Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 : My Goodbyes, and Yours?

Edward

Time was running out. The dark cold arena of this little cool home was bout to fade out. My atmosphere of the room gave me the chills of thoughtlessness. I never went to the gathering of the citizens at the council hall. it was utterly no use for that due to the fact that the whole Zarmin city would be up in flames in a hurry.

I made use of my well precious time in packing up my belongings. My horse was almost ready and most of the luggage were hardly-set. I was so quick in pace for my survival, so engrossed in eluding away from this captivity of hell I was in.

I also made time to get as much human blood from the store room. Thus, it wasn't easy as I also compelled the doctor to forget i ever vandalized the blood bank from the store. Now, all that was left was to burn down any evidence that I ought have left behind for my hunters.

I took out everything flammable with evidential information about me and burned them all in the fireplace.

I was about getting my luggage off the door when suddenly, the citizens of Zarmin walked eccentrically towards different directions. I stared as some seems to be opening their wards while others went home with ecstasy on their faces. To me, it was all weird and confusing.

They were this same people's whom were in outburst about their recent pandemonium some minutes ago and now, they are all smiling and opening their brown coated teeth in joy. I looked all around me. It seems the people were less angrier than before. This was not natural at any level.

I went up to a fellow next to my home for some inquiry about this turmoil: "Did Counter Paulini disperse to you folks about his previous actions?"

The man whom I think looked like an alcoholic due to the barrel of wine close to him with a cup filled with brandy spoke in a drawly manner: "My lad, all is well in Zarmin. We folks are to survive. Counter Paulini will make sure of that".

To me, it seems that the so called human next to me was totally a dick in a bag, a total nuisance to humanity. All I wanted was an answer, not to find answers in between bushes but still, who am I? I continued to listen to what the babbling drunkard was saying; "Counter Paulini says we folks should be nice and comfortable in our homes that as long as he is still the Head of the city, no one would tamper with us".

I felt something wrong from the man's speech. I decided to embellish more questions on him: "So what about the enemy beyond the walls? Did he emphasis on that to the public?"

The Alcoholic gave out a loud giggle, spilling out some of his drink on the dirty mud: "Comrade, whom is this enemy you speak of? There is nothing outside the walls. Its just a sham. We haven't heard of any intruders outside the walls. Well, if there are, who cares? Counter Paulini will personally deal with it. No need to worry, my fair masculine".

The Dirty-looking man made a wide smile as he dislodged from his position on the sign post which reads clear above "The Tasty Throat". I looked all around me. The city looked all bright and colourful. What I expected for a day like this was a dreary feeling in the environment. A feeling of fear and death in the air but not in this case, there was not.

It seems that Counter Paulini wasn't honest with his own kin by any chance. He has brainwashed his citizens. Some sort of disarrangement wasn't fitting in some parts. I knew there was only one place to clear my doubt.

With speed, I raced to the main gates of the city. There, what I saw made everything I knew far more complicated. I gazed with confusion on my mind.

The Zarmin soldiers were still at the wall! What was really going on? I thought to myself.

The people mentioned a peaceful activity at the gate and only to discover another way round in the sense that the city gate was swarmed by Zarmin soldiers. Some sort of sercet devised plan must have been put in place and the citizens of Zarmin had no clue.

At that spot, I froze staring at the numerous number of soldiers at the top of the city wall with the city gates closed. Archers, foot soldiers all in armour for mass war.

I was finally broken up by the sound of a horse heavy breathing behind me. My sharp ears picked up a number of running horse moving without topping behind me. I turned back. I saw riders above these animals. They were the council members of Counter Paulini!, riding with all vigour and speed. They didn't even care to look back.

They might have come from the council hall but indeed, it was totally strange for the council members to leave their dicatorial abode on their horses to places I yet to fathom. To make it all worse, The head of Zarmin city wasn't with them.

I watched the council members sped up into the streets like raging bull's on fire. That was completely unnatural. Something strange and deadly was brewing and the city dances with Joy.

Maybe, I thought, the council members would know the issue matter. In an instant, I followed the council members to foster more about their deep dark sercet…

THIRTY MINUTES TO COUNTDOWN

Six hours felt nothing to the commander of the troopers, Samson. The Scavengers leader kept looking at the hourglass laid at a support in front of his opponents, The Zarmin Army whom now looks frightened at their fearless foe.

The clock ticks and the time was running out. Yhe soldiers from both sides all armed with their armaments watching at a distance. Half an hour was between the Salvation and the Desolation of the Zarmin people and all hope will soon be altered. Samson reached out for his horn packaged on his belt.it was time to signal the beats of fury...

I eventually traced the secretive council members to their hideous plan. Still gaining on their pace, I silently followed the middle aged men through the Street of Zarmin. I made sure I wasn't being watched. Finally, I traced them until I got to their final destination - the extreme end of the city wall, the West wing of the city.

It looked really empty and all due to the fact no one seems to exist there. Not even the soldiers were found there. The only souls present was that of I and the five council members.

I watched as they dismounted their horses. It wasnt that creepy until I saw what was hidden at first sight. One of the council members held his hands on the wall, pushing it with great might that the wall fell open. At that moment, the council members went hurriedly into the huge opening.

I got outside my hiding spot. I ran towards the vast opening. I placed my hands on the top of this terrifying hole. It looked dark and quiet in there then suddenly, I saw a flash of light.

It looked like this strange place had an opening at the other end. It was at that moment the whole puzzle was fitted. It was a tunnel and the council members were escaping in sercet!

I moved quickly to the other end of the tunnel where i saw a massive grains field with the sun above its heavens. I looked far away as I watched the council members riding fast on their horses. With some much horror in my eyes, I turned back to the city about the effect of the coming storm.

