happy together." I replied reassuringly, hoping to calm Alex down.
"But how can I know?" Alex asked.
"I… don't know" I stuttered.
We sat silent for a while. Eventually, Alex spoke: "So, why did you tell me now?"
"I have struggled with my conscience. I know I shouldn't spy on you, but I just couldn't help myself. It's a complicated ability to have and not use. Like seeing things in front of your eyes, without seeing it", I replied with a sincere voice.
Alex sat silent for a long time. Eventually, he spoke. "Sabina, I have some cousins in Queensland that I haven't seen for years. I will visit them on my own and consider our relationship. I'll leave this evening."
I realised that Alex was doing the right thing. The only thing that he could do after my confession, was to stay away from me for a while, and decide whether he wanted to stay in the relationship. The prospect of losing him petrified me, so I cried out. "I understand. Please come back. Consider how happy we have been and all the good that we can do together."
Alex nodded and replied. "I know. I just need to figure out whether this is something I really want, or if it's just what you want me to desire." Having said this, he opened the door and walked off, leaving me to feel sad and lonely in my big empty mansion.
I thought of going back to my mother and seek her sympathy, but I realised that Alex left because of my own actions. I was no longer a little girl; I was a strong woman. With or without Alex, I had a goal to achieve; to make the world a better place.
I went to my home office and started trading. I had a new target. I wanted to beat Pierre Beaumont and the World Bank at their own game, to stop their nefarious influence on the world.
