Chereads / The Frozen Cross / Chapter 4 - Eyes

Chapter 4 - Eyes

The next day, Peter returned to his dignated position and gave orders to the Stefan. He handed them a map of the entire place, "This is is all the possible places where the enemy could come from. This is where... "

"Huh? What does he mean?" Gustav asked

"Don't ask me, like I know." Bismarck answered

Otto somehow knew what was in Peter's mind, "He's really serious about her. Could she really be alive?" He thought

"Then that's that." Peter said. Stefan's tank commander had his brains exploded with everything Peter gave him, "Uh, anyways, why give me these?"

Peter turned towards his' units, "We're going on a trip."

"HUH?!" All of them complained. Peter's murderous aura appeared, and all of them scampered to collect their own stuff, and return to their stations.

"Lieutenant's serious right?" Gustav asked

"Why ask us always?!" Kurfürst complained

"Just follow him. This is something that interests me too... " Otto said to them

"You too, sergeant?" Both of them asked

"Yes. We are after something that will give Peter more reason to fight."

After preparing themselves, they fully entrusted the place's security to Stefan, and left, "Where we going lieutenant?" Otto asked

"There's an American occupied town to the North West." He said

"Do you think it's the most possible place where you can find her?" Otto thought, "I had their forward base destroyed Otto, so there's no other place where the survivors could ever go... "

"Damn it! He read my mind! Damn you Müller!"

"Damn you too... " Peter said out of nowhere

The three other boys have absolutely no idea what's going on, and blew their minds and went to sleep.

Meanwhile on the remains of Doss' company, Violet woke up quite early and finds Doss fueling a jeep, "Lieutenant, what's up?"

"Oh, I was about to take you in a nearby town. Uh, sorry if I wake you."

"N-No you haven't lieutenant! I just fell off the sofa and- Ow!"

"And you scraped your arm...!" He scolded Violet, "Why not be careful?!"

"I'm sorry... " she shyly said, as Doss knelt down and patched her wound, "Thank you for your kindness, lieutenant"

"Don't mention it... " when Doss got up, his face nearly touched Violet's. They stared at each other's eyes for quite a long time, before they adverted their gazes.

"I-I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Violet squealed, as she covered her cheeks, burning red. Doss, also tried to evade the awkward situation, "T-The jeep's already fueled up. I t-think we should be going now. After you... "he said opening the car door

"Y-Yes!" She said as she entered the jeep holding her chest, "My heart wouldn't stop pounding. Why was it?! Why?!"

Half an hour later, they reached small lively town. It was fully occupied by American hands, and was made into a forward base, "We're here... " he said as he woke Violet, who fell asleep again, "Welcome to Dog company's forward base."

"Mmm...?"

When they got off the jeep, the field lieutenant warmly greeted Doss, "Lieutenant Parker! It's been long!" he saluted. Doss saluted as well, but he couldn't get his right posture, because Violet was still half asleep, and was clinging on his arm, "Y-Yeah, I-It's been a long time Lieutenant Ryker... "

"Parker...?" Violet groggily asked, "That's my name" he replied

"Hmm... Who's she, lieutenant?" Ryker said with a naughty smile, "I she-"

"Sergeant Violet Musgroove, at your service!" Violet said yawning

"The rumored maiden soldier... " Ryker gasped, "Anyways are you two datin-PANG!"

Before he could finish, Parker threw an uppercut at Ryker that sent him flying, "You're so mean brother, I was just asking!" he screamed

"Huh...? Brother...?" asked the puzzled Violet, "He was my younger brother, Ryker. The lieutenant of Dog company. "

Parker led Violet through a marketplace where all sorts of personal things are being sold. The place was quite crowdy so he took Violet by the hand, to avoid losing sight of her, "Is there anything you like?" he asked. Violet said nothing, but she just held her growling stomach, "You're hungry?" Parker chuckled, as Violet nodded shyly, "I'll find you something to eat." he said as he rubbed her head

It took a long time before he figured out why Violet was refusing everything he gave her as options, "Damn! She was a German! How foolish of me to forget!" he thought to himself. After some time, Parker found some restaurant with sausages as their specialty. It didn't take long before she finished three dishes in one go, "You sure have quite an appetite, don't you?"

That's when Violet only managed to restrain herself, "Have some, lieutenant!" she said handing over a sausage, "No, no, I'm good. Just take it for-" before he could finish, Violet stuffed his mouth with a sausage. Actually, he hates them. But not to make Violet unhappy, he said they're great, "I'm glad you like them, lieutenant!" she smiled at him. For a second, the sausage in his mouth somehow tasted delicious upon seeing Violet smile, "Mmm... " he said

After eating, they spent some time in Ryker's forward HQ, then at night, they went back to the marketplace, "Now, is there anything you like?" Parker asked. It took an hour of traveling the entire place before a blue coloured brooch caught her sight, "Doesn't it look beautiful my dear child?" The lady store owner asked her, "It is indeed very beautiful, but-" she was concerned about the value, but before she could speak it out, Parker interrupted from behind, "Then count it as yours."

