Chapter 33 - The Case

Aaron did not understand what had gotten into him. The girl whom he married was the person he can never love or can ever forgive. She was a liar, a liar who defended a murderer for her selfish deeds.

One day, after returning from school, Aaron overheard his father's conversation with his aunt's husband, Antony Whales. He knocked on the door and entered into the room after his father's approval. To his surprise, his father was startled at the sight of him. Looking at his father's reaction to his presence, Aaron thought that his father mistook him for a maid when he knocked on the door.

"Grandpa wants to talk to you," Aaron informed his father. Marcus looked at his son and then at his brother-in-law with a nod before he gave a reply.

"I forgot that I had to meet him," Aaron's father got up from his seat. The man behaved differently before he left the room. Aaron was skeptical after witnessing his father's facial expressions.

"Thank you. I'll talk to you later," Anthony replied.

Aaron noticed his uncle and his father exchange a blank stare at each other, it was as if they were trying to hide something from him. Antony Whales, a well-known prosecutor and known for his honesty and hard work. Aaron didn't understand what made a man like him have a conversation with his father in private. Numerous thoughts started to weave on his mind when he felt something odd to see a change in the two men's behaviour.

"New case?" enquired Aaron pretending to be nonchalant.

"Yes," Anthony nodded.

"Were you both discussing about your case?" Aaron asked him.

"No. We were having a chat about a land issue," answered Anthony.

"Can I know about your new case?" Aaron asked his uncle observing his subtle movements of tensity.

"Why are you always so curious about my cases," Anthony gave a dry laugh and tried to divert the topic. But Aaron clearly understood his intentions.

"Nothing, it's just a curiosity," Aaron answered looking at Anthony while he waited for him to answer.

Anthony sighed and understood that he had no other option but to tell his nephew a little bit about the case he was dealing with and leave as soon as possible. " It's a case of a doctor killing a woman with a poisonous injection."

"What kind of poison was it?"

"It was potassium cyanide," answered Anthony Whales.

"I'm very sorry!!" Anthony apologized when the file in his hand fell on Aaron's feet while he got up from his seat in a hurry. Aaron's eyes fell on the pictures which were scattered on the floor. His eyes widened in shock when there was a picture of Elizabeth and her mother. There was another picture too. It was a picture of the lady whom Elizabeth's mother killed.

"Was this the woman who killed... ?" he asked in disbelief, picking up the photograph from the floor.

"Well yes, I have told you many details. If you excuse me, I shall take my leave," Anthony cut down Aaron's words with a smile taking the picture from his nephew.

"You are aware of the person who is in the picture, aren't you?" Aaron's tone changed.

"I do. I feel sorry for you but..."

"Tell me what happened?!" Aaron demanded an answer. Anthony sighed heavily and told him the things he came to know about the case he was dealing with. "Her daughter was the only witness and gave the testimony against her mother during the trials. But after her mother's suicide, she says that her mother only helped the victim," Anthony said at the end.

After listening to his uncle's story and the proofs that were gathered at the victim's house, Aaron was raged into anger. The eighteen-year-old Aaron could not think of any other things but blamed the murderer for killing an innocent human and her daughter who was defending her mother. Aaron hated Elizabeth to an extent that he didn't want to see her face again. Years later when he came to know that the vixen he once loved was going to get married to his cousin, he decided to break the marriage at any cost and torture her for her selfish deeds. Everyone mistook that Aaron married Elizabeth to win against Steve Winscet but the truth was a part of him didn't want his cousin to get married to a woman like her and another part of him wanted to get back the one he loved once upon a time. After his marriage, he felt as if he was under her spell. A spell which was making him be pulled closer to her more and more. Her words were lies and her eyes which gives a false impression of pureness, made him lose his control every time he looked into them. It was her eyes, which made him lose control over himself and made him forget everything that had happened before. That night, his emotions overtook and all he could remember was the love he once had for her which made him be lost in her embrace.

There was a time when Aaron thought if hating her for the things her mother did was right. He didn't even talk to her after that day and left for states without a second thought. There were times when he thought If things would've changed if he met her once and talked to her. At the same time, he shoves away those thoughtful questions and made up his mind saying, a person who defends a murderer cannot be trusted. He wondered how a person could even defend a murderer and demand to have a thorough investigation when the proof that was gathered says that it was her mother who killed an innocent human. It was true that the woman was her birth giver, but giving a testimony that her mother was the culprit and later demanding a thorough investigation after her mother's suicide, made him disgust her.
