Chereads / Immortal Duan Cai / Chapter 40 - Chapter 39

Chapter 40 - Chapter 39

"Looks like tonight is going to be another long one after all." Vail yawned slightly into his hand as he leaned against a tree.

He was standing just outside of the Humming Tome where he had followed Duan Cai and the girl earlier that night. The thought of Duan Cai spending the night in the place was something he had not expected to happen however he was use to waiting when it came to that boy. There were a vast number of things he had no knowledge to understand when it came to him and he had long given up on trying to force himself to understand him. Curiosity was something that was known to kill the cat and he was not going to push himself further than necessary. His job was to simply follow until he found an opening and take that chance to be the cause that finished Duan Cai off for good.

He had been born and raised in the Shadow Sect all his life and only had one purpose. At the moment he was born into his sect he was torn from his birth parents. Members of the Shadow Sect were not allowed to know who their family was and were not allowed to be given names. At birth a child in his sect is sent to a specific building that is hidden within the vast city and raised among groups of other children til they reach a certain age. In an attempt to keep the children from growing attached to even each other the groups are constantly being circulated and changed up so that they aren't allowed to form personal bonds.

Once the child turns twelve years old the sect sends them to a different facility where they undergo self torture in both a physical and mental state in order to dull their feelings and make them able to sustain physical damage in combat. Most of the children who undergo the process of growing up in the shadow sect collapse during the process of self torture and either die or become something of a mere shell of their former self. The ones who fail to be properly formed and survive either have their time lengthened for the process or find themselves tossed onto the streets or other various places in order for the sect to remove them as if they were nothing but trash to begin with. The Shadow Sect only believed in keeping the most qualified and able to complete their jobs.

Members of the Shadow Sect often used code names if they had to do joint missions together in order to keep track of who was taking care of a specific task, however names were never solid kept. They did not believe in allowing themselves to have permanent names to go by due to the fact it could be used as something of a collar, something to bind them to their daily lives that they must not grow attachment towards. It was something they would look down on another for if they had learnt of one using a permanent name. The fact that Vail had started to grow use to being called by such a reoccurring name was starting to bother him. He could sense his own attachment growing towards having name and he knew he had to force that feeling to stay buried as if it was never there to begin with.

Even though he had a duty to kill Duan Cai at the given chance if he got it he would never touch another at Duan Cai's side. He did not believe in harming those who were not tasked to him to personally take care of unless he had no other choice. That was something about himself that he held in high regard; he did not want to shed unnecessary blood. His purple eyes started to light up with a slight glow as his blue hair, which was tied up in a pony tail yet still reached shoulder length while tied up, waved in the gentle breeze. A black bandana was covering the bottom half of his face, his top was a short baggy black tank top that had white lines down it while it still left his waist in sight though his waist was wrapped firmly in blue cloth to hide his stomach from view. A pair of black pants covered his lower half to complete his outfit.

A slight and sudden scream sounded throughout the midnight air. There was a flicker of light in Vail's gaze as he turned his head in the direction of the shout. It was midnight and that was the worst time for women to be outside in the city. Midnight was known as the most active for the criminals throughout the city so people were usually careful not to go out unless they had no choice if they really understood how safety for themselves first worked when living in such a place. For a moment Vail wavered in his decision on whether or not to investigate the situation he heard in the distance. If he left his post he was not sure whether or not Duan Cai could move out without him knowing and if he did he would have to track him down all over again. The more he thought about it the more he wavered in his decision. He could hear the woman screaming for help while he was unsure of who was after the girl.

"Shit.. Things are not going well for me tonight." He let out his frustrations verbally as he found himself darting into the shadows of the local buildings to hide his presence. A sudden wave overtook him as he found himself heading into the direction of the screaming and pleading girl's voice that he could hear from afar as quickly as he could. There was no way he knew what he was heading towards, but for some reason he found he could not contain himself when and innocent girl was pleading so desperately for help within his own ear shot of a distance.
