Chapter 38 - R'hllor Part 1

287 AC, Gates of Volantis…

Black Wall crumbled against the might of the thunder as the cracks spread upon it. At first, a small piece of the wall fell to the ground but with the growing cracks, the stone fell piece by piece like a rain.

The men on the Long Bridge were gaping like a fish while the men on the wall were screaming with terror and trying to escape. Though each of the men on the wall did know their fate as the wall was too high to climb down.

When the cracks reached the big door of the Black Wall, the door stood strong. However, it fell slowly when there was no stone left to support it. The ruin of the Black Wall was like a small hill. Some pieces were still crumbling down to the ground.

One of the men lining the Long Bridge came to his senses with the nickering of a horse. He looked upon the miracle with wide eyes but when he realized that he was standing in a bridge and sieging the last bastion of the Old Blood, he roared with all his might and raised his sword to the sky.

With the man's roar, all the soldiers came to their senses and roared with him. They raised their swords high in the air with eyes washed with the zeal of blood.

Gerold looked at the men behind him and spoke the word they were waiting for, "Charge!!"

Soldiers rushed forward with war cries as Gerold's horse stood still amongst the rushing men. As soon as they reached the small hill created by the pieces of the Black Wall, they started climbing it.

Several men of faith reached to the top of the hill but what greeted them was a rain of bolts. Old Blood's personal slave soldiers were showering the hill with crossbows. However, their numbers were small and they needed time to load their crossbows. Men of faith were climbing to the top of the hill despite the rain of bolts.

It only took one man to run down the hill and stab one of the slave soldiers with his sword as all of them tried to run away from that man. Thanks to this, it did not take long for the other soldiers to run down the hill and begin the slaughter.

With this came the end of the Old Blood. They were dragged out from their ancient palaces to the centre of their little heaven. They were forced onto the ground and those who resisted were beaten to the death.

It did not take long for the soldiers to clean out a small passage to the Long Bridge.

Gerold rode through the road and went into the Black Wall. When he reached the centre of the palaces, violet and blue eyes welcomed him with hatred running throughout them.

"Nādrēsy, zaldrīzoti kessa paghagon perzys bē ao!" One of the elderly Old Bloods shouted with a bloody mouth. However, blood sprayed to the ground as the man beside him, hit his head with the hilt of his sword.

Gerold looked at the man. He looked like the eldest among these pure-blooded Valyrians. However, he was also the fiercest amongst them.

"Dragon shall breathe fire upon me," you say but your gods are dead and they won't be able to help you. Soon, the demon you help will also go back to where she came from." Gerold turned his head to the commander standing beside him and ordered with cruel eyes, "Cut their heads but leave this one last, I want him to watch as his fellow heathens die."

Gerold turned his horse around and went out of the Black Wall with Trios beside him. As soon as he left the walls he turned left with a platoon of men behind him and went towards the red demon's temple.

The temple was the biggest structure Gerold has ever seen. It was even bigger than his own temple in Lys. the walls were hues of red, yellow, gold and orange. They were intersected like the branches of vines.

An army of Unsullied was waiting in front of the temple. However, they were not standing like they were waiting for an enemy, rather they were standing guard like they were guarding something.

Gerold motioned for his men to wait and went forward, the Unsullied opened way for him and Trios. The doors of the enormity opened with a loud noise and a scene of pure red greeted him.

Gerold went in with caution while Trios walked in like he owned the place. They were met with four men prostrating before a big throne made of red-painted wood. However, the most strange thing was the girl sitting on the throne.

The girl was a little overweight and her fiery hair was flowing down the throne like water. Her eyes were similar to her hair but there were specks of black dots in it. There was a basket beside her and she was picking little balls from it and eating them. The balls were white-grey coloured and the colours in it were swirling with a great force.

While she was eating the balls, she was playing with a little black stone on her other hand. Gerold was dumbstruck when he saw this as she did not look like a real god but a mere child.

On the other hand, Trios bellowed a laugh when she saw the girl and said, "Bitch, did you think you could escape from the mighty Trios? I still remember you praying to me for power. I knew you were of the evil lot but even I, the Great and Mighty Trios, did not expect you to use them for ascending. But don't you worry, you will be kneeling before me by the end of the day!!"

Gerold raised an eyebrow to his words while the little girl harrumphed and threw one more ball into her small mouth. She chewed it slowly while squinting her eyes to Trios.

The priests before the little girl raised upon hearing these blasphemous words and shouted to the outsiders, "Heathens, this is not a place for blasphemy. Take your demon god and begone from this holy place."

Trios pointed himself and shouted, "You ungrateful bastards, you call me heathen? I was the one who gave her powers to this bitch so you should show some respect and call me High God!!"

The little girl moved her hand to the basket but there was nothing to grab. She turned her head and looked at the basket but it was empty. She mumbled something to herself and turned her head back to the front and looked at her priests and yelled, "Vogaro! Didn't I tell you, this basket shall never be empty! I want more souls!!!"

The souls she was talking about were actually the balls she was eating. These souls were made from those that were sacrificed to her by burning. And throughout eating them, she was gathering more powers.

The man named Vogaro, High Priest of R'hllor, turned around to his god and threw himself to the ground to beg forgiveness, "Mighty One, forgive this fool. It was all because of these heathens. I will go to bring new souls, immediately."

"Take your little humans with you and don't come back until I call you, meanwhile I will deal with these insignificant beings." said the little girl and licked the black stone on her hand as she didn't have any balls to eat and a face of full ecstasy came out of her.

Trios's eyes widened when he saw this as he did know what that stone was. The stone was something that was used by the gods to strengthen their powers but it was banned later by all the gods because of the problems it has created.

It was first used by the Bloodstone Emperor, last ruler of the mythic Great Empire of the Dawn. He already had powers beyond a normal human but he wanted more so he cast down the true gods of Yi Ti to worship a black stone that fell from the sky. His practice of necromancy was the last straw that broke the camel's back.

All the gods on Planetos banded against Bloodstone Emperor and cast his empire down and exiled him to the beyond of the Gray Waste. Though he later returned with an army of strange creatures corrupted by his powers. Nevertheless, he was defeated but gods couldn't kill him so they forced him to give an oath to never return until the end of the time. However, the foul creatures of his were not bonded by his oath so they raided Yi Ti, frequently. Thus, Gods of Yi Ti built five forts to protect their believers from the corruption of foul one and to mock him they created the forts from black coloured stones.

This was the reason why the use of black stone was banned and all the gods were to banish the one that used it. And here, Trios was seeing another black stone in the hands of the newest god of Planetos.

"You foul bitch, didn't others tell you if you found a black stone to give it to the Keepers!!" shouted Trios.

"Hmph, why should I give this delicious thing to those old weasels? The powers it gives me has created wonders, can't you see it? Nearly all of the Western Essos worship me and look at yourself… A small, forgotten god, playing the role of slave to some human, disgusting." R'hllor eyed Gerold with irritation, "Also don't blame me, it was all because of those humans. They were the ones who enriched their souls with this fine piece…"
