The hospital room was bright, almost too bright for Elizabeth. "Where am I?" The young girl asked, not entirely expecting an answer. A doctor walked over and smiled at her. "You're at the hospital, your parents brought you here when you passed out." The doctor said as Elizabeth started to remember what had happened.
Oh yeah, how could I forget that pain, it felt like my skin was burning. She thought to herself. The doctor went over and opened the door to the room, letting in Elizabeth's parents.
"Is she alright?" Her father asked.
"Yes, she's fine for now, but she has a rare medical condition- Maybe we should talk outside, it could be bad for her to-" the doctor had started but was interrupted by a faint voice.
"I, if it has s-something to do w-with me, I-I-I w-want to know, p-please." Elizabeth stumbled to say.
The doctor walked over to Elizabeth's parents whispering to them, though she could still hear them all.
"She has a rare medical condition and it has been lethal in all but two cases, what do you want me to-" The doctor whispered.
"I-I can hear you." Elizabeth said bluntly, with a slight stutter.
"Erm, well…" The doctor said sheepishly.
"It's alright, go ahead and tell her, she deserves to know as well." Elizabeth's mother said in a caring tone, her father nodded to go along with what she said.
"Alright… her condition is called growth obstructing cellular regeneration disorder, or GOCRD for short." The doctor paused and looked over at Elizabeth, worried that she might scream once she hears the rest. Elizabeth gave a kind gaze back to the doctor as she smiled.
"Please continue doctor." Elizabeth's father said abruptly.
"GOCRD is a condition which has so far killed all but two known patients, it's incredibly rare and there are only 20 known cases within the last three hundred years, it only affects girls, and occurs between the ages of two and eight-" The doctor said as he got interrupted yet again.
"You mean she is barely within the age range to get this?" Elizabeth's Mother asked with slight annoyment.
"Yes, that is correct…" The doctor said clearly getting annoyed with the constant interruptions. "look, I'll email you with the specifics later…" The doctor paused as if thinking of a way to quickly wrap up the discussion. "As for now I'll give you a medication to take whenever the pain returns, the first bottle I will give you for free, after that you need to buy it from the clinic." The doctor said while grabbing a pill container from the cupboard above the computer.
"How much will each bottle be afterwards?" The girl's Father asked.
"One hundred thousand, the materials for the medication aren't easy to come by." The doctor replied as he handed over the bottle. "Well anyways bring her back on the tenth next month for a check-up, just to make sure she's still doing alright." The doctor said as he ushered the three out the door.
As they left the doctor's office Elizabeth looked up at her father, with his short black hair and blue eyes, and said. "F-Father… will I... be okay?" her father looked down at her with a warm smile.
"Yes, you will." He said with a thoughtful tone.