"But lieutenant!"

"No more 'but's'"

After Parker bought the brooch for her, she couldn't stop admiring it, "You like that much?" he asked

"Yes! I like it, lieutenant! Thank you!" she said smiling

A while later, they stood by a bridge to rest, "Uh, lieutenant, why'd you brought me here, may I ask?"

"It's nothing. I just want to temporarily expell you from the world of war. You've been through so much, that you nearly lost your life."

"Oh, thank you, lieutenant. You're so kind to me... " she then felt her heart beating faster and faster, so she kept silent to calm herself, "Why again?!" she thought

For some time, they became quiet. Parker cleared his throat, and broke the silence, "Why'd you pick that color?" he was referring to the brooch, "Because they're as beautiful as your eyes, lieutenant. I thought they're beautiful, the first time I saw them." Parker's face darkened.

Parker took it from her, and buttoned it between her collars. It was pretty, yet it became prettier when it was on Violet. When he lifted his head, his face nearly touched Violet's... Again. Her heart beats fast like crazy. This time, Parker had absolutely no resistance. He kissed Violet. It was natural that she was shocked, but it didn't last long before she went with the flow. Soon after, Parker hugged her tightly, "I'm sorry... I'm sorry... " he said slightly sobbing

Violet thought it was because of he kissed her out of nowhere, but no, "You're so young and innocent, yet I initiated you to continue fighting. You're so kind, yet I repaid you so badly... I've been so selfish!" Parker thought

A while later, Violet felt the wet warmth in her shoulder. She embraced Parker tightly as well, to calm him down. A little more while later, Parker collected himself, and suggested that they should come back already.

Halfway of the journey late at night, for some reason, the jeep exhausted fuel. Parker checked, and finds that there was a leakage in the fuel tank, "Shit! I'm terribly sorry! I should've known earlier."

"We must find temporary shelter first... " Violet suggested

The snowfall was very heavy, and Violet was shivering terribly. Parker had to give up some if his outer clothing to her. Luckily, another abandoned house was seen a couple of yards away from them. They made themselves warm inside and rested for a while.

They embraced each other to keep the heat, but it wasn't easy for Parker, being a man. It didn't took long before his last strand of so-called restraint snapped. The burning tiger inside him was unleashed from its cage, and broke free from its tightly shut shackles. Of course they took safety measures.

After a long time, Parker exhausted stamina, and immediately dozed off. But Violet had a habit of sleeping late, even when exhausted from engaging in a pleasurable war just a while ago. Minutes later, she heard footsteps outside. It was not from a human but from an animal. Not one... Not two... Not three... And not even four... But at least ten animals can be heard.

Be fore she knew it, a pack of wolves had been tailing them the whole time! She tried to wake Parker up, but its no use. She dressed herself and got her BAR and some grenades. She was trembling while picking them up, but she swallowed her fears, "I'm sorry Parker... " she mumbled on tears before busting the door open.

She led the pack away from the house, and started killing the entire pack alone. The pack consists of more than what she expected. They were twenty wolves she was fighting off, and only she got was herself, her rifle and three hand grenades. There were fifteen left when she ran out of magazines and all was left is one grenade. She decided to blow herself up along with the wolves, but before she pulled the pin, and before the wolves pounced on her, a series of rapid firing was heard.

It lasted until the pack of wolves was filled with holes on their bodies. When she got up, another wolf was about pounce on her, when Parker appeared and shot it, "Are you ok?! Are you hurt?! Where are you injured?!"

"I'm fine... " then she saw what Parker was holding, "Lieutenant, is that a shotgun?"

"Uh yes, why?" after hearing she looked around, "That firing a while ago. It was from an MG42 machinegun."

"Huh? We didn't have a machinegun, and that's a German machinegun."

Violet searched until she heard the rumbling of the Maybach engine. It somehow made her tremble, but still, she turned towards the direction where it came from.

Under the bright moonlight, standing in front of her, was the mighty Tiger I. Painted on its pitch-black camouflage, was the SS emblem. It was the same Tiger that nearly took her life a few days ago.

The hatch slowly opened, and out came the tank commander. Violet couldn't see who it really was, but when she found out despite being shadowed by the moonlight, she started shedding tears.

The tank commander's eyes are filled with murderous intent, but behind lies despair, and disappointment. Sorrow, in the form of tears flowing from them. Then the tank slowly retreated to the shadows.

"Patricia.. "

"Peter... "

"... Why? "
