Meeting up at the city gate the next day was Clarence and Nathaniel. The face persent on both men couldn't be more opposed. Nathaniel with a stupidly gleeful smile and Clarence with an ominous deadpan.
"Come on we have to get going, I must finish this today and get my license." said an almost winy Nathaniel.
"THIS KID! In a hurry to get his A** beat. And all so he can start his adventurers career a little sooner." Clarence sighed under his breath to where the kid couldn't hear.
It didn't take long while walking to hear the distinctive buzzing given off by the bees. The bees didn't have any need to fear the creatures of this region. Only as you start pressing deeper into the Grand Wood would they find things worthy of their concern.
Their hives were enormous, completely covering the base of trees leaving only their branches uncovered. As the gleeful Nathaniel quickly approached the hive his ears were assaulted by the sheer noise produced by 10000 bees buzzing in unison. Clarence had gone into a nearby tree away from Nathaniel simply seeking to observe the terror the kid would exhibit in a hopeless situation.
Nathaniel looked at the hive in fascination, they seemed to disregard his very existence. Most insects would show fear for humans seeking to hide in the shadows instead of attacking. This was Nathaniel's first time outside of the city. His father wishing to shield him from the world to keep him from ending up like his Uncle Samuel dead in his early 30s.
As such this was Nathaniel first encounter with bees, wasps, or any attacking insect for that matter. So of course he would find their nature interesting. He started approaching the hive, once he was within three wingspans of the hive they finally took notice of him.
They suddenly attacked hundreds flying at full speed to him yet all Nathaniel felt was amusement. How stupid were these insects to charge him as if they had forgotten their place at the bottom of the food chain. Honestly Nathaniel was surprised to see such a quest be Tin ranked which is why he took it in the first place.
In the top of a nearby tree Clarence looked on in shock, "WHAT IS THIS KID DOING! Just walking casually to the hive with no regard for his own safety."
Just then a group of bees finally were in striking distance of Nathaniel. He stood still just watching the attacking bees in complete disregard.
" I can't protect this kid if he's acting like a F***ING RETARD." Clarence continued contemplating wether or not the kid was too stupid or scared to run.
Then before he could even release an arrow to save the kid the first bee struck. A look of shock and terror filled his eyes knowing that he would fail his first ever protectorate quest which was the linchpin to his promotion.
Nathaniel looked quickly to the stingy bee before looking at the tens of others in succession. He felt no pain which made his mind further perplexed as to why the bees would choose to attack; if they simply let him take some honey non of their lives would be at risk. But now that they attacked him he now could only retaliate in kind. With the simple flick of his wrist over a dozen bees swatted away a few even being turned to a paste. He kept on slowly walking to the hive swatting away any bees that came to him effortlessly in the process.
Upon reaching the hive he was completely covered by bees looking like a gray amorphous blob. Yet still perfectly fine, he simply couldn't swatt away the bees quickly enough. At this point he was having to brush the bees out of his eyes in order to see. After clearing his line of sight he grabbed the few mason jars he had brought along to hold the honey which he would collect. Placing on the ground in front of him he reached his arms deep into the hive only stopping once he hit a sticky wax comb inside the hive. Pulling out what ended up being the large honeycomb dripping with deep violet colored honey. He let the dripping honey fill up the four mason jars that he had before leaving to return to the Guild hall.
The astonished Clarence could only close his slack jaw and follow the kid back to the Guild.
