Chapter 6 - The shadow at the door

6.

Dad waited for me on the front porch. He glared at the rabbit as it pulled away from the driveway. Jacob thought it was better not to meet Dad right away. He was right, as I climbed the stairs to the door he literally had smoke coming out of his ears.

"Do you know what time it is?" he said through gritted teeth. I peeked at my watch and shrugged my shoulders.

"Tell that to that stupid maths teacher. I had detention," he frowned at me.

"It's only the fourth day," I pushed away from him and reached for the knob.

"Yeah, right and I already hate that school," I sighed. Mom was at the door in seconds.

"Hi, Mom. What's for dinner? I'm starving. Since we are in the middle of nowhere I couldn't grab something to eat...like in the movies? You know, hang out with friends, eat burgers, and chat about social media," I said in a sarcastic tone. Mom pulled me against her for a hug and slowly stroke my hair.

"I'm sorry, Re, you can't have a normal life. You have to be careful, not everyone is nice," she pushed me away gently and I glanced in her dark-red eyes. "We want you to be happy," she smiled.

"A guy at school called me a vampire bastard," I heard a loud hiss behind my back.

"Who dared?" shouted Dad. Crimson bleeding into his eyes. I sighed at his overreaction and felt a little better. "I can't believe this! Tell me his name, I'll rip him to pieces," he waved his fist causing me to burst into uncontrollable laughter.

"Just some stupid guy," I marched to the stairs, my stomach growled on my way to my room.

"I'll order pizza, which one do you want? We are going to hunt do I call Aunty Alice over?" called Mom from downstairs.

"I'm not a baby, I don't need a babysitter. Just go, I have tons of homework anyway," I called back.

"What about the pizza?" she asked.

"Anything will do... no garlic please," I answered.

"No boys in the house," Dad warned. I had to roll my eyes at his comment. There were no boys...only one. My Jacob. The moment they left I reached for my phone.
