After that little confrontation, he went back to pretending that nothing has happened. Knowledge about the Venir's activities fresh on his mind.
Varsas went shopping with his mother on the street of Mansir, the city from which the Gungnir family hold power. He holds a bag of coins in his hand, while other useful goods in his other hand. Marxivus was the one who invented something called paper currency in the future, he wrote an entire thesis which was spread far and wide about the backing of the paper currency's value which Varsas can't really understand, but it was the day right after the war where a lot of politics were going on, there are a lot more he didn't understand. It is going to be useful in situation like this where a lot of goods and money are going to be exchanged is what Varsas thought, but how would a sheet of paper be valued like coins by other people?
Because of all the goods he can only carry a small sword on his waist to defend himself and the lady just as his grandfather taught him. His father disapproved of that, stating that if a ruler is good, you wouldn't need to resolve to violence to defend yourself because the land would be peaceful. While Varsas loves his father and believes that he is right in the end, there are something that he just disagrees with.
And in front of him is the ladies he was supposed to be protecting, but with Margaret as one of the "lady", he does not feel like he is actually needed. This is one of the set up his mother gets up to to get the two together.
It is really awkward because he can mostly tell what she is feeling due to knowing Margaret so well in the future. Added to that, the both of them are playing in pretend, trying to figure out what the other is playing at. Varsas is investigating just what exactly is the Venir's end goal while Margaret is doing her mission. And in the middle is one Liana Gungnir, smiling widely, not noticing the awkward atmosphere.
"My boy is all grown up, protecting all the innocent lady now. I do not have to fear for the future with my little knight in shining armor."
She fuzzes over the details, complimenting him, though it causes him physical pain because in spirit Varsas is a little near 30 now. He left home when he was 17, it took him 10 years to return again.
Suddenly Margaret is nodding at something, she plays along with his mother so well that Varsas has to admit she is the future lady of shadow herself.
They were talking along the way when a ruffian, in mask and everything suddenly showed up.
"Your money or your life punk."
It was such a cliche robbery line but Varsas looks over to Margaret suspiciously before dropping the coins bag in his left hand, drawing his sword in one smooth stroke and knock that guy out instead because his mother is present.
"Woah! Amazing. I didn't know my little Varsas was also good with the sword too." She claps happily while giving the fallen guy a kick.
It was a surprise, no one, not even Margaret or her little agents in the shadow could react to, but Varsas has already defeated the assailants they were using to test him. He used the sword now though, so they couldn't gauge anything from his skill.
Margaret has a look of shock on her face, but Varsas turns to his mom and nods
"Yeah it happens." Varsas nods along while sheathing his sword. Of course he would be used to the sword. Just like the axe, the bow, the mace. There are a lot of weapons Varsas got used to in the future. You just can't expect to be good at one kind of weapon when you go to war. As a normal soldier, you use what you have at hand. Varsas just can't expect people to give him a spear when his own spear break because his own instructor hated him.
It was during a practice battle once upon a time, one of the higher up got handy with Viola, it pissed up both Varsas and Vaine, and while at that time, Varsas did not know that those guy wasn't going to have a good time anyway what with Vaine being who he is, both Varsas and Vaine worked their asses off to beat the living daylight out of that guy. It was humiliating to the other instructors so in the mock battle they ganged up on Varsas and Vaine trying to "educate" them. It did not work though, Varsas was like a rock, blocking and deflecting everything, Vaine was in between, jabbing in attack at the worst possible moment for them.
Outside of that, part of the reason he is familiar with all kind of weapons was because Varsas often switched between the various powerful weapon he found. Right up until he found his final partner, there were a lot of great weapons around the world, magical and otherwise, it is close-minded to limit yourself to only one kind of weapon.
Varsas looks over to Margaret again, and sure enough she was looking elsewhere suspiciously.
After that night he was investigating the Venir but sure enough nothing turn up yet so he has to keep his guard up at all time.
He really does not want to hurt his old friend though. The Venir is staying for three days, so if there is a higher being out there, Varsas prays that it protects the Venir from him during that stay and stop them from doing anything that can't be reconciled.
