Chapter 11 - A Bygone Era

Avery took a shower after Millie left. She enjoyed her bath as the bathroom is equipped with modern facilities. Drying her hair with a towel and humming a tune as she went out in her bathrobe, she almost shrieked when she saw a man in her room dressed in old fashioned clothes.

He looked near 50's and was frowning at her.

"Amelia, have you just started preparing for our dinner celebration? Why are you not ready yet?! The general will be arriving soon!" he admonished her sternly.

Why is this man calling her Amelia? Avery was confused and was very surprised.

"Who are you? Why are you in my room?" she asked.

"Who am I? Did you hit your head and forgot your father young lady?!", he boomed.

Father? Is she dreaming?

"Stop making lame excuses and get dressed! He is bringing his son and we are planning to get you engaged to him", the man said and then went down.

What was that about? Avery almost shrieked. She was further shocked when she looked at herself wearing an old fashioned robe. Checking her closet, all clothes there belonged to the early 1900s. She hurriedly looked at the window and saw an unfamiliar landscape.

Looking at the mirror, she saw a different version of herself. Her hair has no color and styled as in the older times.

A knock was heard and a woman older than her by a few years went in.

"I' m here to help you Miss. You're father instructed that you should hurry up."

" What's your name? What is the date today?," Avery croaked, still disoriented.

Has the young Miss lost her mind? Why is she asking silly questions? Maybe its her nervousness to meet the general's son.

"I'm Talin Miss. I have been your maid since you were eight. And today is the 5th of May, 1916. Please don't be nervous for this party."

Avery was aghast. How did she got here? Was it a time warp?

Talin helped her wear a beautifully embroidered qipao of the finest silk and styled her hair.

"Let's go Miss. Hurry!, Talin prodded.

Avery sighed. There's nothing she could do now but go with the flow. She took a deep breath and opened the door.
