Chapter 10 - Fight to the Death?

Iris and Filia were separated from Marc and Amary by a short stone wall. Each had a 10 meter ring. The rules were simple. Don't step out of the ring, and the match ends with one side conceding. The principal was the acting judge, "Everyone ready...FIGHT!" Iris conjured a stone wall and ducked. Filia shot a bolt of lightning at the wall, obviously having little affect. Iris counter-attacked by casting an ice spear above the stage. Filia blocked using a wall of fire. They were evenly matched, for children who had the ability to kill a dozen adults instantly. Filia concocted an idea; she made a stone shell and filled it with light magic, a flash grenade. She threw it over the wall and it detonated. Using her chance, she ran past the wall and doused him in water. "I lose..." said Iris.

Filia proudly walked away from the arena and he walked away dripping in water. Iris used a spell mixture of fire and air to dry himself off. Even after drying himself he still looked decrepit.

Next was Marc and Amary's battle. Amary threw up a water barrier and blocked Marc's fireball. Marc tried again, firing a flaming arrow. At the last moment it curved and went around the barrier. Amary fell down while trying to dodge. Finally taking an offensive she threw a ball of water at him, but she missed. Marc smugly stepped forward...and fell flat on his face. He tripped on the puddle of water in front of him. The laughing embarrassed and enraged him. How dare she insult him?

He stood up and as he did so a thumb-sized stone fell on his head. "Amary wins!" the principal declared. "What? How? She didn't even hit me!" His anger was increasing. "That stone was cast by her," explained the principal. "In the time that you were down you could have died half a dozen times. You are gifted, but your pride betrays you."

Marc walked off the stage embarrassed. He had lost, and to a girl no less. He was supposed to be better than she was.

'How would I do that, and what is up with the emoticons?'

-------------------------------------------------------

>The emotes are cute AF! For a body I need, you know, matter. It also needs to be either organic or technological.

The others were wondering why she was staring off into the horizon. She was looking for a volcano...

The day was over and the four of them headed home.

Several hours later Filia was sitting at the dinner table. "So, what have you been learning at school?" Her father struck up a conversation, but her family didn't know of the training. The four had signed an NDA. 'Wait, we're children! We can't enter a legal agreement!' "I learned about the Demon War and the heroes." A five-year old talking about war with a smile is uh...disconcerting. Her mother had an idea. "I think it's time for you to learn defensive magic!" They knew about her magic, but not its extent. Her family unanimously agreed. This wouldn't be fun. Tomorrow was a weekend, and the day her "training" would begin.

Her father wanted her to know how to wield a blade. He gave her a wooden dagger. "OK, charge at me without using magic." She complied and ran at him, her hands nervously clutching the dagger. Her father sighed and smacked her dagger with the butt of his blade. "Use one hand with a dagger and stab forward the blade." The training went on for hours.

Her father was worried for her daughter's sanity because she was scowling at a bracelet, "uhm, Filia... are you okay?" She remembered his existence, "yes, everything's fine. I just increased my mana."

"What? One's mana can't be increased (usually)."

"Not increased, but gained access to more mana."

"I... uh... never mind." Her father just sighed. "Let's end the training for today. You did a good job."
