The young servant was waiting for Varsas when he wakes up. He did not say a word, but ignores her as he walks back to his study, preparing documents for tomorrow.
One of the source of the war is coming soon. The cause of the endless war was in part human, but it is also true that there was external higher factors contributing to the fact.
Namely a malevolent tumor on reality birth from all the evil did in the war, and in turn feeds the war so it grows ever greater.
The one who fashion itself a war god...
As the world descended into the madness of war, the War God increases its strength, at the peak of the war it finally reveals all its horrible splendor to the world.
A butcher whose strength is horrible beyond belief, ironic that the presence of such an existence finally manage to force everyone to left their grievances aside and joined force or else face destruction. He remembers the horrific scenery of armies being butchered in one terrific strike and horrible flesh eater arrived to eat the corpses. He remembers the horrible voice calling him its kin and ask to join force with him.
He remembers the people calling him War God out of mockeries and fears after the fact.
...Never mind that.
Before its true form is revealed, nothing can be done about the monster who calls itself a God for now. However the effect it has on the world is as real as it come.
Strange occurrences are happening in the east. The land becomes barren, the food stales and rots. Famine has come to the land of Venir.
The Venir land is neighbor to the Gungnir however while the Gungnir is famous for their lush land and riches, the only thing the Venir is known for is misery. They can barely feed themselves on those barren land of the Venir, rumored to have been transformed into this condition due to an old familial dispute where the patriarch of the family salted the field of the member of his family who he hated and their descendant in turn ruined the patriarch's descendant land as retaliation. It is all old blood feud with them, which spews over to the Gungnir's land a few time. As a consequences of those harsh conditions however, the people of Venir is famous for being hardy.
...It is all very tragic yes, but it does not excuse their actions any bit. Varsas promises that the next time any members of the Venir cross him would be their last, and he intends to keep that promise even in the past.
He does not forgive them.
However as the War god's famine is going to struck the Venir land, Varsas saw an opportunity.
The first time around, due to their pride and secrecy, the deterioration of the land has been kept a secret for months on end before the situation was so bad that it can not be kept hidden anymore. They saw it as a weakness to reveal the condition of their land and opt for committing various secret ops instead in vain hope to salvage the situation. Twenty percent of their population died as a result, and because it has been so long since the harvest season, there was also no food to be offered or sold. In the end, they become a bitter people who hated the neighbor surrounding them for not offering help.
This time since there was knowledge of the future, it would be a simple matter of ordering the Gungnir clansman and associate to stockpile after the harvest instead of selling to the land of dragon as usual.
And then?
Profiteering.
While he isn't doing anything to affect the war and lessen his former comrade glory, it is not above Varsas to try and benefit his family especially since he has already decided to enter hermitage once upon a time because of his family.
In the long term it would also benefit the Venir family...
The bond of comrades does not untie easily. He only has the best interest for Margaret and what she treasures even if that bond to her is no more. If they cross path Varsas does not think he has it in him to finish her off, however...
However if the Venir ever poses a threat on his family, even if he does not have the heart to finish her off, he will kill them all and leaves her as the only survivor.
Would she hates him when that happen?
