Chapter 20 - Watchers (Ch. 20)

Michael had an apologetic look on his face, "I am sorry to hear about your struggles in life. I hope you have gotten along well since then. My family was lost also, that is how me and Madame Priestess first met." Michael smiled at Vivi and she smiled back. "Thank you Sir Michael. Madame Priestess is actually the reason I came. I am here to take us back to Sir Shoyo. Are you ready?" Michael nodded. "Good," Vivi put the frame back on the dresser and walked towards Michael. "Close your eyes please," Michael did as he was told and shortly after heard a whooshing sound of wind rushing past his ears.

When he opened his eyes, he could feel the aura of three others, not including himself or Vivi. He looked around the small cream colored room. There were two patient beds on one side of the room and two more on the other side. Sir Shoyo sat on the edge of a medium sized wooden desk that Michael knew was Sir Shoyo's when he didn't have patients. He saw that the small window had been propped open and the door was open as well. The slight breeze ruffled the curtains and the thin sheets on top of the beds. His eyes drifted to the bed where Wren was, and he let out a sigh of relief. He was about to walk forward, bit upon seeing the mess of blood and another clear liquid on the ground he froze. He looked towards Sir Shoyo, "What happened to Lady Wren?" Michael asked with a low tone in his voice, almost similar to a low growl of a wild animal.

Vivi shuddered at the sound and distanced herself from him. "Sir Michael, do you believe I am incompetent? I have done what can be done for our Priestess. My life would be on the line if I let anything happen to her. She had an extreme reaction to the sap from the Ancient Tree and the black powder that both you and Miss Naya needed in order to cross through the checkpoint." Michael made himself calm down, then he walked over towards Wren and pulled up a stool to sit next to her bed. "Tell me more," Michael's voice had returned to the normal tone, but his face was still very tense. Vivi looked over to Sir Shoyo, and he nodded, "Get everything cleaned up. I put the token by her bedside. Once you are done, inform Ari, Cole, and Aster about their condition. I will provide Michael with the needed information." Vivi slightly bowed down and got to work.

Michael noticed the token Sir Shoyo had talked about. He looked down at Wren's sleeping face, 'She looks like she's in pain. I'm sure that was her blood on the ground, not to mention the other bedding and bandages in the waste area.' Michael gently touched her face with the sides of his fingers, 'Please be okay My Lady. I need to be by your side more than you need me there. "We will get to the bottom of this." Sir Shoyo stood up and walked over to Michael with another stool in hand. He set the stool down near the foot of the bed, "Do you know who let Haruki escape?" Michael shook his head, "No Sir Shoyo, when I found her, it looked like he had chewed on her limbs and was pawing at her. I know he is one of the Four Great Animal Spirits, but shouldn't The Watchers at the shrines have suppressed most of his power? That's why we appoint them to begin with is it not?"

Sir Shoyo nodded, "Yes, The Watchers main objective to suppressing the nature energy of The Four Animal Spirits, while keeping the barrier functioning and balanced between nature and spiritual energy. This is a reason we appoint a Fire Level and a Lunar Level, two council members, and/or a Water Level clan member to guard all sides and to assist the others where needed. If Haruki, the Silver Fox Spirit of West, was able to escape the barrier and harm Madame Priestess in such a way, there may be more incidents to come. What phase of the moon were the in when you found Madame Priestess?"

Michael thought back, "I believe it was a new moon, the period in which nature energy becomes harder for people to control. I seem to remember nurses talking within the hospital about how there were more people coming in with wounds similar to Lady Wren's. Do you think it's possible Haruki actually harmed others from our territory as well as others? Even before we had the system with The Watchers, he was always the more docile of this current four. The hospital treats those that are clan members and those who are not. If we do not get this incident under control, we could be facing another crisis." Sir Shoyo sighed deeply, stood up, walked over to a small bookcase, and pulled out an old leather bound book.

"Do you remember The Traveler, or rather, Conner?" Michael had a confused look on his face and shook his head. "Well I suppose you were just a child then, you wouldn't remember much about before the war. Honestly I am not sure how much Madame Priestess really knows either, and I hope she never fully regains her memories about him." Sir Shoyo sat back down and opened the book, "Before the war started, there were a few instances of unexplained deaths around our territory, that caused quite a stir. There was record of, The Traveler, as they called him, and a beauty with deep purple hair that were found guilty of these murders as well as other crimes. All of their crimes were committed in the name of "experimental purposes". What the general public didn't know was that the purple haired beauty was Wren's mother, they just assumed she died during the war. She and this man Conner conspired with Elder Takeda to conduct these experiments and to essentially destroy our way of life. Wren's mother, Sharron, and Conner, killed Wren's parents; her real parents, her adoptive brother Diego, and Sharron actually killed her own husband, Gilbert."

Michael was taken aback by all of the information Sir Shoyo was sharing with him. He remained quiet and let Sir Shoyo continue talking. "Unbeknownst to Sharron and Conner, Elder Takeda had his own plans and he ended up killing the pair shortly after the war had started. There were other council members and clan members involved in the scandal, however most were found guilty and sentenced to death. Elder Takeda was intended to share a similar fate, but it was said that he disappeared to another island located to our east. I am sharing this with you because I fear, Elder Takeda may be at least somewhat responsible for these events. We have no idea who else may be behind this, I can only trust you and Madame Priestess.

Once she awakes and is strong enough I need you to take her and visit the Southern Territory. Keep her alive and safe as best you can." Sir Shoyo handed the book over to Michael. "Look over this for the time being and do not ever let your guard down." Without another word, Sir Shoyo stood up, put his stool back behind his desk, and walked out of the small room.
