When I stepped in the house, the instant smell of baked chicken hit my nose.
"What are you cooking for dinner?" I asked her stepping in the kitchen.
"Chicken and vegetable soup." she said not looking at me.
"The crispy skin is on the table." I started salivating.
My mom knew that was my favorite thing in the world. I got the feeling she was trying to apologize without apologizing.
Either way, I got chicken skin.
I grabbed a skin off the plate and bit into it. The skin cracked slightly as I bit down. Delicious.
"So mom... my lunch friends and I decided to go to the dance together." I told her.
She turned away from the oven and stared at me.
"We decided to all get ready together here. Do makeup and stuff like that." I said with caution.
My mom instantly got a happy sparkle in her eye. Suddenly she looked excited. I felt an internal cringe as I braced myself for impact.
"Their names are Marie and Karen. They are bringing some beer too." I said looking down at the plate of chicken skins.
She hugged me. "You are trying. I can see that."
I hugged her back awkwardly and sighed. "Can we go shopping this weekend for my outfit? I also don't know much about makeup, maybe you can help me?"
She pulled away slightly to look at me "Of course I'll help you! It's my baby girl's first dance!"
Who knows...maybe I'll like girly stuff.
