Chapter 8 - The Enchanted Emerald

After 'intense' thinking, Filia decided a bracelet would be most effective. In the morning she asked her father to take her to a jewelry store. She wanted to go before school started, and not procrastinate. She told her father that she wanted to wear 'something pretty'. She didn't want to reveal why she needed the bracelet. It would be best to keep the jewel a secret for now. She had roughly an hour to chose a bracelet before school started.

She and her father went inside a store called 'The Enchanted Emerald'. The store was probably the most expensive in the entire capital. The store was set between other stores on the city block. It was at least a dozen meters wide. The storefront had large glass windows showcasing the items on display in the store. There were necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, etc. If you thought of it you could find it there.

A skinny man was in the corner marking down the earnings. He looked to be in his 30's. When they went in a bell in the door chimed. He looked up from his papers and his eyes widened as if he'd seen a ghost. He blurted out, "Johnathon, Is that you? It's been a while." Her father gave a small smile. He hadn't seen his friend, Sam, in years. They had both been to busy to do anything other than write letters.

They had been friends for many years. They met when they were little. They had both left the city to go on adventures. They often got into trouble for one reason or another.

"So is this your daughter that I've heard so much about?" Her father nodded in agreement. "Hello, Filia. You probably don't remember me since you were only a baby. I am your uncle Sam. Your father and I have been friends for almost a whole score(20)." She in fact didn't remember him. It was a few years ago. "Sam, sorry to cut this short but, my daughter wants to buy a bracelet. Would you please show her some bracelets?" "Of course. I do have some bracelets that would fit her." He turned to her, "Do you have anything in mind?" She had given some thought to what kind of design and material to use. "I would like a bracelet that can resist both magic and physical damage, but have a high mana conductivity." They both looked at her with confused looks. A little girl had said something expected only of an adult.

"Okay, let's see if I have anything fitting." They followed him to the corner of the room. There were a few armor pieces along with gold and silver jewelry. "This is the area where magic armor and jewelry are. Gold might fit. It does meet the requirements, but can bend with physical attacks. It also resists aging. Silver is also no good. hmm...ah... what about that? I have a new product. It is adamantine spar. It is described as silky brown. The bracelet was magically woven from it. The crystal is almost as hard as diamond, but being woven it resists breaking."

He went into the back room and pulled out the bracelet. It was beautiful. Is shone like the stars in the sky. "Do you like it?" Her father questioned. She nodded happily. "This is a test product that was made. New ones are already being made. How about this: I'll make it half price." The two men walked over to the desk in the corner. Her father handed him a sack of coins for the payment.

She checked to make sure they were distracted. She pulled the magic jewel out of her sleeve and touched the jewel to the bracelet. It glowed for a for only a second, but any that saw it would be in awe. It was a beautiful blue. It mesmerized the mind.

Her father and Sam looked up from the desk and glanced at the corner she was in. She continued looking at the bracelet like nothing happened. The two looked back and chalked it up to their imagination. Sam continued what they were saying, "It's been good seeing you again, Johnathon. It looks like time has taken a toll on both of us." "Speak for yourself! I'm as fit as I was a decade ago. Sam, I heard you had a child a while ago?" "Yeah, We thought he would be a girl so we named him Iris. He's six now. Going to school at Magical General Ed." "Oh, really? My daughter wanted to attend school there as well. She's going there, but I don't know how well she will do. Even though she is gifted." "Johnathon, I'm surprised you let her go. It could be bad for her ego when she does badly." "What? You think Filia will do badly?" His anger seemed to be tangible. "No, no, but she is female after all." "She happens to be one of the most gifted of her generation." "Oh, do you want to have a bet to see whose child will do better?" "Sam, I'm appalled! You would bet on your own child? I'm in." They continued their rambling for another five minutes.

Filia got sick of it, so she pulled her father's sleeve to let him know that she had to get to class. School would start very soon. She would have only a few minutes to spare.

She barely made it in time to training. The other three were already there waiting for the principal. Helia was also waiting for him. This man was rarely on time. The others already fused their magic jewels to form a magic device. A normal person wouldn't notice a magic device unless they were touching it. She could see the devices' mana running through them. Marc had a ring on his index finger, Iris had on glasses, and Amary had a necklace.

An explosion came from one of the windows and a man came flying out. He landed next to the training ground. He sat up and regained his senses. He stood up and walked towards the five of them. It was the principal, yet again covered in smoke and ash. "Sorry I'm late. I got caught up in an experiment again." Helia was "staring daggers" at him. He stared at Iris in confusion, "Did you always have glasses?" A monotone voice responded, "Yes, but they could get damaged in battle so I rarely wear them. I fused the jewel to the glasses to make them stronger." "Ooh, interesting. Even in battle you can see your health"
