Bambina
I got back to the shore just in time for dusk. I was already ready for this night to be over with. I thought about going to a different spot but then I'd be running around streaking because my clothes are in my usual spot.
As I pop my head out of the water, I quickly search the beach for any abnormal behavior. So far, I see nothing until my eyes land on my spot. Aiden was sitting at the beach, facing away from the water.
I walk the rest of the way toward the beach line. Without saying anything, I quickly grab my clothes and pull them on. I slipped the little chain into my pocket before I could lose it.
"I didn't think you would come back out of the water." Aiden admitted, turning around to face me.
I look down. "I don't really have a choice."
He scrunches up his eyes in confusion. I understand the reason behind it and I'll explain everything to the best of my knowledge.
I grab his hand and pull him toward the abandoned building that, ironically enough, I abandoned last night for Aiden. Or rather, the human food Aiden brought me.
He followed without restraint, which is a good sign since he isn't repulsed by me. We head inside moments later and I take him into the little room I set up with random things I found at the beach and books I borrowed from the park.
I sit down on the floor and up against the wall. Aiden looks around for a moment before finally deciding to join me. I was nervous. My stomach was quenching in pain at the thought of his rejection.
"So... You're really a mermaid, huh?" Aiden speaks up seconds later.
I nod. "Yeah."
He sighs as he runs his hands through his hair. "I understand why you didn't tell me. But, you told me last night you didn't think mermaids were real. You could've said you thought they might be true.." He rambles on but I have to correct him.
"I actually said, I didn't believe mermaids were real unless someone was cursed or something."
He looks over at me as if I were crazy. As if that explained everything. Which, little does he know, it does.
"What?"
"I said,"
"I heard what you said, Bambi." The nickname is a good sign, right? "Witches parent real. Mermaids parent real. This is some big ass joke someone is playing on me. It has to be."
"Its not a joke, Aiden." I place my hand on his arm. "I wish it were but, its not. I am a mermaid. And witches are real. And one cursed me to be a mermaid. I don't know why but, I do know that I turned when I was ten and when I was sixteen, around dusk, I had feet. I thought the curse somehow broken and I was happy, but more scared then anything. I didn't know what it was like to be a human after so long. It didn't matter anyway. Around dawn, my tail came back. That's how its been ever since. I was cursed to be lonely for the rest of my life. I stay to myself and hide from humans every night. You caught me last night at a time when I was over thinking. I haven't had human food since I was ten and I'm so grateful you brought me some last night. But, you weren't meant to see me. I usually hide from humans because I didn't want my secret to get out and now that it has..."
He grabs my hands which I didn't realize were shaking until now. I look up into his eyes and he gives me a small smile.
"I won't tell anyone." He stands up and holds his hand out. "Come on."
Slowly, I take his hand and he pulls me up. "Where are we going?"
He smirks. "We are going to go shopping. Then we are going to a party."
"A party? Like a birthday party?" I raise my eyebrow in confusion. Did he not just hear what I said?
He chuckles. "No, like a real, teenager party. You missed out on your life and you said it yourself, you're lonely. You don't have to be. Random teenagers always turn up at parties. No one would even ask about you."
"But, what if..."
"I promise, I will not let anyone find out your secret." Aiden holds up his pinky. I look at his pinky as if he were crazy. "Hold out your pinky."
I do as I'm told and he wraps his around mine. It seemed a little weird but also comforting. Like it was a sacred bond or something.
"So, what do you say? Shopping then some fun?" Aiden asks with a handsome smirk on his lips.
I wanted to disagree with him and just go back into the house and read a book. I did not want to be a bother to him at all. But, I trusted Aiden, for some reason. So, I smile up at him and nod.
"Okay, let's do this."
