Chapter 4 - An old friend from the battlefield, forgotten by time

The normal days rapidly returns even though Varsas has temporarily stunted the clansmen's harvest season income. The only question he was asked out of that debacle was his father saying

"Now why would you do that?"

"The Venir is about to experience a famine due to an ancient evil. I am stocking up so that when that happen we can jack up the price and sell at a profit."

He remembers his father's non-reaction to that. He was mostly fine with whatever Varsas does because after all he is the only heir to the Gungnir family. The lack of reaction in the populace outside of some grumbling was also unexpected.

This is the land of the Gungnir. It is a land that consistently produces bountiful harvest years after years. They are a land of boundless wealth and profit. The people are used to the peaceful days of Varsas's father and chalk Varsas's behavior to be one of the strange phrase a boy went through.

After all they aren't going to be losing anything that worth much to them. Even the money that come from the harvest cannot compare to the peaceful uneventful life they have living in the Gungnir land.

It is a land that lacked nothing. It was also the source of the Venir's jealousy. The same jealously that resulted in a massacre.

Because of those non-reaction Varsas went back to live his uneventful life as the young master of the Gungnir family. Everyday he learns some economic lesson and is trained in the usage of the family's spear art and lightning magic.

Though even in the original timeline by this point he has already mostly master both, he is still forced to learn it under the order of his late grandfather.

"I will be damned the day I let the family's spear art die."

And with the training, he is allowed to use the heirloom weapon of the family. The spear Gungnir is the named weapon of the Gungnir family. It is said that the family was named after this spear, though no one knows if it is true or not.

It is an artifact weapon, widely known through out the world, the only one of its kind.

When he left his life behind and joined the army, he also left behind Gungnir.

It is the weapon to be used by the master of the family. It signifies the existence of the Gungnir family and how could he took away the weapon that signifies his whole family after he left them behind.

Though by the time of Varsas's father, his father Marrik Gungnir was a pacifist. He refused to learn the spear art and wield Gungnir. It causes a conflict between him and grandfather that largely effects how Varsas was brought up today.

The last weapon that Varsas ever wield in the previous life was also a spear, though he has largely diversified and learned to wield all kind of weapons. Compare that spear to Gungnir, it is a lot more lacking magically.

He suspected that the first generation of the Gungnir was not just a spearman who was good with lightning magic but he is actually a great runecraftsman.

Gungnir was made to use magic. It is adorned with runes and magical carving to ease the use of magic. The runes has also enable it to have its own mystical power apart from its user. His father and grandfather seems to never have discovered the existence of such power however Varsas was a veteran war hero, walking through all kind of battle using myriad of weapons from the magical to the mundane. Under his eyes he discovers the usage of the spear.

Gungnir was a spear that travel everywhere. Its runes are designed for it to travel. It can reach everywhere in the world, using it there is no where that you can't travel. All of the complicated design enable instantaneous travel, the spear was made for it. It is no wonder Gungnir was a world class artifact, the complex work that requires multiple mage working together for months can easily be replicated while holding the spear. Even outside of the traveler effect, its ability to boost the use of magic alone has elevated it to the rank of world class artifact.

Varsas wonders why the spear was made for travel. What kind of personality did the maker have to design something like this? Some questions may never have an answer.

However comparing the last spear he uses to Gungnir, even though it is lacking in the mystic way, he prefers it to any other weapons, including Gungnir.

While Gungnir and other magical weapons are adorned with rune and magic, the weapon he likes is plain and unassuming. Even to the last second the enemies would have never suspected that such a weapon would be their demise.

While other weapons have various ability, that spear would always work no matter what happen.

On the outside it appears to have no ability, however the spear's power grow with the blood of powerful beings it has spilled and Varsas has spilled a lot of blood through out his career. Gungnir may generate lightning, but Varsas can compensate for that using his own ability, however he cannot compensate the ability to always be reliable against any kind of enemies he faces.

A man may learn to use armor to protect against weapon, certain kind of monsters would be resisting magic, a God would be resistance to almost everything, but that spear would always be able to hurt them no matter what happen.

A weapon that can hurt any enemies compensated with his own prodigious skill allow Varsas to fight enemies stronger than him by multitude. It is an existence that can't be denied. No matter if you are a man, a monster or a God, it would always come though and pierced you.

Right now the spear is in a certain place, forgotten due to its unassuming nature, waiting for a worthy wielder to find it.

However Varsas Gungnir has chosen a peaceful life, so no matter how painful it is to let a trustworthy comrade who was with him every part of the way languish in obscurity, he would not immediately set out to find it.

Their path may cross and he may reunite with it again just like all of his other comrade, but that would be relying on chance.

And what is the chance to stumble upon a one of its kind weapon or a peerless hero who walk a different path from the ordinary people?