I raced out of the cave back to the town, screaming honestly out of my weary breath: "Everyone, we need to evacuate the city. Hear me!, the city isn't safe no more. I speak for the survival of us all".

I ranted on and on but it seems the people weren't even listening to me. They all looked deaf to my words of fear.

My message of safety sounded absurd to their ears. With little bit of time I had, I went to some of the main sites of the city to broadcast but still, there was no mountains to shake. I finally knew at the moment that the city was beyond saving.

I ambled towards the streets to my home. Nothing more was in my head but to leave this city. I was so embarrassed. There I was, with my moment of silence until the unexpected happened.

BANG‼

There was a loud bawl of a horn that filled the surroundings of the city. Everyone heard it. Each and every soul came out to inquiry about the abrupt noise. It bawled for a long time then it stopped. I felt something foul in my bones, something I couldn't understand nor explain. All I did was to be scared.

I ran as quickly as my legs could take me. I ran passed houses and gossipers whom seems to be curious about the strange sound from way beyond. At last, I got to my home. I opened to door, forcefully paving my way into my home.

At that moment i was in, the bawling sound came up again for the second time shaking the walls and the people's minds in confusion and dispair.

BANG!!!

Time was no longer at my side.

With all the powers in my body, I hurriedly ransacked my building, tearing up and decomposing all necessary materials which could implicate me from what was coming. I was now all ready packaged, now outside with my horse. I was now about to tie my luggage when the final brawl was heard. Alas, what I feared for was here

BANG!!!!

COUNTDOWN

Instantly, Noises filled up the corners of the city. The noises grew louder and louder. Shankles sounds of metal were heard from the main gate of the city. It wasn't long enough when I heard great pounding on the gates. it went on and on. Pandemionum was filled everywhere.

Once again men, women and children moved to and fro with ambiguity. Even the soldiers were not left behind. I stared at my left hand side, watching numerous citizens running in horror down the street. I heard one saying; "All the soldiers are gone!. They are dead!. No one is alive!. Something is coming through the gates!".

Fear gripped me instantly. I rushed into the house for my sword. Immediately I got out, i heard a loud bang and eventually, a loud Eerie followed. My eyes wrinkled in terror.

The Wall has been breached!

Not less than a second, every living ran with speed towards numerous directions but this time, In a weird kind of way.

They all seemed to be chased by someone or something. I decided to take a look at the scene of the event - Its core. I left my horse with my luggage by the doorside and went towards the opposite direction of the running people.

I trolled through the sake. Everywhere looked deserted and untidy. It was a total disarrangement in the town. Baskets, wards and trinkets were both hanging and left disoriented on the ground covered with dirts. I didn't move so much when I got to a sub-section of the town where the heavy flow of calamity fell in the city.

I saw dead bodies laid to waste in all corners. Children mourning death as well as their fathers groaning for breath. Mothers were seen crying in fear and dismay towards their children's arrival to hell. Shocked, I was when I saw all this. They were all dead and it was all because of Me. I should have surrendered myself to the barbaric numbskulls, I thought.

This was a pitiless bloodshed. I cried under my words. This was Sandroville all over again.

Not long I stood there when I heard a noise of a bloodthirsty animalistic creature behind me. The noise fumes the air with horrific sounds as I turned back. I looked at the hideous man standing between inches before me.

He carried a sword on his right hand. He looked at Me, advancing towards me. Unknown to him that I also had a weapon, I quickly drew out my sword from behind and struck him down on his chest.

For someone to be stabbed right in the chest at a close range should have taken him to his death but I was as well shocked when he gently removed the blade right out his chest. I frozed instantly.

He makes a smick on his cheek, raising his sword to make a quick slash of the blade but I was quite smooth with my reflexes. I gazed at his chest once again and immediately, I ripped out his heart from his chest. His face turned white and his sword fell to the ground. He dropped to the floor lifeless while I watched him bleed to death.

I got scared. I fell the bloody heart on the dusty road. My face at that moment should have spelt the word "Afraid". I never had done that before.

Soonest earlier than I expected, I heard a loud roar from afar. It sounded like war soldiers. I left the dead soldier on the road, running towards my house after my major discovery. Before I left my assassin, I eventually had to check him and I discovered what it seemed to be De ja vu all over again.

He had a symbol on his chest, a symbol of circles with strange inscriptions on it. I stared in appally. To aggravate the situation, it was the exact symbol whom my attacker in Peachester had on him and it was exactly that same symbol on the scarf I took at the council room.

"How does that scarf, my attacker in the woods of Peachester and this same dead soldier rhymes so well with one aim - killing Me?", I thought.

Just a few more streets and I was almost close to home. After roaming quickly in fear, i hid from the sight of every unknown soldier. More upon my confusion, I couldn't understand what was was staring nor running from But I knew one thing was certain.

I discovered that the entire city was filled with these foul creatures!

The whole city was overrun by deadly soldiers, killing mindlessly without remorse about the innocent citizens.

I finally got to my doorstep and as quickly as I could, I prepared my horse. It was then I heard an uproar behind me. I saw most of the strange soldiers coming up right to me.

Instantly, I mounted my horse disregarding the saddle. I rose my horse barebacked quickly to the west wing of the city. There, I got into the cave with my horse and rode into the dark night sky.

I had gone far when I looked behind staring at the anonymous figure with an unidentifiable face due to the smoke rising from the ashes of the city. It seemed dark but to all, I finally ride away safe from hell but the City of Zarmin fell into destruction.

Smoke rose up from the city as the wailing bell rings loudly in the air with cries of the drying.

The devil has come for the hunger of the pains of the wailing innocents and it was all because of Me. I raced into Croment forest but was I the only one guilty of its desolation ?

Or so I thought...
